Carelessness costs!

Can only blame myself but still cannot completely understand why somebody would do this. A couple of days ago, I played at Woods Valley Golf Club in Valley Center California. A tricky loop with lots of water, very narrow fairways and you have to know how to navigate. Anyway, I digress. Upon completion of the round and after returning the cart, I happened to notice when I got back to the casino, that I had left my head covers in the cart. I went back to the course the next day and all that was turned in was driver cover (which happens to have a hole in it), the other practically new covers were not there. I have to assume that somebody took them, whether an employee or a group following me in, who is to say? I left my name and number, but I am not holding my breath as to their recovery. Why would anybody take them? Surely they already have covers, and probably not even the same equipment (TM SLDR-MINI and 3 Adams Hybrid Covers). Swap meet sales? maybe. So much for honor and integrity. I kind of suspect the twosome that waved me up. No evidence of course, except for the fact they were a couple of ol codger types, that were rarely hitting from the fairway. Not sure what sort of game they were playing, but it appeared they were doing some sort of twosome best ball as it looked as though they were always chipping on and putting from the same spot while their tee shots were usually on opposite sides of the fairway in the rough (or water), ie one of them would pick up.

Sorry, but you have no one to blame but yourself. You've got $800 - $1000 worth of clubs rattling around getting damaged as you drive around for 18 holes. Club covers belong on the clubs, not in the back of the cart. End of story.

ha,ha I am well aware of where the blame lies. While your response is a bit harsh, it is right on. Not the point I was making though.

People are flawed and breaking Commandment #10 leads to breaking #8. I'd bet the pro shop has no real idea of how many head covers (and whatever else) are left behind and what is done with them. Maybe they don't want to know.

I lost a putter cover a while back and the next day I asked one of the cart guys. He pointed me to inside the cart barn where they had three huge plastic garbage cans filled with head covers and told me to have at it. There was just about every kind of head cover imaginable in those cans but i didn't find mine (not a big deal). People think it is finders keepers these days. Sad. Next time you are there, ask in the cart barn.

I have no idea of what those commandments are without looking them up. I can only surmise they have something to do with stealing and bearing false witness. I made no direct accusations, only a postulation. In any event, carelessness on my part in no way condones the act of a petty thief. To the credit of the employee behind the counter, he took my number and said he would personally check the cart barn when he got off shift and call me if he found anything. It is a little strange that only the driver cover, albeit damaged, was the only one returned to lost and found when all five were left in the cart. Of course, this sort of thing happens all the time. Still, the "finders keepers" argument holds no weight what-so-ever.

I had the opposite experience last month. I was visiting the Detroit area and played a few rounds before the event that I was in town for. At the end of the week when I was packing up my stuff for the flight home I realized that I didn't have my golf GPS. I knew I had it during my last round (at Fox Hills in Plymouth Michigan) earlier in the week. I called the pro shop and sure enough they had my GPS which someone had turned in. I picked it up at the course on my way to the airport. I do believe that most golfers are honest.

#10 Thou shalt not covet...
#8 Thou shalt not steal...

I would think what LittleLeftToRight found is more the norm. At courses where cart use is heavy, I'd bet that they have dozens of covers in a single week.

If I had a dime for all the stuff I have turned in...

I don't get why people would make off with someone else's stuff. For someone to say, "You only have yourself to blame," I call BS!! We all forget things. Those who are to blame are the ones who absconded with your possessions!

I suppose its scale of economy. The GPS has more value and people would consider it theft if not turned in. They might regard something as miniscule as a few head covers fair game. Kind of like being a "little bit pregnant". A THIEF is a THIEF! Those who may condone such activity are not much better. I also realize that the items may simply have been misplaced while cleaning the cart and are still laying around somewhere, but the fact that one cover was turned in would seem to dispute that theory. Its not as if they were found laying in the middle of a fairway rather than taken out of a parked cart. If someone took them, it was a deliberate act. Its not a huge deal, its just the principle involved. Of course, its my fault for being negligent, but again, in no way excuses the alleged criminal actions of the cheap, integrity lacking, vanity capping, sleeze bags involved. Most golfers honest? apparently some are not. (caveat, is IF that is what happened). In any event...END OF STORY.

Two thoughts here:

1) I was in Dufftown, Scotland, and the fellow who took me to their course found out that he had a hole in his bag about 2/3 through our game. And that he was missing his wallet, shortbread cookies, a bottle of whisky and a few other items. Also on that day, I misplaced my iPhone! He drove around the course and found everything except the wallet, cookies & bottle of Scotch. (Got my phone, yay!!) When we got back to the clubhouse, his wallet and cookies were where he left them, on the bumper of the other golf cart in front of us! He never did find that bottle though...

2) If I find anything on the course, except golf balls, I turn them into lost & found. How do you guys feel about turning golf balls into lost & found? Does anyone do that? I'm of the opinion that often when my ball goes into the rough, it might change its number, its logo, or even sometimes its color! Strange how that works ;)

In my 18 years of playing golf, (I am 26) I have only lost one head cover. That being said, I generally look for a replacement at stores like Golfsmith to have, just in case. You can usually pick one up for $5. I have a SLDR driver and bought a replacement HC a few weeks ago, just in case I lost mine. I may be wasting $5 on something I will never use, but I can always sell it on Ebay if I want. In high school, I worked at the course I lived on. We had several boxes of hc's of all kinds. If someone lost a particular one, we usually had 2-3 just like the one they lost. We would just replace it out of that box. What was crazy was how many clubs were left unclaimed. After a year or so, we would cut them down, re-grip and donate them to our junior golf program. It was a good way to introduce the game to children and get them a few clubs to start with. Most higher end clubs would get claimed, but we had a lot of knock off models that were left.

That is commendable. Once again, this is not a huge thing and there are those who may believe I am making a fuss over nothing but the one or two who seem to think that just because I left some items in a golf cart during a round for the sake of convenience (regardless of how ill advised), that I deserved it. They are still missing the point, taking anybody's property no matter how insignificant, is not alright. They are thieves, plain and simple. It only goes to show the permissive nature of our society. There is no honor anymore. Golfers honest? Not so sure about that, cheating on handicap, using the old foot wedge, taking free drops, improving their lie, or just lying in general. Tall tales, heck they are worse than fishermen. Yes, I am making a fuss over nothing. Yes, I am to blame for placing convenience over good sense. Not-withstanding that since I have a cart bag and if stood vertical, not that much prone to club rattle, just the same not advisable. If indeed it happened that somebody removed the items, it was a deliberate act. It was not something of little value that was "found". The HC are most certainly replaceable, but that's not the point.
Oh well, everybody has their own set of values. Moving on.

Interesting that you said you returned the cart so I'm curious how suspicion could somehow fall onto another group on the course and why that group in particular would be suspect? Because they were old codgers and apparenly playing a scramble makes them likely thieves?

not what I meant at all, they would have been right behind me. As for the impression they left on me, not something one could put their finger on, just an overall feeling (wrong and unjustified as that might be). You pick up certain "vibes" from people. Definitely very wrong on my part, however, my impressions of people often turn out to be right. Just like internet personalities, usually wrong, but not always. Yes, I am very, very, wrong in pre-judgment, but as I said, my past experiences often dictate my "hunches" are sometimes well founded.

edit: although being the somewhat "perfect" person that I am, I have made a mistake once or twice in my life.

Exact opposite happened to me a couple of weeks ago. My brother and I took my 2 year old nephew to the course to ride along with us for 9 holes. Our dad came and brought his video camera, only to leave it in the cart when we left. I went back by the next morning after it was discovered missing, and sure enough it was sitting behind the counter in the pro shop...

My Girlfriend lost my back up driver cover.

She was given a 1 hour lecture on putting the head cover back on the club after every shot.

She hasn't lost one since. Although she has left a putter against the cart and we had to go back a hole to get it.

I lost a pair of sun glasses worth $280.00 took them off and didn't get them back out of the cart. I gave myself a hard time about it for a while.

i was always thought to take care of my belongings, leaving them in the cart was a mistake. I try not to make any mistakes now :)
Thank you. The noise of uncovered clubs as someone drives a cart reminds me of breaking glass. Just makes me cringe. By the way I would have turned them into the pro shop if I found them.

As a side note I should mention that Dunham's sells head cover this time of year for 99 cents. They always have a bin of them. Just get they ones for some cheapo club then you won't be advertising what you really have in your bag.

If they were left in the cart, I suspect it's as likely that the kid who cleaned out the cart just tossed them as they were taken. Unfortunate. You might check back in another week or so though. I can tell you I've picked up stray clubs/covers, etc. to turn in when I've found them on the course and on more than once occasion forgotten to turn them in immediately after the round (stuck it in my bag, etc.). I figure it out later and always return the to lost and found at the course but I'm ashamed to say it's sometimes been a few days or even a few weeks later.

its moot now. I did check back as you suggested, and as I mentioned before, the only one that was turned into the front office was the driver cover which had a hole in it, the other four remain a mystery. no matter, my fault.

I ALWAYS turn items in I find, no exceptions. I found a plastic putter stand, worth $10, and actually was looking to buy one. Nonetheless, IT'S NOT MINE, and I turned it in. I left a 6 iron on one hole at MSU course and was pleased/relieved that someone with integrity turned it in. I don't care what I find, if it isn't mine, I turn it in. It gives me satisfaction knowing I made somebody happy.

I have found more headcovers than I care to count. Every major wedge brand multiple times an Odyssey putter and a Cameron putter. Both in the woods off the green (I figure the golfers who pitched them in there would be back to reclaim them at some point), sunglasses, a trail of golf balls (someone left there bag unzipped and I just scooped them up, caught up to him and gave them back), Frogger towels, and cell phones.

I have found golf tees on just about every tee box, but I generally leave those be.

Found a brand new slope-enabled rangefinder in a cart once. I could only imagine the Karma SMACKDOWN for not turning in things, no matter what they are.
I always imagine how crushed I'd be if someone took my stuff instead of turning it in.

I think this was Karma for letting 5 clubs bang around in your bag. NAUGHTY.
