True Temper EI-70 Shaft -- As good as most of the "new" shafts?

Recommended Posts

So last week, I took out an old Callaway Steelhead Plus 3-wood that is shafted with a True Temper EI-70.

I was instantly reminded of why I played the EI-70 in ALL of my woods back in the 90's and early 2000's.

Perhaps it just fits my swing better, but I knocked the absolute HELL out of it. It was as long as my current 3 wood, which is a Callaway X Hot Pro with a ProForce V2.

Anyone else a fan of the EI-70? I think it is quite possibly as good as most of the new shafts out there.

If you have a club with one in it, take it out and do a comparison. I was very impressed.

The EI70 was a fantastic shaft in its day, just at the time it was a top shaft, it was a little on the heavy side for me. At that point I was playing a Grafalloy Prolite 35 which is one of the older shafts that I still swear by.

I think he would be the first to tell you that even though two shafts could look alike on paper, the way a person responds to how they feel makes a big difference in how they are swung and how a golfer is fitted. Good job feigning ignorance about the overall point, though.

Its a good shaft there is no doubt there - Most people have fond memories of this and other shafts of that era like Prolite. Compared to todays shafts - It has a more epoxy and lesser graphite, shaft to shaft consistency is not as good. There are shafts today with similar ballflight yet much better feel, feel drives your swing, swing drives your consistency.

Therefore its not really as good as today's shafts...

Distance average has only gone up a couple yards in last 10 years. So newer shafts are more accurate? Or what? The two phrases "amateur golfer" and "accuracy" usually correlate very little.

[color=#272727][size=4]"If you take a look at the average driving distance on all male professional tours for which data is available (PGA Tour, Web.com Tour, European Tour, Japan PGA Tour and Champions Tour) in the decade since the Joint Statement was released (2003-2012), the overall average has moved minimally: Two yards during that time (282.7 to 284.7). Are any pros still playing this shaft?

I just yanked one in nice condition from Goodwill, True Temper EI-70 stiff flex.

Thinking about putting it in one of my woods' head - not sure which - I have a SS of around 105.

Bit of a bump on this thread. Tonight went for a driver fitting by a well known club fitter in north west England.

Had my 12 degree SLDR on launch monitor with the Matrix RUL stiff shaft. Was getting 114-117 mph swing speed, 150 mph ball speed and the launch angle was 17 degrees so was carrying 260-270 yards.

Clearly the shaft was not right for me.

So I awaited the news that I would net a £200 shaft.... Nope. True Temper E1-70 in an x stiff.

I enquired why that?

The answer... "Because after 30 years of fitting and making clubs it does what it says on the tin as good as any £200+ shaft out there"

The improvents are marginal.

Looking forward to getting it. He reckons the low flight heavy shaft and 12 degree forgivness in the loft is a perfect combo.

Last week I decided to do some Fall cleaning and found a old Titleist 975F 13.5 3-Wood in my garage. It has the TT EI-70 Stiff shaft. I don't have any bad memories of swinging this club. I'm going to run to my local golf mart and have them slap a new grip on there for me and throw it back in my bag. It'll stick out like a sore thumb next to my M1, R15 Rescue, rsi2 irons and EF wedges but if it performs as well as I remember than I'll be grateful this club didn't get put in the give away box years ago

It must be old home week. Went to our storage unit this week and saw my old callaway 3+ wood with my Ei-70 stiff shaft in it. Said to myself put it in the bag and see what happens. Wow hit it 3 times on the course and longer and straighter than my currentTM 3W. Felt really good so will keep it in the bag for awhile and see what happens.

Lol, still game the Orlimar Trimetal 14+ with this shaft! Solid is the best word I can come up with. The Titleist 904f with Aldila NV is a close second for me...your mileage may vary!

Shafts aren't about distance, they are about feel and control for the individual player as well as manufacturing quality consistency. The thing that has changed over the years has primarily been feel and what is possible at different shaft weights. Now if you have something that feels good, it doesn't matter what it is, new or old since feel is personal. Higher quality, more exotic materials won't necessarily make a better shaft for everyone, but they do make some damn good feeling and good performing products.

Regarding the EI-70, I definitely remember that being THE shaft to have back then, I'd love to grab one a long with a Prolite 35 and test it against the new stuff!

Had the EI-70 in an Adams Tour 3 wood head I got from the tour rep at a Senior tour event when I was caddying for my Dad. I was hitting it way late in the day after a practice round and literally hitting it 300 on a rope. The rep said you better just keep that. Lol. That club was unreal and that shaft was so consistent with a heavier weight but balanced so well. I’m sure it competes nicely with the newer stuff. Hard to believe that was 20 years ago.
