Shaker Run - Cincy

Anyone in the Cincy area played Shaker Run recently? I was thinking of running up to play 36 in the next few weeks and was wondering about the course condition. I love the course but the condition has been a bit hit or miss in recent years.

I played it the middle of June and it was in fantastic shape. Really enjoyed all 27 holes.

Would be better served hitting Heatherwoode a few miles up the road. Greens will definitely be better. Great 36 hole day would be Heatherwoode in the am and yankee trace in the afternoon. Would be better than shaker in my opinion having played all three of them for years while living there.

Agree with this guy. 2 great tracks right there. Nothing against shaker run I enjoy that course.

I may have to check those out. Looking on the web I wasn't able to find many pics of Heatherwoode. What is the layout like? One thing I always liked about Shaker (the original 18, don't really care for the newest 9) was the fact the the holes are so isolated through the woods and there are several severe elevation changes. Those are features most courses don't have. Is Heatherwoode like that or more of a traditional layout?

Since we are talking a little bit about Cincy area courses does Ivy Hills Golf Club compare to any of these?

Heatherwoode will give you more subtle elevation changes (Par 5 ninth hole drops a decent amount). Holes are not nearly as secluded as the holes at Shaker. Heatherwoode is more of a position course where you can (and should) leave driver in the bag quite often. I live 5 minutes from the course and it is always in immaculate condition.

With that said I played Shaker last week and while it's not all the way back to its "elite" level it is in very good shape. Unlike a couple of posters above, I am not that big of a fan of Yankee. On a side note Yankee is attempting to "validate" the 3rd nine they added and on multiple occasions I have called, made my tee time, and not been notified until arriving day of that the new 9 would make up half of my round. In no way does that 9 compare to the original and if I drove up and was put on it I wouldn't be happy. I take it you are coming up from Cincy? If so I would go to Heatherwoode in the morning and then hit up Shaker on your way back home. To each his own though.

Coming from Lexington. There is plenty of nice golf in my area (I am a member of Champion Trace which is a super track), but you rarely see the layout you get with the original 18 at Shaker which is why it was always a favorite back in the day when it was in super condition. That's why I was asking about the Heatherwoode layout style in comparison. If Shaker is in good shape, Heatherwoode would have to be really nice to jump Shaker on my list.

Although I have not played Shaker Run YET, I can speak on Heatherwoode. FANTASTIC course, great shape, great layout and if you like water on a course, I think they said 14 of the 18 holes have water on them? One of my favorite courses I've played in Ohio.

I played Shaker Run last weekend. Great course layout, one of my favorite courses to play in the Cincy/Dayton area. A few of the greens were a bit rough, but nothing that would keep me from going back and playing again.
