Hogan - transition and move with wrists

Recommended Posts

Curious if you can explain what Hogan may do during his transition move with his wrists to eliminate the left cup. Is there a deliberate cup right wrist which causes left wrist to bow with a slight turn of the left knuckles down. I can only see this happening at the slowest part of the swing during transition and not on the down swing where it is too fast to get the wrist positions at impact.

Curious other thoughts on who studied this. When I have similar backswing with slight cupped left wrist at top it requires this type of move to square the face otherwise its slightly open.

Here's a guess.
As per my brilliant new observation in other thread, if the hands are moving more horizontally simply the weight of the clubhead causes it to fall down and goodbye cup. Test this by standing tall and doing a horizontal swing motion. if you have nice loose/soft wrists it happens naturally, you can prevent it by holding hard and freezing your wrists. In his slow motion demo, he seems to maintain the cup until quite late in the downswing, to where the shaft is horizontal, this of course is the point where weight and gravity would cause the clubhead to fall.
If your hands path is more vertical it does not happen naturally, in fact the club head wants to go even more outside the hands.
The idea that he did it consciously/deliberately i think is nonsense, i think its simply impossible to do at full swing speed.
Compare Hogan, Snead and the old Rickie Fowler. Hands Path Plane Angle makes a huge difference to what the club wants to do.
Sergio, with his steep hands plane, solved the problem by, as he says, getting his hands down first, with almost no shoulder or hip rotation until very late, the old "ring the bell" trick for steep swingers.

Very interesting.

If its a challenge for me to do this move to properly square the face at impact then if I prevent the slight cup in the first place at the top and keep left wrist square or actually slightly bowed is that ok? Logically it seems that if the wrist is square or slightly bowed going to the top then its already set so no wrist action is required coming down to square the face? I believe the slight cup at top is coming from the slight strong grip at address. If I square the wrist at top or slight bow then it closes the face.

Thoughts?
