Calling all R7 TP iron users (or former users)

I've had these since they first came out so the Ho in me is itching for some new toys. I've tried some

different irons from time to time (not every year) and while there is some nice stuff not sure anything can beat them out. They seem to still cover all bases - good look at address with ample forgiveness and plenty long. What have you moved on to?

I had a set of R7 TPs when they came out - great sticks (also had the Japan R7 TPs)! Anyway, I've owned a lot of iron sets since then but that's because I get bored with my equipment. None of my sets (Mizunos, Titleist, Ping, Adams, Miuras, etc...) played any better.

Not surprised to hear this. Every other club in my bag has been turned over mutiple times but the R7 TPs don't seem to be going anywhere any time soon.

I'm in the same situation as you. Had the r7tp's since they were new. I've tried a bunch of new irons this year looking to replace them. This includes ap2, apex, i25, pro combo, covert 2.0 forged etc. From a performance standpoint I haven't seen anything that I would say is significantly better. One thing I haven't hit though is the new tour preferred line. For me the r7tp's are a great combo of forgiveness and looks. They can do anything you ask them to. I find the long irons to be perfect and the finish is holding up extremely well. I am also itching for something new, but if I do decide to spend the money I know it is not really going to get me anything in performance. But that doesn't mean it still wouldn't be fun to get some new gear in the bag.

I recently grabbed another set of R7TPs.

I used to have a set with C tapers that I remember being so easy to hit. So much so, I let me ego get the best of me and got some heads I shouldn't have. After many misses, I finally found some heads that worked. But alas, they arent the most forgiving. With life, kids, and a slew of other reasons, I found myself looking for another set of 7s to pair up with some extra Super Peening Blues I had laying around.

Only a few rounds but they are an answered prayer for a rusty swing..

Same position as you. Have had them since release. I've hit all the latest and greatest and some are equal, but none better. Hitting the Bridgestone j40's next week and I am hoping they are as good as advertised.

Moved to the RocketBladez tour. Still have the set of R7 tp's that were in the bag for 2 years, during my best stretch of golf. If you love hitting long irons, there are few better

My move was to the TP iron. Both heads are excellent and easy to hit, but my move to Burner 2.0 with the same shafts (KBS Tour) that were in my TP's.

My guess that the R7 TP's with KBS Tours would be a treat. My old set had Satin 6.0 PX.

R7 TP's are still a great head IMHO, but it's 2.0's for me and I am not seeing anything that even makes me think about changing them.

I have a set of David Tom's back up R7 TP's. They are sort of a blend from the retail R7TP to the "PGA" R7 TP. There are subtle differences, but I have had them for going on 6 years now. I moved to these from the '05 RAC TP's. I finally made the switch, only by accident to a set of Cleveland 588 blades. I wouldn't suggest blades to everyone, but I did manage to switch from the R7 TP's, although I still haven't sold my D.Tom's. Just can't come to do it.

I would however suggest you try the Adams A12 irons or the Cleveland 588 CB's. I like the new forged clubs with the new grooves. Soft feel and less spin. My iron accuracy has increased, I lost a little distance but I am much closer to the pin these days. I did try to put the same shafts (Nippon Modus 130) in my old R7TP's as I have in my 588MB's and I went to the course one day. The R7 TP's had a noticeably higher ball flight with a more pronounced draw. They did spin more and had a tendency to spin off the green or fly up into the wind and fall short. The 588MB's were lower and flatter and stayed on target better, but they released a few feet. On hard greens the blade/nippon 130 combo might not generate enough spin for me but for now I am sticking to them.

I am ordering a set of Tour Preferred MC/MB combo's. Or I may just go MC or MB all the way. I tend to hit the ball a little thin and the slot on the MC's is supposed to help us "pickers" to elevate the ball and generate enough spin to stop and drop. But I do like the MB's I'm using now and have no issues hitting even a 4i MB consistently, so I'm deciding. Meanwhile the R7TP's are in the closet, along with a set of '05 RAC TP's.

I am playing and will play my r7 tps until the heads crumble to rust, but if I was tempted and had a fatter wallet I personally was looking at the new TP MCs; hit them at a demo day and really loved them. But I would also grreatly consider a new(ish) set of r7tps if any are in good shape by then. I had my 9i stolen a while back and had to replace it with a normal r7 iron which kinda sucks, but hopefully a lefty 9i will pop up somewhere some day!

No replacements yet. I have demoed i25's and played a round with the 714 AP2's. Probably will replace them next year with a forged set, but it will take something special to kick them out of the bag.

I had R7 TPs until the R9 TPs came out (changed only because of looks) but the R9 TPs were awesome. That said, the MCs are the updated version, I like the first version of the MCs better than the new ones. In my opinion the original MCs and the R9TPs are the best irons TM has made and you can find great deals on both.

Yikes, couldn't disagree more. R9 TP's to me were hollow feeling. Yardages were inconsistent also, lots of flyer type shots from short grass on the fairway and some that just fell out of the air and ended up short. R7 TP's are crisp and were very consistet yardage wise for me. MC's to me were a little mushy and spun too much. I guess going from R7 TP castings to original MC forgings didn't feel the best to me. I only used those MC's for a few rounds and moved back to R7 TP's.

I think the best TM iron every is the 2005 RAC TP Forged, followed by 300 Forged followed by R7 TP. The new stuff, MC's and MB's have a shot at the title. The Tour Preferred line, especially the sole slots in the mid-long irons pique my interest a feel great indoors so far. I have a set of MC's coming in the mail to try. Blades are blades, everyone makes the same thing.

Old thread, but figured someone still has the R7 TP's. I've had mine for 6 years with S300 shafts and hit them fine, but I feel like there's more distance to be had - new technology is making me want to scratch my itch. Anyone play Mizuno MP 18 SC's? From both spec sheets, they look similar in offset and lofts. Is it worth it to drop a bunch of money on newer irons or stick with 13 yr old ones?
