Mesquite/St George

Recommended Posts

OK, first of all I've done quite a bit of searching, surprisingly, there isn't a whole lot out there.

So, we're off next week for week here, its my first time. Trying to remember some of the courses we're playing.

I know Wolf Creek, Falcon Ridge(?), Oasis Palmer (?), Coral Canyon, Sand Hollow, seems like there is one more I'm forgetting.

So tell me what to expect. What or which ones are great and not so great.

Where should I not miss eating and where is a place to not worry about getting to.

Anything and everything will be more than I know now.

Wolf Creek is the nationally ranked course in Mesquite. Canyon golf on steroids and visually one of the most spectacular and unique courses you can experience. Also in Mesquite is the Oasis course..The Palmer and The Canyons. Scaled down versions of Wolf Creek. The Palmer course is the site of the Big Break Mesquite. Both are good examples of desert/canyon golf. Falcon Ridge is also in Mesquite. Not my favorite or the favorite of my playing partners. Several "goofy" holes. Casablanca and the Palms are the casino courses. Casablanca is a nice desert layout. The Palms is nothing special.

The course you are missing is Conestoga which is a must play in Mesquite.

Sand Hollow and Coral Canyon are near St. George. Sand Hollow is considered by most as the best public course in Utah. The back 9 is something to be experienced. Coral Canyon is a great layout. There is also Sunbrook which is a great 27 hole layout.

Not much to do in Mesquite. There are casino's but it is not Vegas. Mostly retiree's. Not much eye candy.

Hugo's is a great upscale place to eat. Playoffs is a sports bar with good barbecue, etc. There is also a decent Mexican restaurant called Los Lupe's. Cheap and pretty decent food at the cafe in the Casablanca.

Thanks, that is what I was looking for. I've obviously heard much about Wolf Creek and am looking forward to that one.

And I actually think Conestoga is the one I was forgetting.

Wolf Creek is a love it or hate it experience. I have played it at least 1/2 dozen times with probably between 12 to 15 different individuals. It runs about 70/30 in terms of love to hate ratio. Depending on your schedule there is also Coyote Springs which is about an hour south west of Mesquite toward Vegas. It is a Nicklaus course out in the middle of nowhere. Depending on your tastes, it can be worth the drive.

Sand Hollow is in great shape, at least a couple of weeks ago. Coral Canyon is in ok shape, disclaimer, I don't really like Coral Canyon. If you are in St. George and have time to hit up the Ledges it is in great shape, maybe the best shape that the course has ever been in. I know that I am in the minority, but I like Falcon Ridge, depending on the shape of the greens. It's not super long and a bit gimmickie, but you can say the same thing about Wolf Creek, and the Palmer courses. Conestoga is the best course in Mesquite, IMO, so I hope that you are playing there. The Poker room and the Eureka usually gets a lot of play of both limit and no limit, so if you're into that the Eureka is the only game in town. The Steak houses at the Casablance and the Eureka are both quite good. Have fun, and play well.

I've played all of the courses that you have on your list except Falcon Ridge. I think you have a very good line up. Sand Hollow is number one on my list and Wolf Creek #2. As someone posted above, Wolf Creek may be a love it or hate it course, but the vast majoriity of people I know who have played it love it. It looks a lot harder than it really is. I also like Conestoga.

Here are links to photos of the courses. Note that the photos of olf Creek from several different rounds. The ones from last spring show that the greens were severely damaged at that time. They are now back to their normal good condition.

Thanks all. Geez Guia, 44 players, that must be a nightmare to schedule and plan. We have 12 and I can't imagine doing that.

KG, why don't you like Wolf Creek and Falcon Ridge? What makes them a dump?

Sabram, as always, great pics. Looks like that first picture of Sand Hollow is not a good place for my duck hook!

I have played them all, in fact, I just got back from 36 at Sunbrook last weekend. $43 with cart on a weekend! Great shape, no one there.

I rate them, in order of how I would play them if time and cost were equal.: Sand Hollow, Wolf Creek, Conestoga, Coyote Springs, Sunbrook, Sky Mountain, Oasis, Falcon Ridge, Valderra.

Entrada is now private, but I didn't like it much when it was public. Coral Canyon is vastly overrated, over-priced, and over-attituded.

Too bad the fabulous Kokopelli closed. But that's what you get when you build a course in the middle of polyg country that is too high in altitude for snow bird golf. No one comes.

BTW, there is nothing wrong with the Palms; Southgate, St. George Golf club, Green Springs, SunRiver or even little Dixie Red Hills. They're just normal muni's - fun and not too expensive.

And that hole no. 12 is even tougher than it looks. When played from the elevated tee's to the right, it's tough to keep a drive from skipping thru the fairway.

I hate the gimmicky golf courses like that, played great there but do not like it. Falcon Ridge is in terrible condition 85% of the time and wolf creek has lost there greens the past three summers. I played it in "peak" season, early morning and I would compare it to a an average $50 course in vegas condition wise.
If you are decent off the tee with a fairway wood you will have wedges into everything. Much better true golf courses to play.

All great suggestions and with 12 guys you need to just have fun and not be course snobs.

We go with a group of 32 to 36 and I have been a part of this for the past 6 years. We stay in Mesquite and of course make the trip up to St. George every year.

We mainly play Sand Hollow every year, but they seem to be punching the greens now about the time we go down there (first week in a June) so it's been removed from the rotation. A mistake in my book even on punched greens. Wolf Creek is always a given also. I personally would take it out every third year as it's a test for players that cannot move it 230 yards plus off the tee down hill which about 1/3 of our group cannot do with any regularity.

We use to play Coyote Springs on the way back to the airport, but high winds and no clubhouse has put an end to that stop. Very nice layout and it would be fun if the wind was about 15 mph less then we normally see it. Just no fun when it's 25 plus everytime we go there.

The rest are sorta lumped together that we play....some better, some just basic muni's and not one that I would tell the organizer to bag that course. You are never going to have 36 guys love every course we play on this trip which is 5 rounds, so for me I take it for what it is....a golf trip with friends, who compete and like having FUN!

Fair enough reasoning KG. Makes sense. But I definitely want to play it once, have read so much about it.

It looks like Coral Canyon is the course that is a maybe. Possibly play it Saturday morning before our 800 mile drive home.

Coyote Springs is on the play list instead of Coral Canyon.

Not sure he's still talking about Wolf Creek here. I've never found FR to be any different from any of the other Mesquite Courses condition wise. Peak season is starting now. Anything approaching summer is so hellishly hot you melt. Are there even any $50 courses in Vegas? I'll have to check my GolfNow special deals, but I don't think I've ever found one under $50. And lastly, WC from the back two sets of tees is very, very long. A fairway wood won't get you over many of their 240 yard forced carries, let alone put you in wedge distance. From the ladies tees, sure, but for normal golfers looking for an average experience, no.

I asked one of the guys and he said they usually play one set up from the tips. I'm sure it be plenty long enough.

I looked at the Sand Hollow scorecard and that hole 12 that was pictured was still like 430 from that set of tees.

And it plays uphill. Much more so than it appears in the pictures once you're in the fairway. Hole is a beast but a great design.

Just my .02 on Wolf Creek, I can understand KG's point. It has been hit hard the last few years by floods during monsoon season so some of the greens were nearly washed away.

However, it is a fabulous layout and is a fun test as you deal with elevation changes that will make your head spin. Some think it is goofy golf and hate it plus throw in that it's a 5-hour round so it will get mixed reviews. Personally, I think everyone who is able should play it at least once.

Its been a long time since I've played anywhere where the pace was slow. That may be as big a challenge as anything, staying patient.

6200 and 6900 is very, very long? I played WC from the back tees the time I played there and hit a good amount of 5 woods. Most of those carries (230-240) are from the back tee which a normal golfer shouldnt be playing anyways. From the 6200 tees it will be a lot of wedges or youre playing the wrong tee box.

And what golfinnova said. 5.5 round is very common. People playing wrong tee box, losing balls, taking pictures and logistics of the course.

I agree... I've only played WC a handful of times during the summer and it's not really long, especially in 100+ degree weather. The par 3s fake a good amount of the distance on the card (except for 15).

Still a great course though. Not anywhere in near my top 20 or anything, but lots of fun to play (especially with a large group).

We played WC today (35 holes actually). I can say that I'm glad I played it, but I won't be In a huge hurry to go back. Not that it's bad or anything, but it's so severe. And while I didn't really find it gimmicky, I could see where KG could get that opinion, but I certainly didn't fing it easy( anyone who hits wedge into #10 needs to be up at the long drive facility) It definitely has some spectacular holes and views. But for the money, I think I liked Falcon Ridge more.

oh well, off to Sand Hollow tomorrow.

You're right. 6900 yards, 75.4 rating and a slope of 154 is a patty cake putt-putt course. All you 10 cappers feel free to play from the tips, you'll have no trouble at all.

+2 handicap. Shot 71 from the back tees with two balls in the hazard. Actually play the course and make your opinion, I made mine.

edit... Its sole defense is the tee box. I am great off the tee so to me its very easy.

We had a terrific trip. I guess I'm not an overly picky or discriminating person (I liked my burger at Red Robin better than my ribeye at the restaraunt in the Casablanca), I liked all seven courses we played. I didn't find anything wrong with conditions on any of them other than the shaggy fairways at Casa Blanca (which really surprised me as they just played the Nevada Open there the three days prior).

It's really, really hard to beats the greens at Coral Canyon and Sand Hollow, they just roll so pure. And such great views. I am pleased to report I managed to NOT hit my ball over the cliff on #12 at Sand Hollow.

Casa Blanca really gave me the feel of the old phoenix courses I used to play, almost a nostalgic feeling. Although I can certainly make do without the Bermuda, I had forgotten how the ball just disappears.

Falcon Ridge, I can actually remember several of the holes, and it was the first one we played. I just liked that course.

Coyote Springs was probably my favorite. I really liked the options a lot of the holes presented. An aggressive line off the tee was rewarded with a really good look at the pin, or take the safe play off the tee and have work to do to get the ball close. Greens are definitely a challenge.

Oddly enough, the two at the bottom of my list would,be Wolf Creek and Conestoga. We just got the vibe at Conestoga that we really weren't welcome there, tolerated at best. I struggled there with the bunkers, no sand and I struggled to be able to get the club down and through.
Wolf Creek just seemed so severe. Anyone shooting under par there from the tips has my admiration.

My order to play next year (and green fee is a factor) would be: Coyote Springs, Coral Canyon, Sand Hollow, Casa Blanca, falcon Ridge, WC, and Conestoga

But I wouldn't turn any of them down. Especially with the 75-80 degree weather. Our car recorded temps down to 21 below on our drive home.
