Joe Powell Golf maker of great persimmons to close this fall

Recommended Posts

I received an email today from John Powell, president of Joe Powell Golf in Sarasota, Florida. He said he will be closing his business soon. He will be open until around late October. Personally this makes me very sad, the world of persimmon just got a bit smaller. I can't say I could not see this day coming. I met John in April and saw his facility, it was a fantastic experience for me. I wish John nothing buy the best in the future..

Joe Powell golf made a Driver for me a couple of years ago. I recently had them make me a set of 2, 3 & 4 woods to go with the Driver - same stain, insert, etc. The clubs are beautiful, play superbly and I will treasure them for as long as I can play golf. I'm very glad I got them before the company closes down.

It's great shame to see that artisan skills and craft have less and less place in the modern world - and not just in golf.

Vale Joe Powell Golf. Thank you for your work.

Certainly a sad day for golf when Joe Powell is no more... one of the good guys.
I bought loads of their clubs years ago when the UK distributer closed down and plenty are in the playing rotation bags.
I also have a few with R flex shafts that I will be looking to move on if anyone is interested? Wrong flex for me and I'd rather someone hit them or re-shaft them.
If any interest then let me know and I can send pictures or post them here.
List as follows and all brand new and un hit:
Classic with the Hickory imitation Novus graphite shaft as pictured above. Neumann Leather grip of course!
Ltd Edition driver 215 / 250 with R300 Steel
Ltd Edition driver 151 / 250 with R300 Steel
PBG Black Gold Driver with R300 Black Gold shaft
A Gleneagles commemorative driver with R3 PTS steel shaft. This was a more limited run than the Ltd Edition from memory

I also have 2 of the Ryder Cup 1993 Ltd Edition Drivers that were produced by Kingsley Drummond complete with full length commemorative covers.

ANy interest then let me know before they head to Ebay :(

Well before John closed up, I blew a work bonus on 11 fairway woods so am now up to 26 wooden clubs as follows:

Joe Powell DSP J1 - 1,3,4,5

Joe Powell DSP J2 - 1,3,5

Joe Powell DSP J3 - 1,3,4,5

Joe Powell DSP GT - 1,3,4,5

Joe Powell PT1W - 1,Smoker, 4, 5

Joe Powell PBG - 1,1,Smoker, 3, 5

Joe Powell Ltd Edition - 1,Smoker
Plus a new set of Joe Powell Original blades 3-SW and a Pincher 55.

If I ever see a PT1W 3-wood and a Limited Edition 4 or 5 on eBay I think that will be me done on Joe Powell :)

Could you post a pic of those Limited drivers..?
Fred - The Limited Edition Powells are the ones I collected. My PT1W D8-sw I hit as well as any persimmon driver in my arsenal. The gamer Limited Edition driver I can hit as hard but less consistent. I do game the matching LE smoker and 4 wood. My Masters MP29s and my Cameon Reason M400 I've gamed over 20 years in my green MacKenzie Walker with matching head covers make up my #1 classic bag. The latter a generous 50th BD present from my brother. Also, I was very lucker to get 2 older mint Powell drivers on Ebay. The older Limited Edition does not have the crown signature and has a Powell Neumann leather grip. The J2 has a Neumann grip as well and I will game it this spring. So Jack's driver was D4-D5 I was glad to see in other thread.

TSteph, Yes, I realized the Limited is the model you collected. I don't think I've seen your 2nd one, so thanks for posting. Those are great looking heads, I really like the grain on the Limited without the "JP sig on the top". What shaft is in that? Nice touch with the black "JP" leather grip. Also like the club w the W/R/W insert.

I have a couple of Powells I really like. The one I looked at in his show room the DSP-J1, 43 inches long, S300, D2 SW is a real solid head, which I can hit really sell. As I noted in April my experience visiting John Powell with my 4 year old son is something I will always remember. It was such a unique experience. It was really like "going back into time". Panel walls, late 80s mint condition carpet, his Mom at a typewriter answering the phone at a 70s style desk, looking at brand new persimmons on the wall, seeing his shop where he hand makes clubs.. I thought it was 1986 all over again.

Don't know much about those J-Matic ones OSR ... probably 1970s ? They look in great shape and I think you should buy them !

Also of interest to any of those wot golf basakawards ( :) ) I saw this 1,3,4 set of left hand DSP J4s on eBay yesterday ... graphite shafts which the seller has said are HL A (HL for High Launch, A presumably = Senior Flex.)

A snip at $25 .. they look pretty mint to my eye !

Well played BJ.

Was going to try and get them out to the range this evening, but it was closed. I have lost a day, thinking today Tuesday and under the impression that I would have tomorrow to adjust to them before Thursday's event. I was just notified that this is in fact Wednesday evening. Found out in a humbling way when I tried to order the Tuesday special at the local Crab and Seafood Shack.

I guess we will find out on the first tee tomorrow...

I realize this is an old thread about Joe Powell Persimmon WOODS but, I feel the need to let everyone know that I just acquired a set (2-SW) of Joe Powell cavity back, forged irons similar to Hogan Edge's yesterday.

I will try and get some pictures posted soon. In the meantime, does anyone have any information on them?

They appear to be late 80's/early 90's issue. The cavity has the cursive "Joe Powell", the top line has the word "FORGED", the sole has the club number stamped at the toe and the heel has no print or script.

Randy, they could be the perfect match for your Joe Powell persimmon woods (assuming you still have them)!!!

STAY TUNED!!!

I had this exact CB iron for years. John built them for me at the factory. As you stated... They are quite similar to the Hogan Edge
