Highlands/Cashiers, NC

Going to my brother's wedding up in Highlands/Cashiers next week and will have time to get in a round or two. What are my best bets this late in the year? I think the place we're staying is in Mountaintop, but not sure that would allow me to play there. Anyone know their policy? I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but its there any way to even try to get on at Wade Hampton? Any and all help is appreciated.

I would imagine everything in Cashiers is shut down for the season. All the private clubs in my area (Boone, Linville , Banner Elk) closed the last week of October.

Most privates there shut down on 10/31... If you can slum it at a non-private... Try...

Sapphire National or Sky Valley... If you are desperate for better golf, book a night at Old Edwards Inn... Then you could play their course (the old Highlands Cove course)...

How far are you willing to drive? Try Mimosa Hills.

Mimosa Hills and Catawba Country Club are great tracks.

No where near Highlands/Cashiers. And I would never play either of those two over Rock Barn Jones if you were going to be in the Hickory/Morganton area.

I'm the opposite. You can keep Rock Barn as I'm not a fan. Of course I tend not to be crazy about Jones design's. I prefer Ross and Fazio courses over Jones.

I don't get the Catawba Country Club love even if you don't like Rock Barn. It may be the most boring course in the area. 14 of the holes are just straight holes, all of the par 5s are just medium to long par 4s and they have just 2 ridiculous holes in numbers 5 and 14. Outside of the last 2 holes on the course, if you can't rain birdies on that course, you never will.

In full disclosure I'm a member at Mimosa and have only played Catawba CC once. I've played RB Jones 3 or 4 times.

I heard this rumor over the weekend. Have you heard that Catawba CC is going to redo 3 holes per year for 6 years? A 15 hole golf course for 6 years. Doesn't seem smart to me (if true).

If true, that's a really bad idea. Hickory is in bad shape right now and it looks to only be getting worse if Corning decides to relocate. I belong to Lake Hickory Country Club and am about to ditch my membership due to not using it enough. I think the country club way of life is going to go away in Hickory and any club that is looking at dumping a lot of money into itself is crazy to me right now. Tough times are coming and I think only 1-2 clubs will survive.
