Anyone play the Wilson Staff 50 ball?

As usual I was killing time until my wife gets ready, I'm heading to Golf Galaxy for me and the KoP mall for her. On the Golf Galaxy website they're touting ball fitting. Anyway, I clicked on the "Game Improvement" choice, and the Wilson 50 gets the best reviews of any ball. I saw 2 pretty good reviews here as well. For $15.99 I'll probably pick up some, but if anyone has any feedback, I'd appreciate it. Especially how the Wilson ball compares to the Top-Flite D2 Feel and even the Cally HX Tour balls.

Pleayed the D2 and 50 during a round of 36 and was impressed how soft the Fifty/50 was.

I like this ball and it is way under priced for it's playability no matter if it is a 2-peice ball.

Try the PX3s or even the TX4s (if you can find them) I like the DX2 which I think is similar to the 50...Dig the PX3s & LOVE the TX4s....the HX tour was harder than the 3 & 4 wilsons...about the same as the DX2....in distance & feel...the other 2 were about as long as the HX Tour & the Prov1x I was playing, but I really preferred the feel in close & putting of the Wilson balls...HTH

I've had the 50's in my bag since March. The ONLY ball I like as much as this one is the Srixon AD333. It holds the greens and flies forever!

I got a free two pack from Wilson and I loved this ball. Very buttery soft off the irons. It was very soft off the putter face as well. Some complaints have been the loss of distance with the ball, but I never noticed it. I actually hit one with my 3 wood farther than I have ever hit a ball. I would definately play this ball again.

Check out www.gppgolf.com. They sometimes have specials on these. I know they recently had two packs for 99 cents.

The ball has some very good spin believe it or not. I hit the 50 as long as any ball that I have tried. I don't have a very high swingspeed somewhere around 95-96 last time it was checked. For the money this ball has been a very big surprise to me. Used it for my last two rounds and shot in the 70's both times with it. Made good money on both rounds so not bad for a cheap ball. Mike

Used my last $15 on my Golf Galaxy gift card and bought a dozen, after reading the recommendations here. I'm playing a 9-hole par-3 course tommorrow, and I'll use this ball exclusively. The yardages are all 150-160 with a 215 and a 185 thrown in. Basically, I'll be hitting 6 & 7-irons, with a 5W thrown in. Should be a pretty good test of how well these balls stop, 'cause the greens are tiny and FAST!

I picked up a box at Target today for $15 based on some of the buzz here and other sites. I'm not playing today, but I did chip and putt with them at the range.

Wow - I really like the feel of these balls coming off the GSS insert of my Studio Style Newport. I had to adjust a little as these fly off the face compared to the Bridgestone E6 balls I normally play. But, once you dial in the distance, they really roll nice.

With the wedge, they seem to spin a little less, but not drastically so.

In terms of appearance, the staff line of products always has a classy look and this ball is no exception. The large dimple pattern, near-translucent ionomer cover, and the odd numbering scheme (51, 52, etc.) will make this ball stand out from your playing partners. The alignment aid (----FIFTY----) is low key and among the most effective I've seen yet because it stresses precise aiming.

I can't wait to see how the Wilson Fifties perform off the driver and the irons. If they are comparable in distance and control, then I will gladly make these my ball of choice and use the $10 I'm saving per box over the Bridgestones for an extra bucket of balls or two at the range.

I found a 50 in the rough playing a round 2 weeks ago on the 2nd hole. I picked it up and decided to use it because it looked solid and it had a cool Rzorback logo on it. The ball lasted me the rest of that round and my next 2 rounds. Performance was great and I would highly recommend them. When I first picked the ball up just by the looks of it I thought it was Wilson's premium ball until I got home and read about it on their website. I didn't know they were so inexpensive. I think I will go pick up a dozen today.

Just don't go to T's driving range where you are, the green's used for putting and pitching are about a 2.5 on the stimp and will hold anything but I can gurantee you are already aware of this!!

Found Jeffersonville's Practice green is a higher stimp (GCSI said 10- 11 stimp) than the course and rolls nice. That was best practice green I have found without becoming a member at one of the overabundent private clubs in our area!

You guys should head south to DE and play the lovely Ed "Porky" Oliver Golf Club. The greens roll at about a 3 on the stimp and resemble concrete on your approach shots. I have been playing the 50 ball for a few weeks now and really like the overall performance of the ball.

I hated the 50, thought it was unmanageable and didnt always know what it would Do. It will work for many people but it didnt work for me!

How does it compare to the Pinnacle Exception?

I hear you loud and clear BDM, I am over at JVGC as often as possible and the 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 15th, are highly undulated are great "players" holes but the severe elevation change from back to front on 6 can really get you if you don't play it low with lots of spin, the 50 did that. 18 is real torturous and I think the most difficult green on the course and if you don't have enough spin on the ball to slow down the release, say goodbye simply because that right to left slope as you well know) will roll off instantly. You got to have a ball like the ProV's or other top premuim pills to have a chance but I was very happy to see a 2 piece wilson ball like the Fifty/50 hold this patch of ICE, Excellent cannot describe this ball but this ball can get real "stick" and has the playbility of a $50 dollar rock. Maybe I'll catch you out there sometime bro.

Jeffersonville is a good proving ground for any ball and the Fifty did great!

White Clay Creek is an interesting course as it is 7,000+ yards of target golf. I have played it about half a dozen times and the jury is still out as to if I like it or not.

Three Little Bakers is not a bad track, but a place that you need to play a few times in order to score well.

Check out Innescrone and Wyncote if you want two nice places to play. I played Innescrone a bunch when it was private and I hear it is even better now that it is public.

You can seriously skip Porky's, it is not memorable at all and a real dog track.

I played a sleeve of 50/50, usually play the HX Tour and also tried out the D2 (a buddy gave me a few to try out). To be honest I like the HX tour the best, good distance and spins well for me. The 50/50 however was way too soft for me particularly off the putter face. It felt like I had to kill it to get it anywhere near the hole and I missed many putts short because of it. I played it over 3 rounds and all 3 produced the same result for me. The D2 felt a little better for me in terms of feel, a bit harder than the 50/50, but still too soft off the putter face for me to be comfortable with. I guess I just like the feel and feedback from a harder ball.

If I played tracks with softer greens, I'd prefer a harder ball as well. I can crush a Callaway HX Hot easily 15 yards farther than an HX Tour or even D2 Feel. Pinnacle Long Drive is even longer off the driver. But I've got zero chance of hitting my approach close, because the greens around here are rock-hard and slick as glass. I'll take less distance off the driver for a chance to stop the ball on the green with minimal release.

FINALLY going to get to put these in play tomorrow, at Center Square Golf Course. Never played there, but I'm hoping the greens are receptive to the Wilson 50's.

Finally got to put these in play today, and man I am impressed! I think this is the ball for me. I can't really speak about their performance off the driver (my slice is back, no fault of the ball), but hitting this ball off irons, especially wedges, is like butter, baby. I hit a couple of wedge shots where I was like, "Aww crap, it's past the hole, it's gonna roll off", but to my amazement, the ball took a hop or two and stopped dead. Awesome.

Another cool thing is that the balls have a pearlescent cover. Makes them very easy to spot if, like me, your drives are a bit wayward.

This ball is an absolute STEAL at $15.99. I'm gonna pick up more tomorrow (even though I used one ball for the entire round, and it's only slightly scuffed from *ahem* trying to knock down a tree).

Picked up a dozen this morning at golfsmith after a recommendation from one of the guys on here somewere and was very impressed. I lose to many balls to spend the bucks so I usually play the Nike Distance Soft, and the 50 smoked em today. I think I will make the switch as soon as my Target starts selling them

It's a great ball for you if you like the soft core hard cover type like Noodle, Srixon AD333, Nike soft.....

I played one sleeve and gave away the rest, still like the harder core and softer mantle and cover premium balls better.

If you like a slighty harder (60's compression instead of the Wilson 50/50 )and longer distance, try the Titleist Gran-Z, selling about $15 at Golf Galaxy, and many other golf discount stores.

My driver SS is around 95; my iron SS is around 90. I tend to swing slower and more in control with my irons. Hmmm...no wonder I'm slicing everything off the tee and stiffing my irons... ;)

I disagree with you in that the Wilson ball to me feels much different than the Noodle or the AD-333. The Ionomer cover on the 50 isn't as mushy as those balls. It is soft, but I have more feel with the putter with the Wilsons.

I will say this. I wouldn't like this ball as much on the greens if I was playing a soft insert putter like the 2-Ball. I could see where you would have issues with that combination.

I don't know what my swing speed is, but I hit a PW 140 yards and a 9 iron 150-155 yards. Everything I read on the net insisted that this was not the ball for me. I cannot hit another ball now, i like the 50 that much. I have only ever played premium balls, my last favorite being the 2007 ProV1. Even if this was priced $20 higher per dozen, i'd still be playing it. I hit at least 4-5 drives over 300 everytime i play and I have lost no distance with this ball. It doesn't spin like the ProV1, but the feel of the ball has made me replace this ball with the Titleist. I think the biggest boo boo about this ball is the lack of spin on short pitches. Overall, my short iron MP-33s hold the greens no problem. You have to give this ball a shot. You will not regret it.
