Patrick Gibbons Handmade Shoe Review

Recommended Posts

I have not seen these shoes reviewed on here before so thought I would do a write up on them.

I have 4 different Patrick Gibbons belts and for a while I have been eyeballing a pair of his shoes. I needed a nice pair of black shoes to wear in the the fall/winter here in AZ. I was not impressed by many of the modern shoes as none of them really had the quality look that went with the price tag. Thankfully for Christmas I got my first pair of Patrick Gibbons Handmade shoes, Black kangaroo leather with black lizard.

The Details

Fit: The Gibbons run pretty true to FJ sizing, I wear 11 in both the Icons as well as the Gibbons, if anything the Gibbons are just a hair bigger than the FJ.

Break in: In the ultimate test I wore them day 1 and walked 18 holes on a cold AZ morning 39* at tee off. I did opt to go with some padded merino wool socks figuring there would be some break in pains, but I was pleasantly surprised they did very well for a full leather shoe, however they will probably take 2 rounds walking for a full break in. I talked to Gibbons about break in suggestions and one of the things he mentioned is he switched from the calf leather to the kangaroo for a quicker break in and better water resistance.

Comfort: For a 100% leather shoe they are very comfortable even more so than the Icons. The shoe just seems to wrap my foot perfectly and allow just the right amount of space.

Looks: What can I say they are just stunning on first look, but when you look closer at the craftsmanship in the leather work and stitching they become a thing of beauty.

Verdict, If you are like me and miss the classic looking golf shoe and want something that is made with the highest quality and attention to detail do yourself a favor and check out Patrick Gibbons. You might even be surprised by the price. Not all that much more than the Classics were and if you keep your eyes peeled he does run some specials.

Full disclosure I do play golf with Gibbons from time to time but everything I have was purchased and only discounts were his advertised promos. This was not a hookup for him in return for goods etc. I am just blown away by the quality of his work.

What size nike shoes do you wear? I ware a 12 nike tennis shoe but when I went to try on the FJ DNA's seemed like a 10.5 fit best. I know gibbons only has an 11 or a 12 so I was thinking about going with an 11? I must say those are some beautiful looking shoes!

I have had mine for over a year and love them. What I did to break mine in was fill the tub up ankle deep with hot water(hot as you can stand). Put the shoes on bare footed and tie them as tight as you can and then soak them a couple minutes and then wear them for a little while.

I honestly dont know. I do not own any Nike shoes golf or street. Golf shoe wise it is Adidas Tour 360 LTD FJ Icons and True PHX for summer. My Adidas 360 LTD are small at 10.5 Trues are 11 if that helps

Wow those look amazing. Ive been an icon guy forever but the pg's are on my radar.

Just curious how that leather sole holds up to wetness and moisture. I remember the fj classics had a leather sole and would soak up moisture and become super heavy.

Great review opb
[/quote]

Thanks we played on a frosty morning but it was dormant bermuda so really not a ton of moisture. It seemed to have zero impact on the soles when I cleaned them post round. If you get a pair I would go for the kangaroo as it is a bit more moisture resistant than the original calf skin ones.

Gibbons stuff is awesome. I've yet to see anything he has done that isn't top notch. Have a friend who is sponsored by him and he brought his staff bag by the shop one day. Amazing is all I can say

Totally ever single piece i have purchased from him has been amazing quality. It was really cool talking to him about his product and the quality that goes in behind it.

I thought they'd be a tad more expensive... $189 starting point isn't bad for USA hand made gear seeing as the OEM's are charging that and more for (insert country of your choice) sweatshop made. Plus, if you sign up for their email list you get 10% off your order. So you can get a pair of nice shoes for less than a pair of FJ or TW's or even ECCO's. If I can get back into my 36's without looking like the Michelin Man, those white and orange ones are mine... in the meantime I think I am gonna order the black ones...

Also.. are those the kangaroo leather shoes or the regular? They look great. Any more rounds in them? Are they getting more comfortable?

Kangaroo. No more rounds in them I caught a nasty cold last week and skipped golf over the the weekend. Will post updates

He dropped the prices significantly this year. I believe the were originally $500 plus but the new price point brings them into range for a lot more guys as you said not too much more than other high end shoes.

Wow. Makes sense then.

If thats the case then I better order better order before they go back up.

I dont know why the change in price but I think it will stay where it is, much more accessible to more people at the current price point. He actually improved with the kangaroo leather over the calfskin.

I think he may have dropped the prices a tad on the belts as well. I am in the market for a new one since mine is like separating from the fake croc (PGA belt not PG). Waiting for someone to return theirs and it to go on the sale tab.
