S59 vs S55's

Recommended Posts

I've never put a Ping iron in play, but I'm considering giving some a try. I see that s59's are cult classics but the appearance of the s55's are beautiful. That said, I don't care about looks as much as playability. And that's where the question comes in. Those of you that are Ping-o-philes, what's your honest opine on the two vs each other? Also what shafts of theirs are closest to S400 TI's? Flexural stiffness wise as well as feel wise?

[/quote]they have no shaft that can directly compare to the s400. You could the zz65 with cushion inserts to get the weight up.

I reshafted a set of Ping S59's this offseason and have never hit a set of irons better.

I would rate them a 7/10 as far as forgiveness goes, but everything else (ball flight, looks, feel, trajectory, distance) is top tier.

I bet the S55's are sweet too though.

$199 for the club heads off the bay and I purchased the ferrules and grips for under a hundred bucks total. Had the shafts from another set from and put them in myself.

Bargain!

Irons are all about shaft and turf interaction. S59s look intimidating but they are actually very, very playable.
Most important thing to sort out first is the shaft. I have Z-Z65 Cushin in my S59s and they are nothing like any variety of DGS IMHO.
I certainly cannot go from Z-Z65 to DGS400 but you may adapt well from S400 to Z-Z65 (true make sure you get the ones with Cushins with purple Ping shaft bands) or you may not.

I feel the S55's are much much more forgiving than the S59's, I have owned/own both. With that said, the S55's are some of the nicest irons I have had in years......and I have owned a few. :)

S59, 58, 57 have non conforming grooves. Buy S56 or S55.
As for head design and function, all five of the Ping S series models play the same, a compact iron head suitable for all skill level players.

Picked up a set of S59's a month ago for less than $100 with ZZ65 shafts. Never played this shaft before. I dig 'em.

JUST bought a set of S56's on the bay for $150, looking forward to hitting these too...absolutely love the S59's. May need to put the ZZ65 shafts in the 56's if I get along with the head.

S-55 is a better iron IMO, you can find some and put whatever shafts you want. I re-shaft mine with KBS as that is what I prefer.

S55 is the best iron ping has made.

This sums it up. S55 are the GOAT for ping irons. Bubba still plays them. Same with Mathew Fitzpatrick. Super forgiving but still look like a players iron. I kick myself allot for ever letting my set go.

Another vote for the s-55. I was going to replace them next year, but now I'm certain that I'll finally just reshaft them. I got a solid deal on these brand new with the stock Ping CFS shaft. It's not a terrible shaft though, it's pretty good for a stock option. So if you see a set with them in it for a price you'd like, I'd grab them.

MOI on the S59 is 2182.

MOI on the S55 is 2359.

The difference between them is not what I'd call profound.

Hate the loft progression on the 55's. Brutal

> S59 were very good, liked S58's more but they are not close to 55's in forgiveness and feel, 55's are one of the best irons designed by Ping, very difficult to replace. Hope the bring the S line with an update of these classic set.

The MOI measurements of each set are not that far apart. The S59 are 2182, S55 are 2360.
