Been using my travel bag without a stiff arm forever, no problems. Does the stiff arm just give a false impression of safety?

btw, just because your stiff arms bends, breaks, plastic piece shatters... doesn't mean ur clubs would've broke.

I use one. I started using one after I had an airline bend 2 of my woods. When you see how the baggage handlers throw the bags around, you would not want to take the risk.

I move my clubs around to have the woods in the middle in order to be as close to, and under, the plastic top as possible. I imagine bad things can still happen but at least the risk is reduced with this. (Touch wood) I have not had an issue since I started using mine. Cause and effect or coincidence? Who knows. All I know is that I have not had any damaged clubs since I started using it.

I forget how much it costs but I have had mine for 7-8 years, so it is not like it is something you have to keep buying.

I have always used one. Also put Club Glove Headcovers on my irons during travel. The stiff-arm concept makes sense to me and they are cheap. Seems like a no-brainer to me!

I use one and have never had a problem. Even when you travel bag looks to have had a rough flight. I do not use iron headcovers but I asked a local shop the neoprene cheap iron covers that oems use for shipping and they gave them toe for free. I use those on irons and wedges when traveling as well pretty sure I paid $25 for the stiff arm so well worth it.

Prior to last year, I did not have a driver whose head was easily removable. Now that I do, I will put the club head in my suitcase as you said. Great idea! Thanks! Especially since the last time I traveled with my clubs, they damaged my club head. I would never prove it was them but I know it was. Hence, I am currently shopping for a new driver!

No, NOT using one and getting away with it gives a false sense of security.

btw, just because your stiff arms bends, breaks, plastic piece shatters... doesn't mean ur clubs would've broke.

Seems pretty obvious that you don't want to "rock" one -- so don't. It's your gear.

I never had a problem using that method either.......until one day I did have a problem.

It only takes once. As I have now had that "once", I now also have a stiff arm.

I am on my second one, the first one got bent after doing its job and protecting my clubs! I travel a lot and would not think about packing my clubs without it.

I bought one and always use it. All it needs to do is protect one shaft from breaking to pay for itself.

I made my own out of three pulled graphite shafts taped together (two going one way one going the other with grips on each end).

The double end has an old fairway head cover over it for the top, the single grip slides into the middle divider of my cart bag.

A have a friend that made his out of a cut-off hockey stick and a tennis ball.

Go to the hardware store and buy a broom handle that is 48". I spent $9 on one and it has served me well on the flights my clubs have made.

I also take the heads off of my adjustable clubs (driver and fairway) and stick the heads in my bag with just the shafts in the golf bag. Works great never had any issues

Go to the hardware store and buy a wooden dowel rod for $2 to $4 and have it cut to whatever length you need for your travel bag. Get 1/2" or bigger. Wrap a towel on the end of the dowel if its too short.

I always use one and the only problem I have had is when TSA unscrewed the top of the stiff arm and left it in the bottom of my Club Glove Last Bag. The shaft of the stiff arm was still in my golf bag. Luckily my clubs were not damaged.

With an SKB hard case I've never needed a stiff arm, towels, jackets or anything else wrapped around my clubs. Nothing bent, broken or taken apart. Just a TSA notice when they arrive just as I packed them.

I have a club glider journey. I first used a CG Stiff arm. Got home from a trip and found it bent to the point it wouldn't adjust its length (so I guess it did its job). I replaced it with the Bagboy version. Different cross section than the round stiff arm.

Use one in my Club Glove Burstproof 2, yet to have damage to my clubs. The airlines will always figure out some devious way to destroy your clubs, but this has worked well for me.

Whenever I check my bag at the airport I use a stiff arm. As others have said, before I got a stiff arm I used an old stairwell hand rail - worked great.

Where the stiff arm (or similar) shines is when a disgruntled baggage handler throws your clubs in/out of the plane and the bag lands nose first, preventing your driver from taking on the appearance of a Hi-Bore or worse. Also, being the longest thing in your bag, it will (potentially) take some lateral force when the bag is bent. I always use a towel as well to padd things.

DaRiz, dunno if the Orange Whip is sturdy enough.

I use the bagboy version, but I modified mine. I drilled through mine and inserted cotter pins so it wouldn't collapse.
  • Argonne69Argonne69 Members Posts: 20,025 ✭✭
    Yup.

I was standing near the airport gate one day waiting to board the plane, and I gazed out the window. The baggage handlers were unloading the baggage from the recent arrival. In shock, I saw them dump a soft case golf bag out of the plane's baggage door, and it fell to the tarmac below, landing right on the nose of the case. If the bag didn't have a stiff arm, I'm absolutely certain the driver head would have snapped, as the bag fell a good 8 to 10 feet.
