People who hit nice balls at the range

Yeah most likely stray balls. Unlikely that guys are going to be hitting nice balls on a range. I however am saving all my old, slightly scuffed provs for when I do my next driver fitting so that could be another explanation albeit unlikely

The range is where you practice distance control. It's important to know exactly how far you consistently hit your various clubs. Unfortunately, range balls have a reputation for being consistently inconsistent.

When one of my golf balls get beatup to the point I'm going to retire it, I take it to the range and (after I've warmed up) use it to benchmark my distance on a particular club.

I would never use new balls for this, but used? 3rd quality Pro-V1s can be had from lostgolfball.com for about $1 a ball(other brands are cheaper). A $100 investment, would allow you to lock down your dstances with each club (8 balls per club).

I work at a golf course as a cart boy. One of my jobs is to pick the range. The amount of Pro V1s, Pentas, well just nice balls in general is ridiculous. Like who hits a $50 a dozen golf ball out onto the range!?!?! But hey their loss is my gain.
I do this all the time! Well, not the last two generations of ProV1's so much,. I have a ball retreiver so I find and scoop approximately 50 balls per round without even interrupting my pace. These accumulate so fast that I never have to buy range buckets, I just hit away the brands I won't game. And I still have maybe 2000 balls in the garage. All I will play are ProV's, Pentas and Lethal and TP, FG Tour's (that no one plays), and the odd really good Nike RZN or Bridgestone. All the others and every single Callaway are just range fodder, I don't care how new they are. They get hit so I save six bucks on chewed up, distance limited range balls.

Happens a lot where I used to work too. Ton's of non range balls were picked and thrown into a bucket. Employees loved to just stock up on balls for free from the bucket.

My guess is since we use limited flight balls customers hit their own balls with driver to check distance. All the stray premium balls were always towards the back of the net.

I use premium balls that have been played and scuffed or cut alittle when hitting driver on the range sometimes. Range balls can be hell on a drivers face
I do the same thing. Especially the day of a tournament. I struggle with my driving so I like to see how I'm really hitting it before I go out.

One time my buddy picked up a sleeve of pro V1s when we checked in for our round (which in a golf course pro shop run about $15 for a sleeve). He emptied the sleeve into his pocket figuring those would be what he played with that day. We went to the range to hit a warmup bucket.

Without even realizing it, he reached into his pocket and teed up a brand new Pro V1 and blasted it down the range. Then he did it a second time. Not thinking, just reaching into his pocket and putting them on the tee. Then, when he only had 1 ball left he finally realized what he had just done. Ha!! And to top it all off, he lost that ball on the 2nd hole.

I'm ok with losing a $4 golf ball if I hit it into the water on the golf course, but deliberately, purposefully teeing them up and donating them to the range? This is madness.

I always assumed those would be stray balls hit by people playing holes adjacent to the range. Can't imagine anyone purposefully hitting premium balls onto the range...

Our range is now where near any of the holes......

I guess I've learned something today.

Ha, at least I am sure he let's everyone play through so he can follow their lost shots in the woods. I hope he is not taking these balls to a real range while not paying them anything, but I have a feeling.,.,

How is this stealing from them? Didn't he just add a bunch of balls to their range supply?
He probably meant that that the guy was not paying to use the range, even if he did add balls to the supply.

Ok, just negotiate your preferred method of payment and not ask the business owner. Do you go to a restaurant and pack a lunch too?

As long as we all know that when you show up at the course and their are range balls littering the range that you walk in and buy a bucket before hitting the course, we are fine. You are a better person than the rest of us.
