Change Balls from Callaway Chrome+ to what?

My go to ball is the Callaway Chrome+. I get good distance with it and it stops quickly on the green. Really like the ball and much lower cost than the ProV1x. You can still get them at Roger Dunn's but sooner or later they will be gone. On my last round, I was using a yellow Chrome+ and my playing partner riding with me was giving me a hard time about using a yellow ball and game me an orange Volvik to play with since "I was so colorful". I didn't pay attention to what kind of Volvik it was but started hitting it on the back nine. It was going straighter than the Chrome+, was equally good distance off the driver and was a least a club longer on my irons. Only downside was it didn't stop as well on the green. I went on to shoot one of the best back nines on my course in quite a while. I told my playing partner I had to go buy a dozen of these balls. It turns out that it was the Volvik DS77 distance ball and was only $22 a dozen. Immediately, my pride kicked in and I told myself I couldn't play a ball that was a game improvement distance ball along with one so inexpensive. My bad, I know I shouldn't have this attitude but it is what it is. As an improving 10 handicapper working hard on my game I keep telling myself "Who cares what ball I play, play what works". So, I decided to give the distance balls a try and bought a dozen of the Volvik's along with a sleeve of Callaway X2Hot+ and a sleeve of Sirxon Z-Star XV.

What do you guys think? Should a 10 handicapper use a distance ball or should I start searching for something similar to the Chrome+? I'm going to start testing the distance balls out in the next few months and hit my normal Chrome+ on one hole and then one of the distance balls on the next and see what the difference in scores is. If the distance balls don't work for me, what do guys suggest I try to replace the Chrome+ with?

A little about my game: I drive the ball 250 to 270 with a 105 mph swing speed. Driving is what is keeping me at a 10 handicap as I hit 1-2 OB's almost every round. I'm really working hard on my driver right now and have started hitting the Taylormade mini driver on tight holes to try and keep everything in play. My iron game is good and I'm a decent putter but am working on that aspect also.

I really appreciate your feedback.

The Z Star SV is not a distance ball. It is Srixon's version of the ProVIx- A premium lower spinning ball.

You could always try the Chrome soft or yet to be released harder version of the Chrome Soft.

If you are playing better and scoring well with a distance ball- I would stick with whatever ball helps your score the most!

Two of my playing partners are die-hard Pro-V fans, but each gave the Chrome Soft a try and both love them. Experiences and opinions likely differ by player, but these might be worthy of a try.

Of note, they are not saying the Softs play just like a Pro-V, but that they like they way these perform for them.

What Is and What Should Never Be

Thanks for the feedback guys. Good news the Chrome+ may not be discontinued. I will try the Chrome soft in my trials.

No, still plenty of them out there. I like both balls to be honest, but lean towards the C+ on spin around the greens.

The new version of the Chrome soft coming out soon will be the best replacement for that.

At least where I am you do not have to look long and hard at all to find plenty, and I do mean plenty, of the original Chrome and Chrome + golf balls.

Roger Dunn still has plenty Chrome+ in yellow. Just bought another dozen along with a dozen Taylormade Project A for my golf ball shootout.

I'm going to do my first shootout Monday using the Callaway Xhot+, Volvik DS77 and Project A. Will put a different ball in play each hole which give each ball 6 chances. Looking forward to trying out these different balls.

I am in your same boat. I wish Callaway would stop rotating their balls so much. It is confusing and I am never sure what to play. I have been thinking of ordering the Buy 3, get 4 ProV1x or just stocking up on Chrome+ before the new, harder version of the Soft comes out (which will be called the Chrome Speed).

My go to ball is the Callaway Chrome+.
Me too and they are getting harder to find at a good price.

My go to ball before the Chrome+, was the Hex Black Tour. I really got along well with the Black and it was a seamless transition to the Chrome +, great distance and really good spin with both IMO. So I started doing a little research and found that one 2014 compression chart had the Hex black at and average compression of 117 and an average cover hardness of 78, the Chrome + had avg ratings of 119 compression and 78 cover hardness. So they both are very simiar in that respect.

The Wilson Staff FG Tour X ball is superior to all of the balls mentioned above. Try it.......you will LOVE it.
Sounds like a ball to look into for sure as it rated very similarly to the Black and +, with avg ratings of 116/79.

EDIT- looks like this ball is discontinued also.

I know there is more to ball performance than just compression and cover hardness, but I don't think it's coincidence that my favorite two balls over the last few years have had almost exactly the same compression and cover specs.?

Monday I played a round and had my go to ball - Chrome +, X2Hot+ and DS77 in a 3 ball rotation. The X2Hot+ seemed very similar to the Chrome+ with the exception it didn't hold as well on the green. The both had the same clicking sound when putted. I didn't notice any difference in the driving distance between the three. The DS77 is definitely softer and you don't get any feedback when hitting it. Especially putting. I like putting it but is does come off a little hotter. After 12 holes I quit the rotation and used only the DS77. Made 2 birdies and 2 boggies for even par on the last 6 holes.

I can tell my test method is not working like I hoped. I need to hit the tested balls on the same shot. Each hole is different and its hard to determine how one ball is playing over another. I have to figure out how I am going to be able to do that on my course since its usually very busy. Do you guys have any ideas on how to do a comparable ball test? I still like the Chrome+ the best, the Volvik DS77 is hanging in there and I'm really looking forward to trying the TM Project A.
