INSPIRATION:

In early 2003 Scotty started working on two designs code-named the “coupe” and “cabriolet.” Players on Tour were asking for a traditional mallet so Scotty listened to what they were looking for and got to work. He started with the shape, which he wanted to keep simple, and experimented with different metals to achieve the sound and feel that complements the design. The result is a stainless steel body with a premium precision milled German stainless steel (GSS) insert. The insert has an elastomer border, which helps achieve the proper sound. Scotty also refined the shaft bend and kept it simple, opting for a single bend shaft giving a clear, unobstructed view of the ball. The “cabriolet” is a traditional mallet shape with the top down! Scotty thinks that the Red X mallets produce some of the best sound of all of his designs.

ROLLING CHANGES:

Red X is available in right and left hand at lengths of 33'', 34'' and 35''.

Putters don't, or should I say didn't last very long in my bag, however bought this putter back in May/June 04 and its been in the bag ever since.

For my stroke it fits perfectly, there is slight toe hang to hit which works well with my subtle swinging gate stroke (In-Square-In), feel is very nice, not the best feeling putter I've used but not bad at all, looks great for a mallet, puts a great roll on the ball, alignment is easy with the 3 lines, distance control is superb, and its pretty forgiving, not MOI forgiving but not bad for a mallet.

I wouldn't be surprised if it stayed in the bag for at least another 18months, the only putter I can see knocking the Red-X out of the bag is another version of the Red-X should Scotty Cameron release one.

I do agree, very nice putter..i like the set-up and lines..reminds me of my very old odessey rossie putter..i loved it..very much the same..only it says scotty..the weighting, look, and feel, as well as sound is perfect..10/10..i have the center shafted version..ive always liked center shafted putters..

Another one I got a demo of. If you like mallets then there is no reason you shouldn't like this. Inspires covidence at adress with the three alignment lines. The feel in this putter however is what truly impresses me. In the Studio Style the insert feels a bit hollow, tinny almost at impact which i shouldn't expect from a £200 putter. In this it feels much better. Dull with none of that sound I get from the Style. Roll is amazing as I have found it to be on every Scotty Cameron putter and a lot of putts ended up in the bottom of the cup. The Baby T grip is also a nice touch although that is maybe more of a personal taste. If I was to buy a new Scotty I think it would be this one and the fact it comes on centre or heel shaft models means you can find one you really like.

Good solid putter, i am a mallet style fan and i do have one of these in my collection, not a putter i like for me for an everyday putter, but a good putter by most standards.

I'm currently looking to demo a standard Red X, not the centre shafted version. I'm curious to know from users of this particular model, if the putter is face balanced.

I currently use and odyssey two ball and always putt better with a face balanced design. Any input into this question would be much appreciated.

Many thanks :)

The Red X is not face balanced, but I purchased the one I have pictured and used it all last year before selling it this winter. I will be receiving another one on Friday with the face insert not blackened in 35" and 2 more in 34". I love this putter!! This finish minimizes any glare that you normally would see from the standard finish.

As you can tell, this is my first time posting pictures into this site. The above post are pictures of my putter. Wow, that custom Red X is gorgeous. Who is doing the work for you?

love the red x in black oxide. personally i wouldn't be able to afford the oxide finish.

i'm going to do the same as you but with black paint instead and the middle sightline will also red. I'm going to add 3 more red sightlines on the area beside the actual ball when you line it up and face will be red with black x.

This putter didn't last in my bag for very long. I prefer a flange type blade, but figured I'd give this one a go because I loved the look @ address.

I found it was very easy to line up putts, and that it was an amazing putter for lagging in the long ones, but I had a hell of a time controlling the distance within 10 feet. I found the ball was flying off the face, moving way too fast for me anyways. I tried to get used to it (as I did love the look @ address), but quickly realized that it would be an uphill battle to keep trying to putt with it, and sold it.

Overall I give it a 3... lagging & look @ address. But the feel inside 10 feet killed it for me.

If you like a blade putter don't expect too much from this. After all it is a mallet through and through.

I've been playing the Red X 34" for almost a year now. I switched from a studio design # 5 (which I still have as a back-up) so as you might have guessed, I'm a mallet putter man.

I am totally impressed by the look and feel of this putter. Contrary to some postings here, the feel on short putts is perfect. Absolutely deadly on 4 footers for me. Lag puts are good too. The triple line allignment aid makes aiming a cinch.

What I must confess, however, is that I have a straight back and through putting stroke and I can see how this putter wouldn't work for someone with an open to close stroke.

This winter I sent my Red X off to BOS for a matte black finish. Not that I didn't like the original, but I just like to tinker. Played with it for the first time last week and am truly impressed. If it was an A with the original finish, its deffinitely an A+ in black.

Anyway, another great putter from Scotty IMHO.

i recently added a scotty cameron redx 33"/350 gram to the collection (nike oz mallet 34", scotty cameron newport beach 33" - shaft filled with sugar, and yes callie 33"). WOW!!!!! i was impressed. i got this on a whim. i've hit it a couple of times at the store and had success (then again, what putter doesn't work in the store?) and liked the feel, which suprised me since i don't like the insert on the newport. this however carried the feel and performance from the shop to the golf course.

todays round, and i'll admit the greens were a little fast, but also beat up, i had 28 putts - 11 on the front 9 and 17 on the back. obviously the back wasn't as good to me, with me leaving 3 of my last 5 putts short but that was all me. i know 28 is great for me, especially after averagine 38 putts/round over my last 7 rounds (one of which was my infamous 45 putt round ). i just couldn't believe how easy the putter was to stroke and how it went right where i wanted it to go. and until the last 5 holes, all my missed putts when just a foot past the hole or was just left or right of the hole. i'm notourious for leaving putts short. this was just a whole new experience for me. if only i could have hit rest of my club today (bladed the irons for 11 of my first 13 shots, 4 holes before i hit a decent drive - 2/14 fairways and 2/18 greens ).

the second round with this putter, was not as succesful, but was a big improvement for me. this putter is going to be in the bag for some time - or until i ho the next great putter.

Very late in the game to be adding a review of the Red X, but I can't let the above post be the final word on this putter as I totally disagree.

I have always preferred mallet putters, and Bobby Grace mallets in particular, both when he was with Cobra and now MacGregor. Never thought I would use anthing else and especially not a Scotty Cameron. But the new face-off putters from Bobby Grace this year were just too strange.

So looking for another mallet I came upon the Red X. First, I think it looks great and others on the putting greens have commented that it looks very good for a mallet. Its simple, clean and the aiming lines are both functional and add to the aesthetics. I don't know why everyone wants to pimp this club out with oxides, paint and other madness, but I'll leave that to the Cameron crazies.

Much more importantly, this putter lays and sets up beautifully. At 35"/330G the putter swings very smoothly and its insert feels and sounds as good or better than any soft metal or ceramic material put in the face of any Bobby Grace putter. Still, the Red X retains just enough feedback to critique swing flaws.

Finally, I would agree with many comments above that this is a fantastic lag putter. I have noticed more 30-40 footers ending up within a few feet of the hole. I am equally happy with its performance inside of 10' and have not had any directional problems.

Bottom line: its a great mallet putter. So if your not a blade snob, but also don't want to fly one of the new spaceships Ping, Odyssey, Nike and many others seem to be cranking out nowadays give it a try. Should be able to get a good price on the Red X as its being replaced by the Red X3 and X5.

Well better late than never. Red X's are quite the Scotty bargain these days.

Firstly I have never really gotten the SC mystique but always wanted one to try.

So I wanted to try a couple of things in a putter - centre shaft, Scotty and a mallet style. Then I did the usual thing a Ho does, impulse bought a Red X2.

Down on the practice green and this thing was hitting them in from all over the place. 4 foot, 6 foot, 8 foot - they just kept dropping.

At 12+++ foot distances I am pretty sure I can get it within a 2nd putt range every time.

If you have always struggled with Anser style blades this may be the thing to try.

I hope it outlasts the honeymoon cause I reckon it might be worth 4 shots off my hcp they way its going at the moment.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents; The Red X is an ok putter. Had it for just over a year and it served me fairly well. However, when a chance came up for me to replace it with a Scotty California Del Mar, I jumped on that ship pretty quick.

The Red X never quite had the feel that I wanted and I found it too light for my taste.

I just wanted to add another opinion because these can be had for really cheap right now. I got mine about a month ago and I really like it but I can see why there would be mixed reviews.

This putter can work wonders for some but not for everyone. If you like mallet accuracy but tend to leave long putts too short I would really look into a Red X. The ball really pops off the face.

I can see blade fans not liking this putter because they'll probably bomb it past the hole and I can see MOI fans not liking the decrease in overall accuracy but for me I think it's a great mix.

Its more accurate than my blade and I've never had a mid mallet that I can roll as effortlessly as this one. Before, I would often leave long putts way short or go 8 feet past and with this putter the same swings that would previously leave the ball 8 to 10 feet short are now ending up as easy 1-3 footers.

Not for everyone but for those having similar difficulties this club could be a huge help
