Virginia Beach

Heading to Virginia Beach for a week. Any recommendations for a couple of good tracks?

In VA Beach....Heron Ridge ($60) VB National ($65) Cypress Point ($60) Venture out 30-45mins Cahoon (Chesapeake $60) Also if you wanted to head south into NC you have a ton of options

If you head a little north up the coast you'll get to cape Charles where they have bay creek which has a nickalus and Palmer course

Of the ones recommended thus far I would start with VB National. There is also a Palmer course called The Signature at West Neck that is pretty good.

I played Heron Ridge last week and would prioritize that one last from those mentioned. Its a nice layout but currently in pretty rough shape. The greens appear to have either been dramatically over watered or there is some sort of moratorium on fixing pitch marks. The greens were pretty bad.

Lots of good courses that you can get on in Virginia Beach. Most of the ones I would recommend have already been mentioned, with Virginia Beach National at the top of the list. It is a Pete Dye design and was a former TPC course and hosted a Nationwide Tour stop for years.

The Signature at West Neck is a Palmer course, but the bunkers are lacking good sand right now. Heron Ridge is a good layout. Redwing is right near the resort area of the beach and is a fun muni with no houses on the course. There are at least 10 other courses in the general area. It all depends on what is convenient for you in price and/distance.

VB national is a great course, Red Wing is also nice and close to the beach. Cahoon is ok but most of the holes play pretty much the same. If you want to make a drive head up to Williamsburg and there a quite a few nice ones up that way. There are also a few nice ones in Suffolk.

I like Hell's Point more than VB National.
VB National is notoriously slow and it gets super windy as it has little cover.

The two courses on Cape Charles are the best two you can get on without going to a private club.

I've played Heron Ridge, like VB National Layout better (VB fits my game more than any other course, bomb it and let things happen).

IMO, Signature is better than Heron Ridge and equal but different to VB National. Signature does cost a few bucks more though.

It's a really nice track the times I played it when I was stationed there. In the summer they had a really nice twilight deal. I think it was $30 a/cart after 1500

A lot of people don't seem to like Virginia Beach National for some reason, but I love that course. As I said earlier, it's my favorite in the area. I will admit that it is windy because there are no houses and a lot of wide open spaces. But I love the layout. And yes, it can be crowded and make for slow rounds at "prime time" (weekend mornings, and Friday afternoons). There are also times where it is wide open and you can get around in just over 3hrs. If you're here on vacation, play on a weekday morning, or weekday afternoon after 2pm.

Signature is nice, but the bunkers are always poorly maintained with little actual sand in them. It's a great layout though, and poses a challenge from just about any tees. There are houses on the course, but most of them are far out of harm's way if that sort of thing makes you nervous. I like the track, but I'm just annoyed at the fact that the bunkers are almost all hardpacked, wet sand/mud making it really difficult to hit consistent shots. The bunkers at much less costly tracks in this area are in much better shape. Seems odd that such a nice course is so bad on the bunkers. I've probably played that course 10x in the last year though, so I can't say I avoid the course... I just try to avoid the bunkers, lol.

Some people love that course, I don't like it at all. Maybe part of my problem with it is that it is so far away from most other areas of VB and it just isn't worth the drive out there (for me). Another problem is the course seems to have poor drainage and always seems saturated with a ton of mosquitos. That said, there are some nice holes out there. I'm just not a huge fan of the course at all. I've probably played it 5x in the last 5 years, if that.
