After you dropped your membership you...

I am considering dropping my membership. I love the club but I am thinking of dropping for financial reasons. When I think of playing golf after dropping my membership all I can think of is "why bother?"

I know people drop all the time. I am just afraid I will be so bitter I will quit the game.

Curious if I am unique that way.

I dropped my membership about 4- 5 years ago and actually still live on hole #9. It is a semi-private club that was more concerned with outside play and holding outside tournaments than trying to keep it's members happy. I got fed up with not being able to play when I wanted due to these reasons. Also, when the economy went south, they began allowing people to join with no initiation fee while the current members had paid 10k to 12k. I am pretty stubborn and just walked away. I am still bitter, but have not given up this great game that I love. What I miss the most is playing in the Men's money games and the connivence of walking out my door onto the course. Thankfully, we have a lot of other courses that appreciate me and my money. Don't give up the game !!!!

After I dropped my membership (due to moving to another state), I slowly lost interest in playing

The decline was result of too many 5+ hour rounds at public courses, being treated like a number by a starter, and lack of consistency in course conditions

I did not realize how spoiled I was being able to walk a consistently, manicured course in 4 hours or less

I'd highly recommend keeping your membership if you can do so

See if your state golf association offers tournaments and play discounts. Here in Vermont, we have a big roster of 1-day tournaments around the state for $40 and up. As long as you hold a valid GHIN Handicap, you are entitled to play. For not too much money, you get to play a wide variety of courses throughout the state. Check us out: www.vtga.org

I dropped my membership about 5 years ago just after my now 6 year old was born due to as much traveling as I do for work not having any time to play. I'm unique in that I play a lot of company expensed golf at top tier courses around the world so I keep my game in decent shape. When I come home, the kids and I (6, 4 and 1 year old) will go out at dusk and I'll putt and chip with my 6 year old while my 4 and 22 month old love to rake the bunkers and fix ball marks. I'll even take my blower out there when my 6 year old doesn't want to play and let him walk around blowing off the green and the surrounding areas. My Pro usually rides around and will come have a putting competition of chipping competition on the weekends with me to kill time. He knows we're coming back when my son gets to 8 or 9 years old and I'll have him start some lessons with him and play some with me. My 4 year old will probably want to drive the cart.

If you have a family, I think a membership is important as I truly believe being a good golfer will help you in your career almost as much as being good at your job. Plus, toting my kids around to golf tournaments and watching them play sounds so much more enjoyable than watching them play baseball or swimming or something. In golf, I get to practice with them as a family. It's also something we can all do together when we get older. My dream is for all of my kids to play golf but if none of them do, I can live with that as well.

If by membership you mean country club I cannot comment, but I have purchased a few different season passes at a few different courses the past few years. The past two years I did not, however I found that I started to enjoy golfing more as I tended to reconnect with some old friends, travel and play some new courses instead of playing the same course with the same guys. I guess quality over quantity.
