don't need to these days. take the heads off and carry those in my carry on. International though I'll wrap them up good and put in my checked golf bag. They take a literal interpretation of some airline rules of 'no golf clubs' allowed on the plane. Get stopped often by tsa, but worth the hassle.

I made my own. 1.25" dowel rod with a trash can attached to the top of it. Costs about $10.

I just got to Phoenix for a golf trip and it definitely took a good hit because the trash can part was broken.

One of the other guys bag got caught in a conveyor. Ripped the travel bag and regular bag. Snapped the 3 wood shaft also. He got $550 out of it but still a hassle.

Absolutely 100% use, plus I put as many towels inside wrapped around the shafts as I can. To be even more anal and safe, I remove the driver and 3w heads and place those in towels and then stuff inside the bag's pockets. My dad used to work at the local airport as a mail guy and would see the way stuff was handled.

I always use one. I also take the heads off my woods and put them in a sock and then my carry on.

I use pipe insulation for my wood shafts and snake a towel around my iron heads so they dont rattle.
  • Ghost_556Ghost_556 Members Posts: 115
Based on the suggestions in this thread, I made one out of PVC pipes for my club glove bag. Two legs and a crossbar at the top. I also did the towels around the clubs, tying them under the PVC crossbar in the middle of the bag.

I once brought the head of my driver in my carry on....don’t do this. I learned that you are apparently not allowed to bring it in your bag as a carry on. I’m not exactly clear why though. I suppose the x ray TSA agents don’t know what it is, even though you can explain it to them.

Never leave home without it. Although its a home made (better, in my opinion) stiff arm consisting of a broomstick cross with tennis balls on each end.

Any unscrupulous golfing TSA agents who know valuable shafts could make a killing. A lot of shafts with no heads in the bags. A couple of those would probably fit down a pant leg. From the some of the stuff I've heard or read, I would put nothing past some of them.

A separate club head in a side pocket would be even easier to swipe.

Just stiff arm and towels for me. Woods grouped in the middle under the stiff arm. Heads on all the woods.

Always, might as well, better protection for $25.

BTW, annual trip is coming up and anyone else had this happen, last year, waiting at baggage claim, NO CLUBS. "Sorry, they missed the plane." 1st day of 3 day event, have to rent clubs. Only good news is Alaska said they would reimburse me up to $200 for shoes, balls, rental, etc. and clubs arrived after Day 1. They did give me a check on Sun at airport. Still was a bummer.

Always use the stiff arm. Also, the extra room around the club heads is a great place to stuff some dirty laundry. Nothing turns a TSA bag check south like a well packed golf bag loaded with sweaty golf clothes. Once I started doing that, I never saw my clubs carelessly removed and repacked by those clowns again!

Always do and the bend in the stiff arm is proof they do the job no worse feeling than seeing your sticks coming down the luggage ramp top first

Always use mine and move.my clubs around to be centered under the stiff arm. It may not be the end all damage product, but it for sure reduce the risk.

This is a thinking mans solution ... never thought of that. Great idea. My dad used to do essentially this same thing under the cover on his boat for years.

Probably doesn't prevent clubs from shifting around but definitely makes sure the longest part of the bag is the tennis ball on top of broomstick.

I use 2. TSA has broken two on me over the last 2-3 years. Leaving the woods vulnerable so now I use 2 stiff arms. If I’m not feeling lasy I will unscrew driver hesd and wrap it in towel and place it in bag pocket.
  • golftechgolftech Members Posts: 411 ✭✭
I can’t imagine NOT using a stiff arm. Especially with how TSA mishandles these bags. My last trip not only was the top of the Club Glove unzipped, so was the top cover of my golf bag. The Stiff Arm was the only protection to my clubs at all.

It is honestly a great bag for the price study but also doesn't take up a lot of space.
