Favorite shot with Favorite Club

Hey Guys,

Been thinking it would fun to get a thread going where you tell us your favorite club, what your favorite shot to play with it is, and what features of the club you believe help you achieve this.

I think this would be a good way for others to gain knowledge and test clubs based upon what other players believe the club is best suited for.

1. Favorite Club

2. Favorite Shot to play with said club

3. Features/Design Aspects of the club/shaft that you feel help you accomplish this shot.

While I love all of my clubs I'll say my favorite(s) are my 3 wood and my 2 hybrid.

Favorite shot with them is definitely the high draw.

Both clubs are just bombers for me. The heads are hot and feel super solid at impact. I actually have a very light shaft in the 3 wood and I think that helps me somehow.

18 Degree Cleveland Classic Hybrid
Low draw
Not sure why, probably face angle and offset.

With every other hybrid I've had, the pull hook was always a danger, it would stop me from trying a draw as more often than not, it would end with a big hook. I can happily draw this hybrid and if it doesn't work out, it will just go dead straight anyway.

Mizuno MP-14 6 iron
Medium knockdown draw

I can really play just about any shot with this club, but there's a 168yd par 3 at a seaside course I frequent that just about always plays into the wind. 170 is a solid 7 iron for me, but a smooth 6 is so much easier to control and I'm always on or near the green with that shot.

6 iron to a 180 yard pin tucked back left behind a bunker. Right now my shot is a mid-high fade so I can access the back flag with a little roll-out from the draw if the lie requires it or drop it and stop it within an acceptable distance. I think the MP-4 sole helps me to put a strong move on the ball without worrying about digging and leaving it short. Sticking with the S300 shaft and not messing around with what has worked before gives confidence.

backup favorite is a longer bunker shot (25-40 yards) with the 56 degree wedge. I would actually prefer to be in a bunker (with sand in it) than most rough here in California as the grasses here can be a mix of clump and playable.

1. 3 wood (Callaway XHot Pro)
2. Off the tee
3. See my friend's face when I outdrived them after a long and nice flight in the fairway, while they still struggle with the big stick.

Why take my driver when I can hit the ball 270 yards pretty much everywhere I want.

1. Callaway X-Forged 62 degree wedge
2. 30 yard pitch, with ball slightly back in my stance
3. With the old mac daddy grooves, the ball takes one or two hops, and stops on a dime. Of course, I'm left picking shavings off the ball, but I love that shot.

1. Titleist 913 (soon to be 915) d2 driver.
2. "go to" Low cut shot (my favorite way to find a tight fairway)
3. The look of the club is what does it for me. It's the ideal driver shape for my eye. Yes the shaft and everything else is fit to my specs but the look/feel/ and familiarity i have with the Titleist d2 drivers is what i love. I know it's going to cut and not pull hook.

Great answers so far guys. Guess i will join in too!

Favorite Club: Taylormade dual Rescue 21* hyrbid with Fujikura Banzai shaft (x Flex)
Favorite Shot: My home course has a lot of 165ish Par 3's and I just choke down a bit on it and give it a nice full swing and the stiffer than what i usually play shaft gives me a nice tight dispersion, and I go pin hunting with it playing a 2-3 yard fade. I can't get enough of this shot.
Aspect leading to success of this shot: stiffer shaft; tighter dispersion.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

G25 15* 3wood.

Nutted cut shot off the deck that lands on the green 5 feet short from the hole. Only happened once.

But 3wood nutted off the deck is a phenomenal feeling even if it doesn't land on the green for an eagle/birdie putt.

Probably the flat and stretched back head on the g25 makes it easy off the deck. Cut/fade shot is the only shot that I can hit with a fairway wood. Regardless off draw/fade bias etc.

Mizuno MP 30 3 iron / DG S300
Low Draw/Hook
I think the blade-like setup of the club helps pull the shot off, but having played a lot of golf in the Northwest, and with my driver miss being left, I've found myself with plenty of opportunities to practice hitting the low draw/hook under the trees as a 2nd shot. Actually very comfortable hitting the low draw off the tee as well on short par 4's...

Hitting the G wedge in my 850 forged set. Just seems like I've always got a makeable birdie putt when I pull it out. Really easy to hit and very forgiving. Feels great and doesn't suck back like my 50* vokey I used to use did.

  • 3 years later...

Big high cut with my driver. I usually start it out in the rough and bring it back consistently. I'm capable of a high draw also, but that comes with a big two way miss for me.
