Pick one of these two groups of courses in Myrtle...

Recommended Posts

My group is deciding between these two groups of courses for this year's trip. Help us decide-

Group 1

Tidewater

All three Myrtle Beach National courses (West, South Creek, and Kings North)

Pine Lakes

Grande Dunes Club

Group 2

Caledonia

True Blue

Pawley's Plantation

Tradition

Litchfield Country Club

Willbrook Plantation

Thanks for your input!

#2 for me. Great part of Myrtle Beach. Murrell's Inlet,Litchfield,Pawley's Island area is very scenic and more laid back. Much more relaxing area. I played Caledonia when the azaleas were blooming, and it was the most beautiful course I've ever played. There are some good restaurants, but not much nightlife. I'm more interested in good golf and a good meal, but I know a lot of guys go to MB for the nightlife, too.

I've ranked each group in the order that I prefer each course in the group. Group 2 wins each match up except that Kings North and Pawleys is a draw IMO, or Kings North wins by a hair. No doubt I'd go with Group 2.

Grande Dunes Club Caledonia
Tidewater True Blue
Kings North Pawleys
Pine Lakes Willbrook
MBN West Tradition
MBN South Creek Litchfield

Personally, I prefer Group 1 but admit that's mostly because of Tidewater. Tidewater is one of my all-time favorite golf courses, but it seems not many people regard it as highly as I do. I also really like Oyster Bay up north.

I also don't think Caledonia is as good a course as most people do. To me it's too short, too tricked-up and idiosyncratic. And True Blue is blahhhh (IMO).

True Blue is blahhhh (IMO).

I'm all for "marching to a different drum", but which holes on True Blue do you find "blahhh" and what about them do you find "blahhh"? IMO, TB has some of the best bunkering and most interesting greens in MB, and the width of the fairways provides lots of options and playability... more than just about any course I can think of in MB. It is a course that makes you think about which club to use and where to place the ball on every shot, and despite all of the strategic challenges it doesn't beat up high handicappers too badly if they play smart and from the right tees.

Thanks for posting all those pics Sabram! Looks fantastic. We are booking tomorrow, group 2 it is. Looking forward to these courses more than any others we've booked over the past 18 years. Thanks everyone for the replies. I just hope I can navigate my way through both Caledonia and TB. They look like shot maker courses.

It's not that I find a specific hole on True Blue to be uninteresting, it's that I've played it at least 5 times and do not have any recollection of any holes other than 18, which I admit is a good finishing hole. Just don't find the place to be at all memorable. And I always vote not to return, and my vote never holds sway.

Each to his own, and I'll acknowledge my feelings about the course don't match up with many others. Obviously you like it, and vive la difference.

You didn't ask, but here are your restaurant recommendations:

- Bisqit - excellent burgers, cool vibe
- Pawleys Island Tavern - locals' bar; live music, good seafood, good pizzas, decorated dollar bills stuck up on the walls and ceiling
- Quigleys - good for dinner; all-you-can-eat ribs or wings specials (both are good); brew their own beer
- Hog Heaven - decent barbecue but the best fried chicken I have ever had (and I've had a lot of it)
- Pastaria 811 - solid Italian
- Perrone's/Chive Blossom Café/Frank's - if you want to do a fancier dinner (with Franks being the priciest)

Also, make sure to have lunch at Caledonia and True Blue before/after you play them.

Have fun.
