Golf ball fitting - which clubs to use?

Recommended Posts

I am attending a Bridgestone golf ball fitting day soon and in prep for it I have just viewed the fitting online. It seems they takes readings with the Driver. I hardly use a Driver and when I do it's hit and miss, so would it not be better them fitting me with my 7 iron in hand.

When choosing a golf ball I go for feel when putting, short pitching, long range and then woods off the tee (in that order).

My questions are:

1) Why are fittings done with a Driver in hand?

2) Can I request them to fit me with a 7 iron or would that be no use in getting the desired readings?

If this is the same fitting I have done with Bridgestone they have you hit a few of your current gamed balls, they check your numbers, if your numbers seem decent they have you hit a ball of they're that's comparable. Then they see if there ball went farther, spun less, etc. I think the idea is that whatever you hit there's will out perform. For me it didn't but you still get a free sleeve or two to try. I think they have you hit driver because most people seem to care the most about how far they hit driver. I think the way they are trying to fit you there is for accuracy and distance off the tee so if you don't want to hit driver I'd say hit whatever you tee off with... Sorry for the long post! Good luck!

I always thought it made more sense to start with the putter. Knock out all of the balls you can't stand. Then hit chips, pitches and bunker shots, and half-wedges (or "distance wedges" if you follow the Pelz books) and do the same. Then you move to irons, further whittling the list down, and to the hybrids and/or fairway woods doing the same.

...then you fit the driver to match the ball that is left.

I completely agree, but the Bridgestone fitting I did was just a quick five minutes or so. Not exactly thorough.

Oh, I understand. I haven't done it myself, but I've seen it done. It just seems...backwards to me, that's all.

Thanks for your replies.
I agree, I would do it in reverse order (Putting through to Driver). I may mention to them that I'm more interest in mid-irons than woods. If they ask me which more I game well... it's take your pick as I am playing different makes/models at the moment to try and find a ball I prefer. The strange thing is of all the balls I have gamed the B330 and E5 (both Bridgestone) I find to be my preference. I think I will say I game the Titleist Pro 1v (the industry standard premium ball) to get a comparison against that - what you reckon?

That is a good idea. At the time I did mine I played nxt tours. They actually told me the nxt tours had better numbers then their ball but fav me some e7's to try. I ended up like the e7's on the course so I switched to them!

Well, I had the fitting tonight. The guy asked me which ball I game and i replied "take your pick". He went straight for a Pro 1v (but for another guy he chose the Titleist NXT) as I'm a big guy and reckon he thought I could compress it. I hit the driver five times with the Pro 1v and based on that he suggested the E6. I don't really use a driver and due to this my dispersion isnt great hence the E6 was suggested. I hit the E6 five times and numbers couldn't say if the E6 is better or not, again due to me being sh*te with the driver. The E6 is suppose to reduce the slice and hook.
I am very good with irons (if I say so myself) so maybe I don't need the E6. The ball above that was recommended to me is the B330. It was interesting to see that my driver swing speed is 110/111mph.
In conclusion, it is worth having a ball fitting for the experience, however I do not feel a ball that reduces hooks and slices, when I openly admit I cannot hit a driver well yet, will dictate my preference over a ball that feel great on the short game.

UPDATE: Just been onto the Bridgestone website and typed my fitting numbers in. Excluding the the Side Spin the website suggested the B330, but when I put in the Side Spin it then suggested B330-RX. I guess it suggests the B330-RX as the ball will stick to my clubface that split second longer and thus causing less spin. A little confused why the guy suggested the E6 but their own website suggests the B330 range.
Any thoughts???
