Cabot Links

Recommended Posts

Flying home to Cape Breton next Wednesday. First time I've been home in a while and have a round booked at Cabot Links which is about an hour from my home town. When I moved away 8 years ago the course wasn't built at that time. Scored a deal at $60.00 CAD for 18 holes. Anyone play there and if so what are your thoughts? Cheers!

I am from Cape Breton myself and haven't had the chance to play it since I am in Alberta... would love to get the chance to do so... I hear comparisons to pebble Beach... I am interested more now because I have played Pebble Beach and I find it hard to believe that any holes at Cabot will compare to Arrowhead point ( 6, 7, and 8 ) at Pebble beach... 18 is also monumental. I would love to hear your thoughts post round... good luck and enjoy.

I played CL back in September 2012 so it has had another year to mature. Went with a friend who is going back again this weekend with his wife.

We stayed on site and the accommodations were nice with high quality fittings but weren’t elaborate or “fancy”. Lots of space in the room and very comfortable. Food in the onsite restaurant was excellent! The seafood chowder may well have been the best I have ever had.

We had caddies for the first day and before we went out were advised that it would play different from what we were used to. Turf was very firm, including the greens and run up shots were the desired approach. Farirways were generous with a lot of undulations, humps, bumps and bunkers with a couple of blind tee shots. They ran fast and overall I didn't find the course particularly difficult off the tee.

Approaches to the greens and the greens are where thing got really interesting. Around most greens there was a lot of humps bumps, backstops, etc. Greens were pretty large (at least for what I am used to) with many different undulations. They weren't really fast and need a year or two more maturing but ran pretty true. Like everywhere the greens are very firm. Even you high spins guys will have difficulties holding approaches on these things. In several cases the best shot was to land 30yds short and run it up.

Every hole has a view of the ocean and 6 on the back nine play right along the beach. Wind was a factor at all times and I found the whole place to be quite spectacular. It may well become my new favourite place to play. In comparison I have played Whistling Straits and the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island and they are in no way a “links” course the way Cabot Links is. Edit I played in September 2013 not 2012

Make sure you take a tour of Cabot Cliffs. When it opens it'll be one of the best in the world according to everyone I've talked to about it.

I have been fortunate enough to platy Cabot Links 4 times over the last 2 years, I can say that it is the most enjoyable golf experience that I have ever had. it is very forgiving off the tee but will challenge you to get the ball close on the greens. I am looking forward to going back next summer when Cabot Cliffs opens as from all of what I have heard an seen it should be spectacular, Matt Ginella is saying it could open in the top 10 in the world, even if it is top 25 that would be amazing.

Really enjoying this thread. I have gone to the Cabot Links website more than a few times to look wide eyed at the pictures!

I grew up spending a lot of time with my family in Cape Bretton and PEI. Would love to go back now and play. Someday soon I hope...

Judge, you can make a pretty awesome golf trip to Cape Breton Island. A bunch of very nice course all pretty close together.

A buddy and I played Cabot Links last fall, on a breezy, misty, and chilly day. A truly typical linksy kinda day. I was a great experience even if I think hypothermia set in on the back nine. Bad9 pretty much hit it on the head. A really neat experience, almost magical. Cannot wait til I get another crack at it, and it's sister next fall. Cliffs opens next summer, but I'm gonna give it a couple more months to mature some. It's sure to become a great buddies trip destination, especially if the Canadian dollar stays weak. That much more value for our US friends.
