Ball markers.....does the size a fellow player uses bother you?

Redhill

Recommended Posts

I've seen some comments on another thread about how Tom Weiskopf allegedly chewed out a amateur in a pro-am for using a quarter instead of apparently the more common penny.

I've played with guys that have used poker chips from Vegas, 50 cent size neon green plastic ones, and shiny dimes....none of them seem to bother me as I am more involved with trying to figure out the line and speed of my putt.

I can see some advantages from the bigger markers as I have had many fellow players step in my line about 1-2 feet from the hole simply because they either didn't know to not step in the line or did not see the marker. Most likely the latter. Lately I've kind of summed up the guys that I'm playing with that day as to how aware they are of other's putting lines on the green. If they seem to be knowledgeable about those courtesies I will use a dime....in not I will use a 50cent piece to help them see where I am at.

What size marker do you use? Does it bother you when someone in your group uses a large marker?

A quarter in I am outside of 10 or so feet from the hole. A dime inside that.

I have no issue with the size or color of the markers used, provided they aren't in my putting path. If they are, I don't care for the poker chip sized ones. No telling what the ball would do if it struck something that size. That said, I use a metal marker a little bigger than the poker chips, but it has a removable small marker on it that I use if I'm close to the hole, or on someone's line.

As others have mentioned above, I don't mind what other people use. The only time it would bother me, is if the large poker chip style markers were in, or near the line of my putt. Otherwise, I'm busy focusing on trying to read the putt on our Poa greens... :dntknw:

It does not bother me in the least what some one uses. I have switched to the poker chips myself. But I have noticed that they do bother some guys. If I am playing with someone I have not played with before I will ask if it bothers them if it does I will have the courtesy to use a dime. I play golf some with the Golf Director of the group that owns my home course he jokenly calls them "manhole covers" but he himself uses one

Just to be clear, the incident with Weiskopf was not in a pro-am, it was during the US Sr. Open. The amateur was the defending US Sr. Amateur champion, who by tradition, was playing with the defending Open champ. Weiskopf was tremendous player, but could be a real jerk.

But, back to the topic, ball markers really don't bother or distract me.

It doesn't bother me one bit what other players use as ball markers. During a casual round I'll use a quarter or whatever coin I happen to have in my pocket. However - during tournament rounds I use a 9/11 Homeland Security coin. It helps me remember that golf is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and the fact that it's about an 1/8" thick helps a little bit in any "gamesmanship" aspect.

Nothing bothers me. I use a poker chip when I'm not near anyone's line, but when I'm anywhere near a playing partner's line, I throw down a coin.

I use the flat plastic markers - always white - highly visible and flat enough to putt over, usually given away for free in the pro shop...

I am always wary of anyone using a Poker Chip or other crazy large mark - they are looking to be asked to move the marker and then grap a couple of inches in the process. But like folks who mark to the side or push their ball forward when marking, it generally indicates they are shaky putters and then are never given short putts in a match.

Pennies, dimes and quarters all OK...

I use a giant 1923 silver dollar with Lady Liberty on one side and a bald eagle on the other. Shiny. My goal is to cause maximum disruption of my opponents. This thing will deflect any ball nearby into the nearest hazard.

Nah - I'm always happy to move it if anywhere near someone's line. I can't possibly part with this marker. My then girlfriend gave it to me while we were dating. We've been married almost 6 years now. Also shot my lowest round ever (84) with it. The Scotty will go before this thing! Good juju.

Even if a mark is near your line, just ask them to move it or place something smaller. Simple fix, should be a non issue.

Im not in the greatest mood today so this is the dead honest truth: I use my golfwrx tour issue poker chip and honestly I know it is rather large and I like when people in tournaments complain about it. It can easily be moved 2,3,4,5 putter heads if you think it is in your way. If you're complaining about the size of my mark then you're not thinking about your shot at hand. One less person with their mind on golf. If someone ever complains to me about it I will smile at them and say: "that really bothers you huh"? It usually gets them to realize that I now know that it is in their head and I know it. Once I know that they know that I know, it's a done deal. Thanks for coming out

Nobody uses the complimentary marker that comes with your glove? Lol

I grabbed a half a dozen hand fulls of the free butterfly markers they give you at kapalua last time I played there
I usually just use those.

Have a bunch of chips in my bag, but I won't use them unless I'm just playing with my buddies.

Giant ball markers are always going to garner a bit of ribbing from other players, but I don't see the point in getting bent out of shape over them. As long as the dude is willing to move it, no problem.
