stack and tilt for a young player?

Recommended Posts

#2 son is 11 and has a decent swing but it flattens out at the bottom and often creates miss hits as well as lost power. He will be joining First Tee as soon as an opening develops and may play some Prestige Tour events in the mean time.

He has a traditional instructor now who is great, but perhaps may be a bit conservative due to his (mostly) elderly clientele.

Would you recommend pursuing the S&T direction with a younger boy?

Thank you for your thoughts. Ill try to get a video later.

I would not, even though it prove to be more consistent for some amateurs, the swing is made for someone who is short and has a beer gut. So unless your son has been pounding brews I would not recommend it. Out of the taller players that I know who have tried it none of them have really had any success with it. If you look at Plummer, and Bennett neither one of them is that tall. And the only tall player who has ever used the swing is Aaron Baddley who has not had very much success since switching to it. So until your son grows into his body I would just let him swing with normal mechanics. And it is natural for someone who is young or shorter to have their swing flatten out at the bottom. If you think about it takes a lot more strength, and consistency to come very steep into the ball then it does flatt. Although I understand you want your son to be able to get his swing leveled out I would not fret over it at such a young age.

Thank you.
Have to go inventory my beer fridge.. :) His nick name is "Stretch" so I guess that doesn't apply.. LOL
I did not know about the stature perimeters, I only observed the teaching of a steep, left sided swing.
Thanks again, Ill just let him beat a few thousand more balls and see what develops.

I mean I would try talking to a pro, but that is my advice. I taught for a couple of first tee's believe it or not, but I am no pro just an amateur player. But I have seen a couple of my buddies who are tall try and switch to this swing and it has not worked for them. Along with that I have tried a couple of times to switch to it, for a little and i just hit spinny shots without much control. I am 6'2 by the way, if your son is tall he will figure out how to rip it at some point I promise. I know three guys who went to Cambell and learned stack and tilt from Andy and Mike, and they have had to tinker with it some, but they're all about 5'9 190 pounds. Best of luck with your son, I'm sure he'll be fine just make sure he is having fun that is all that matters!

First off I am going to say I not in a position and I don’t think anyone here is in position to really give solid advice especially because there isn’t a video.

The very fact your asking about stack and tilt tells me it might be time to look for a new approach with either your coach or a new one.

golf instructors are like gymnastics teacher you need one that fits your style of swing. There as unique as a persons swing is. The other thing is everyone thinks there current instructor is very good (even when they may not have clue). So don’t ask for advice from people they are usually wrong

i have found once I begin to question advice from an instructor it usually means it time to move on. Generally speaking a good instructor will have you improving so much every time you see them your not asking for advice.

your paying good money to get this advice and frankly a lot instructors are not a good fit. Take some time and find a new guy and see if they give your results.
