Best golf course Area, Memphis, New Orleans or Nashville?

Recommended Posts

Me and my 2 pals need advice from American locals please.

Which of the above 3 areas has the best golf courses?

Which has the best nightlife for our age(late forties)? By nightlife good bars with live music/good atmosphere/American feel.

These 3 areas look interesting from afar and we love golf, so we feel it could be a really good trip before we hang up our nightlife boots probably more or less forever....

PS: If these 3 areas are not a good idea, we will just go to New York and do that with trips out to good golf course areas,

I lived in New Orleans my entire life....until moving to Nashville in 2005. I am 52, and Nashville has by far the better of both worlds. Much better quality courses and a great nightlife for hanging out and listening to great music.

New Orleans can't be beat for food.
Thank you. Any advice is great for us. We are beginning the planning phase now and will book flights etc before Christmas. What about Texas? Any good for golf/nightlife? We need to watch Man V Food re-runs to brush up on food venues.

I would not consider New Orleans a golf destination by any means. Food, yes. Music, yes. Golf, Nah. Not a lot of courses, much less quality courses with making a trip for. There's a few, but they're pricey compared to what's on the MS coast.
I wish it wasn't so since I live across the lake from it.

Of the three places you mentioned, go to Nashville. The golf situation will be solid, and the nightlife will be excellent. However, if Texas is a possibility, go to Austin. Golf options will be much better and nightlife will be every bit as good if not better. Great food in Austin also.

Ok thanks Nashville/Austin seems to be the most recommended. That helps our narrow our search preparation.

Why Memphis is receiving no love is beyond me. There are a variety of very fine courses on which to play (Colonial, Miramichee, Spring Creek, TPC at Southwind to name a few), some very fine restaurants (Erlin Jenson's, Interim, Iris as well as Interstate BBQ for those who love the south's best BBQ) and a variety of nightlife venues. Memphis is one of the music capitals of the world and one is likely to find any number of big name musicians playing there at any given time. In addition, there are several casinos just south of Memphis (about 30 miles) in Robinsonville that offer a variety of entertainment options. Nashville is a classier city, New Orleans has the best food and is a voluptuary's delight but, for the best balance of golf, great food and night life, Memphis is the king (pun intended [ok, for those who don't know: you can visit that bastion of banana and peanut butter sandwiches called Graceland, the King's castle, only in Memphis]).

Here is the problem with the choices...none of them are good destinations for golf. Very underwhelming actually. Nashville has a great strip for country music, but you have to like country. Memphis has great BBQ, but you are just as likely to get shot as getting a good dinner. New Orleans has a great atmosphere for about a 4 block radius. Outside of that, you might as well be in Memphis.

If I were planning a trip like that, I would head to one of the following spots:

Vegas/Mesquite: lots of live music options as well as anything else you want to get into. Stay in Vegas or Mesquite and you've got fantastic golf options around you between Mesquite and St. George.

Phoenix/Tucson: Great golf, great live music in campus bars and just absolutely stunning talent walking around.

Those places won't be as cold as the rest of where you were planning to go around Christmas. Good luck.
Thanks the avoiding being shot issue would be a big plus. I don,t know how guys can relax over with your families subject to that risk even when leading your peaceful lives. Its a big shame. My trips to the USA previously I have loved. Vegas, New York, LA, Orlando and Key West, but there is always that what if. I would not allow me to not enjoy visiting the States. I love your generally positive attitude and warm welcome.

As one who has traveled, the above response is a bit like suggesting to one who wants to visit England, stay in London and forgo the many other rich, historical regions of that great Island nation or, for those who wish to visit France, eschew Les Baux, the Rhone Valley, the Loire for Paris. Don't go to Entre Deuxs Mers, only Pauillac. Las Vegas may have a lot of glitz and t**** but, it has little soul. If one is worried about being shot, stay out of every big city. I attended graduate school in New York. Murder happened often there in those days. I am sure if you roam heedlessly in bad or desperate neighborhoods in any prominent city, you may risk harm. Of course, a well informed traveler will avoid the dicey areas in which he travels unless he happens to be looking for rough trade (see Jean Genet). I have experienced crime in no large city, even as a tourist. I was careful as any traveler should be. To dismiss Memphis or New Orleans as dangerous locales is to betray an ignorance of their genuine charm, history and current reality. My mother attended college in New Orleans. As a child I visited that town with great frequency. I never encountered a problem. As an adult, I have visited NOLA from time to time and, again, each time with no hint of crime. I was born two hours south of Memphis and I have spent as much or more time in that city as any. I am more than familiar with the Brooks Museum, Dixon Gallery and Garden, the Memphis Botanical Garden, the Memphis Symphony as well as a dozen very fine golf courses in and a round that city. The fine dining available in that city is exceptional. For those who love the Blues and rock and roll, Memphis offers a plethora of venues for listening pleasure as well as historical places such as Stax Recording Studio and Sun Recording Studio. And golf courses? Oh, hell, what does the PGA know? What a bunch of dimwits. They must be out of their minds to have stops in Memphis and New Orleans. I am sure that the putt putt courses in soulless Las Vegas must be much more interesting tracts than the TPC at Southwind, home of the FedEx/St. Jude Classic and the Pete Dye designed TPC Louisiana where the Zurich Classic is held.

I am sure Chilidog has good reason to like Phoenix and Vegas and I could hardly say that one shouldn't visit the fine golf courses in each of those city's areas but, please, do not so easily dismiss historic, complex and interesting American venues such as Memphis and New Orleans.

By the way, Many of my European friends enjoy flying into Memphis, staying there a few days, renting a car and driving to New Orleans. On the way, they stop through Mississippi Delta towns, as well as the port cities of Vicksburg and Natchez on their way south to the Big Easy.

We'll, to be fair I only stated facts. New Orleans is 3rd in the US in murder rates per capita and Memphis 14th. New York didn't crack the top 100. Neither did Phoenix or Las Vegas.

While I agree with the soul and entertainment part of what you wrote and being a well seasoned traveler with over 2,000,000 airline miles logged globally, Memphis and New Orleans have presented me with some of the worst situations of my life.

1) stayed at a Courtyard in South Memphis when I had to see a customer in Landis, MS. Was walking out of the hotel that morning when I heard gun shots ring out from the gas station across the street. Went down to the ground and saw a car pull off leaving a man shot to death laying by his car that he was pumping gas at.

2) was in New Orleans for a show and was walking with some customers back to their hotel. As we were getting close, my customers said they would see me tomorrow as I went to catch a cab. Went to the curb to grab a cab when out of nowhere I get hit in the back or the head. I'm literally seeing stars when I feel a hand reach into my pocket and pu out my wallet. As I roll over trying to figure out what was going on, I see a guy run away holding a gun. Luckily he used it to hit me and didn't shoot me. Let me tell you how fun it is having a pounding headache for 3 days from that contusion and trying to get on an airplane without a license. The US Government tends to frown upon that...so, that led to trying to get a rental car....where they want a license. Only a police report saved me. Was able to convince TSA to let me on at that point.

So, at this point I stand by my post.

OP, I love Memphis (but don't ignore Chilldog's warning about the crime). New Orleans is a great city and you can get hit on the head anywhere you go honestly (not downplaying Chilldog getting mugged). I personally wouldn't recommend any of the three you asked about. Instead, I would suggest San Diego (to me it's very different from LA). If you're coming during the Winter months then San Diego is definitely a great idea. San Francisco is a crap shoot with the weather because I've been there in January and it was 50 degrees and in May when it was 40 degrees. However, San Fran is a great town! Also I'd recommend Miami. They don't have the very best golf courses that are public but you'll definitely get some good rounds of golf and a GREAT nightlife. A trip to Miami is a normal Winter trip for me and the wife (we live in Atlanta).

I more or less agree with what ChiliDog stated. I live in Nashville. The public golf options here aren't great. Not terrible, but not very good. If you have access to private clubs, the choices improve quite a bit. However, I will differ with him on the entertainment. Like many cities, the strip of honky tonks that he refers to are basically only visited by out of towners. We locals rarely hit the strip of country joints he referenced. There are lots of entertainment and dining options available. Of your three choices you originally listed, I think Nashville is your best bet.

I have lived in Memphis and have spent a lot of time in Nashville and New Orleans. From a music standpoint, Nashville takes the cake. For dining, New Orleans is the best, but Memphis is a great foodie town as well. From a golfing standpoint, TPC Louisiana is a decent track and has some pretty good deals on green fees. If you are looking to play multiple courses, I would stay away form New Orleans. Memphis has great private courses, but they lack a little on the public side. If you are willing to drive 30-45 min, I would recommend staying in Tunica, MS at one of the casinos. There are three courses and the best of the three is Tunica National. All three are very affordable. Another course fairly close to Memphis is Mirimichi. It is owned by Justin Timberlake and the place is first class. While I've spent a lot of time in Nashville, I haven't played a lot of golf there. I know some of the state owned Bear Trace courses are pretty good, and there should be one pretty close to Nashville. If you are primarily focused on golf, I would recommend a Memphis/Tunica trip. You will have quality golf, food, entertainment and culture. New Orleans is the dirtiest, ugliest, smelliest, most beautiful place eon earth. lol I love New Orleans and it would probably be the most fun of the three. That being said, you will be limited on golf accommodations. Nashville is also a great town and you will have the best nightlife scene. I can't speak from experience on the quality of golf. Hope this helps. PM if you have any questions.

I forgot to mention, if you are open to it, go to Branson, MO. Stay at Big Cedar Lodge. It is owned by Bass Pro Shops. There are some great golf courses with breathtaking views. The Champions Tour had an event there this past year and the players loved it. There is a par three course that may be the best par 3 course in the country. Payne Stewart Golf Club may be the best course in the state. Ledgestone and the former Branson Creek (I can't think of the new name) are great as well. The old Branson Creek course is what is owned by Big Cedar and they dumped a ton of money in it. It was named best public course in the state a few years back.

As to the golf, I have to give the edge to Memphis as Memphis CC and Spring Creek Ranch are really solid, especially compared to Nashville and NOLA offerings. Memphis also has a good food and music scene though on somewhat smaller than scale than the other cities. You should be able to soak up most of Memphis in a weekend.

CD, you are off your rocker if you think NYC has less crime than Mempho. You are almost 3 times more likely to get murdered in NYC than Memphis. 333 murdered in NYC last year and 133 in Memphis.

Christmas in Memphis, Nashville, or NOLA will be cold, not sure you will be teeing it up in any of those cities in December.

My suggestion: Monterrey Peninsula
