Adams Tour FW Review

Recommended Posts

2080, 4060 & 5050
IMO Adams makes the most underrated Tour woods on the market. People are starting to figure this out but for the most part people still overlook them. I have played the 2080 and 5050 extensivly and just got my 4060 so I decided to write a review of all 3.

Looks: All 3 of these clubs have an excellent traditional pear type shape. They all have their own shape they do not look exactly alike. The 2080 looks slightly longer from heel to toe and shorter from front to back than the other 2. The 4060 is the same size as and looks alot like the 2080 but it looks a bit shorter from heel to toe and is the most pear shaped. The 5050 is slightly larger than the other 2, a little bit shorter from heel to toe and a little bit more round and less pear shaped. The main difference between the 3 is the face depth. The 2080 has a pretty standard face depth in Sonartec terms just a hair deeper than an SS02. The 4060 has a deeper face just a hair deeper than an SS03. The 5050 has a very deep face deeper than any other FW I have found. All 3 clubs are not oversized at all nor are they tiny, they are a nice intermediate size and are all nicely accented by an all black head with no alignment aid. Both the 2080 and 4060 have a contoured sole with about an inch strip in the center that is raised slightly. The 5050 has a flatter sole with no countour. My 2080 has Ovation stamped on the sole while both the 4060 and 5050 have Redline RPM stamped on the sole. I know that there are also Ovation stamped 4060s but I have never seen an Ovation stamped 5050. From what I have heard Adams is dropping the Ovation line so all of the FWs you see from here on out should say Redline on the bottom. One last thing worth noteing, the 2080 and 4060 have a toe that angles out from the crown to the sole like your typical Adams fairway wood instead of angleing in like most traditional clubs. The 5050's toe angles in. All in all I like the looks of the 4060 best I specifically like the fact that its a little shorter from heel to toe and the slightly more extreme pear shape. They all look GREAT though

Feel: All 3 of these clubs have a very solid feel and a great sound. The 2080 and 4060 are just slightly more muted than the 5050 which just gives you a little bit more of an impression of being metallic. Feedback is excellent you can definetly feel where on the face you are hitting the ball and shots on the sweetspot feel like you have killed it. These clubs to me feel how a modern metal wood should feel. They have hints of the old traditional muted solid feel while still retaining some of that "I killed it" feeling. (I have given up my dream of a metal wood that feels like persimmon it obviously isnt going to happen) I think anyone out there will be very happy with the feel of these clubs.

Performance: While they all look alot alike each of these clubs has their own performance traits so I have broken this section down into 3 seperate parts.

2080: This is a very easy club to use. It gets the ball up in the air nicely but does not balloon. I hit this club (13*) on about the same trajectory as the 14.5* 4060. It is workable in both directions but it seems to like to go high and straight mostly. (which is not a bad thing) Distance is above average I hit this on the long side for a 3 wood and it has the ability to land soft on a green. It is also above average in the forgiveness department it seems especially forgiving on toe side misses. It is least forgiving on mishits high on the face. I also have a 18* 2080 that I love it would be in the bag but I hit it too far for the distance I need. ( long par 3s at my home course) All in all this is an excellent club that does everything very well. This is the best club for anyone who doesnt prefer a 3 wood with an especially deep face and doesnt hit the ball especially high.

4060: I have had this club only for a few days but I have taken it out on the course once where I had the course all to myself and was able to hit many extra shots with it in addition to some serious range time. This club reminds me more of a deeper faced 2080 than the 5050. It is also an excellent overall performer. Compared to the 2080 it hits the ball on a lower trajectory (see above) I find it to be about comparable with the 2080 in terms of forgiveness. It is a little more forgiving than the 2080 on high face hits and a little less forgiving on toe misses. In the same loft I would guess it is a little longer than the 2080 I hit the 14.5* compared to the 13* 2080 about the same distance off the deck and maybe a little further off the tee. (this is with the same shaft and setup) I find that for myself I hit it better from the rough than the 2080 but I am a little steep with my fairway woods and I always tend to hit deeper face 3 woods better especially from the rough. I find that I can work it when I need to but it likes to go straight also. Overall this is my favorite of the 3 so far but as I said I have always liked a deeper faced 3 wood. I like the looks of this one the best also it has the right face depth and I love the shape. Currently in the bag knocking the 2080 and another rotating 3 wood out of the bag.

5050: This one is deeper and slightly bigger than the other 2. It also has the lowest trajectory (13*) I found that it is pretty much like a mini driver off the tee. It is monsterously long off the tee especially I hit some tee shots with this thing that were up there with descent drives I had hit on the holes in previous rounds. I had a harder time hitting this one off the deck it is not as forgiving as the other 2 but when you catch it right it hits the ball a long way. I hit mostly straight shots and fades with it off the tee you have to work a little harder to hit a draw with it. Overall I think I would like this club alot better in a 15* than a 13*. I thought I was going to love this club based on my results with the 2080 but it was a bit too much for me. Anyone with a high swingspeed (I am only at 105mph these days with the driver) or anyone that hits the ball really high will love this club. I sold it to one of the guys that I work with who swings over 115 mph and hits the ball sky high and he absolutely LOVES it.

Overall: Adams clearly has a winner on all 3 fronts here. These clubs look great and perform even better. Like everything else in golf equipment the key is finding the one that is right for you and your game.

If anyone has any specific questions Id be happy to answer them for you.

Excellent review.  I have not hit any of these woods but just decided to pick up a 4060 based on all of the rave reviews.

Let us know how it works out for you. I am betting you will feel the same way as most everyone who hits these.
