Anyone ever play there in the off-season? Is it even browner than when they had the US Open?
Last winter they painted the fairways so I assume they are doing the same this year. My question is the greens as I'm not sure how the bermuda will be during the winter months.

They are painted/pigmented/whatever you want to call it (they make it green). If you don't like this technique but like over seeding I hope you ask yourself why.

As far as the Bermuda last year #1 and Thistle Dhu (both Bermuda greens) played well. Can't say anything about this year as I haven't been able to visit.

 • 2 weeks later...

I played #1 today after a 1-hour frost delay and the greens were in pretty good shape (better than the greens on #5 yesterday).

The fairways on both were dormant brown and muddy (kind of like hitting off of packed bare ground).

From what I could see of #2 it's fairways were green however they are doing it.

I took this picture from the from the walkway near the clubhouse looking down the first hole of #2 this morning.

Question for anyone that has played there....

I know caddies can be part of making the experience, but does anyone know if they are required on #2? I am about to send an email to them but just wondered if anyone here already knew the answer.

I thought they were required on #2, however from their website:

"Should I take a cart or caddie?
We believe that caddies and forecaddies have the greatest impact on the golf experience. They help you with shot selection, read greens, provide local knowledge and lore, rake bunkers, clean golf balls, and generally make sure your Pinehurst golf experience is one you won’t forget. We highly encourage guests to utilize a caddie on Pinehurst No. 2. Many golfers enjoy forecaddies on other Pinehurst courses, allowing them to ride in a cart still enjoying the normal caddie services."

Me too, but I saw the FAQ as well, and it leaned towards it being an option so I wasn't sure.

Caddies are not required, but do yourself a favor and get one. You cannot walk without a caddie (unless you're a member) Carts are always on the path, and there are some really long walks between where the paths are and where your ball can end up. As far as caddie costs, its pretty cheap and if you get a good looper it makes playing #2 even more fun. I'd never played with a caddie when I played #2 two summers ago and it was absolutely worth the fee + tip (about $75).

$252 is a really good price for what you're getting, just remember that (like many places) the fees and tips add up quickly.

I'll be playing #2 the first week of March. I have a question regarding the caddies. One of those friend of a friend statements and I'm trying to find out if it's the truth or BS. My buddy was told that the caddies use Pinehurst bags. Basically they take your clubs out and put them in their bags for the loop. I guess for uniformity or something. Any truth in that for those that have used caddies there.? I've never heard of anything like that.

Yea- if your friend brings a Tour Staff bag, they will switch them to a walking bag, this is standard for any property with caddie services. If he has his own stand/walking bag, they do not switch.

Thanks JW, so from what you're saying that would go for a standard cart bag as well. I'll be flying over for a week, playing a number of courses and my cart bag offers more protection when dealing with baggage handlers. Also, with the changeable weather that time of year was I thinking about using my cart bag so I could pack more stuff but maybe now I'll just use my carry bag. Thanks.

The caddies often carry twobagsat once, so they switch to their bags for ease--get there early enoughtot switch out! I carry a Ping Hoofer and they switched it out.

I played in a 4 some, and one guy doubled and they did not switch the bags out. I have a Hoofer as well, I took a single bag caddie.

I am going to book this deal, but am keeping an eye on the 10 day forecast before I do. I am sure a High 50's day will pop up.
