Looking for Cheap, Warm in winter, WestCoast golf trip

Recommended Posts

I think the title says it all. We usually go to Bandon Dunes for a few day in Febuary (is it ever a great deal then). But this year we no going and lokking for a fast 4 day trip somewhere warm. We will be flying out of Vancouver, CAN.

Some suggesions would be great.

If you want cheap I would go to inland empire in southern california. Cheap golf. Good golf.

But the usual palm springs and phoenix recommendations. I just went to palm springs for 2 days and stayed at a 4 star hotel monday night for just over $100. Golfed at the pga west stadium course for 45 per person monday. And shadow ridge for 47 tuesday.

Was it on course accomidations or did you have to rent a car? We love staying on course as it makes haveing a few drinks after the round much easier.

I live just over 2 hours away so I drove there. But I'm sure there are a ton of places where you can rent a car for low cost. There are a few resorts you could stay at with courses on site and courses very close. Great example in Palm springs would be Shadow Ridge. Just around the corner(maybe a mile away) are the Desert Willow courses and maybe 3-4 more miles opens up the Classic course. a couple more miles away from that gives you the 2 courses at Indian Wells.

But all said and done this could get expensive quick. Inland Empire that i recomended would need a rental car, but with 10-25 minute trips every day you would have access to a ton of great courses under $50 per round if you shop around.

To save a few bucks, I stayed at a local hotel. I was playing 2 rounds a day for 3 days, and the courses were spread throughout the area. I figured there was no point in paying for a resort that I wasn't going to use. Of course, if you plan on hanging around after the round for more than a few drinks, then a resort makes much more sense.

Let me put in a vote for Mesquite/St.George. Plenty of casino hotels that are serviceable, if not posh. All are cheap. 20 public courses to choose from, but its not like you can walk to them. Don't see what the objection to a rental car is because its the LEAST expensive component of your trip. You'll spend more on drinks than the rental car. On the whole, a shade less expensive than Palm Springs. $45 on weekends isn't uncommon.

Isn't the weather in Mesquite a bit cool in February? Palm Springs is going to have average highs in the mid-70's, whereas Mesquite will be lucky to reach 60 degrees.

Cool? Heck no. It only goes down from 110 in the summer to pleasant in the winter. Right now it's snowing here in central Utah and sunny and 66 in Mesquite. Their rates go up in winter, just like in Florida, to catch the snowbirds. This is their busy season.

The OP is going in February, and temps will be much lower than November.

It not the money for the rental car, it is being able to drive it. It is really nice beer or not

I notice the word "cheap" in the OPs question. Shadow Ridge, Indian Wells and especially Desert Willow does not really fall into the cheap category.

not easy finding warm weather+ cheap golf in February on the West Coast, but....

Los Angeles: Rustic Canyon may fit with your group, since you clearly like Bandon. Rustic is about an hour's drive northwest of LAX), is inexpensive (about $70 weekends) and walkable. Generally plays firm & fast. (Haven't played Tierra Rejada or Lost Canyons, but they are not expensive; drought may affect conditions.)

San Clemente: about 1 hr drive south of LAX, San Clemente Municipal ($50 weekends) has a flat front nine, but the remaining holes are interesting & hilly. (Haven't played Talega ($90 weekends Golfnow) or Shorecliffs ($47 weekends) but they are in the area.

Weather is your call. I play all winter long down there, no complaints. And I can assure you it is warmer and sunnier than Bandon 12 months out of 12.

However, no cheap or easy beer in St. George. Mormon liquor laws. Gotta go to Nevada for that,
[/quote]

On the other hand, I just learned in my UGA magazine that it is possible to stay on resort in luxury casita style lodgings at both Sand Hollow and the private Entrada. If you rent at Entrada they give you a temporary membership to play at the course and this might be more in keeping with your drinkin-not-driving post round plans.

These casitas and the cc restaurant are very nice, which is something that is hard to find in Mesquite. Plenty of casino hotel rooms there, none of which I'd say are upscale.
