Custom Vokey Wedges

I just received another custom Titleist Vokey SM5 and the grip felt too big again. I have sent 2 wedges to Wedgeworks and ordered two custom SM5s this year and they have all come back with grips feeling too big. They have all had KBS Tour shafts with Golf Pride MCC Decade standard grips ordered on them. I finally decided to cut off the grips and all 4 clubs had 3 wraps of tape under the grips. I re-gripped them all with 1 layer of tape and new grips and they feel perfect. I paid for the upgraded grips, so i am kinda upset with Titleist. Is this normal? Has anyone else has this problem?

Thanks,

Nolan

My past two iron sets from Titleist have come with two wraps of tape when ordering a custom grip option like the GP MCC Decade. It is very annoying. I have had to regrip them with one layer of tape as well. I discounted the first occurrence, but the second time makes me think they have all their most popular set configurations pre-made with their standard grip option and then they just remove that grip, put on another wrap of tape, and then the custom grip you ordered. From now on I will order them without the grip and just do it myself.

I just received a custom ordered 714 cb 2iron with a NDMC grip and it definitely felt slightly thicker than the NDMCs I put on my MP59s myself. Honestly, its barely noticeable but it does seem like they used a few more wraps.

Last I knew, stock Vokey wedges come with .580 grips on .600 shafts, which makes the final grip diameter larger than a .600 grip on a .600 shaft (between 1 and 2 wraps). I believe the NDMC only come in .600 size, so to make a NDMC the same size as the stock setup you need to add 1-2 extra wraps of tape. So yes, it is normal, they are just trying to match your custom grip choice to the final outside grip diameter of the stock setup.

My recommendation is to always specify the number of tape wraps you want with custom orders, otherwise many manufacturers will try to match the stock finished size. The last set of Vokeys I ordered I specced to .600 tour velvet with 4 wraps, and they came as specified. The only other tip I would give you is to not order grips from titleist that have alignment marks, I've never seen a grip come aligned correctly from them (although my sample size isn't huge).

Huh...just received a couple custom SM5s from Titleist. Tried to order mid-size white NDMC which they did not have so I ordered +3 wraps which I believe is the same. Wonder if they did just 1? :taunt:

.600 grip on a .600 shaft with +3 wraps is going to be ~3/64" over normal which is 1/64" under mid-sized (+1/16" over normal). That is the same size I play. They wouldn't use less than that, .600 grip on a .600 shaft is _smaller_ than a .580 grip on a .600 shaft, as counterintuitive as that may sound.

I imagine there will be some debate on this, since the # of wraps needed varies heavily on the thickness of the build up tape you use, but my experience with titleist is that they use build up tape which is ~1/64" per wrap.

Titleist has been .580 grips on .600 shafts with 1 layer of double-sided tape underneath for at least 15 years. The fact that some grips are .600 only, like the NDMC, is probably due to some driver shaft butts getting up into the .625 and .630 range.

This made me check, the DCI-B irons I have from the early 90's were also .580 grips on .600 shafts. So at least 20 years I think. Nike VR Pro MB irons I have now are also .580 grips on .600 shafts.

One more tip - the double sided tape layer is assumed. e.g. if you order a club with '0 wraps' you'll get just the double sided tape. if you order a club with '+3 wraps' you'll get 3 layers of build up tape and 1 layer of double sided tape. So it you want just the grip with only double sided tape, specify '0 wraps' or otherwise make it clear you only want the double sided tape and nothing else. Sounds a bit strange I know, but the double sided tape is a lot thinner than buildup tape and is included in the grip specs, e.g. a 0.600 grip assumes there will be a layer of double sided tape between it and a 0.600 shaft to create a 0.900 finished outside diameter.

I was going to say the same thing, but with some DCI 981 ... I played slightly oversized grips up until this year because the DCI were the first real clubs I had and I got use to the slightly later feel.

They had extra wraps because the Z-Cord only comes in .600 and the "standard" men's grip is .580 on .600 with 1 wrap.

KBS Tour (.355 or .370) are all .600 O.D and GP New Decade Multicompound are all Mens .600 ID Core size which would give the Industry Standard .900 OD measured 2" down from the grip cap.

But whats the Vokey Standard? For some OEM, standard size starts at .920 ( most men have large hands). You or your clubfitter would of had to indicate "Vokey standard" or +1/64, +1/32 etc from Vokey Standard.
