Pinehurst No.2

Recommended Posts

I am playing Pinehurst No. 2 next week with my father and am very excited. I have heard lots about the history involved there as well as the clubhouse, and of course, the famed course. I wanted to know if anyone has any suggestions for things to see at the clubhouse or tips about the course. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It is indeed an iconic place. Simply walking around looking at the photos at the #2 club house and the Carolina Inn are a treat. A post round cocktail on the deck in either location is pretty sweet. Advice? Hit 'em high and land 'em soft and beware the false fronts on the greens. A good caddy will make your round much more enjoyable.

Just got back from 3 nights at the Carolina, it is absolutely amazing, you will love it.

One suggestion is not to be so worried about the native areas off the tee - we all decided we would probably be a lot more aggressive off the tee next time, the native areas are 100% playable.

Leave yourself some time for a cold drink afterwards on the veranda. Just sitting there watching people come in as the sun goes down and you can hear the chimes of the chapel....its amazing.

Enjoy every moment of it for yourself and with your Dad, these opportunities only come along once in our lives!! So many people have mentioned great ideas above. Soak in the clubhouse, give yourself plenty of time not to feel rushed to make the tee time, but most of all have fun!!!!!!

On a side note, the day I played it was the moment my caddy taught me to put with a 8-iron from off the green, they are that severe... your gonna love it!!
If you get stuck with a big caddie named Cory, figure out a way to swap him for another.
Can you explain why? Love bad caddy stories.
Started out badly even before we teed off. Downstairs outside the caddie masters office he was swapping out my buddies bag into one of their carry bags. He says to my friend, "what's with all the gloves, why do you have 4 gloves in your bag?" In my friends defense, the weather was in the 40s and the forecast called for rain off and on all day. Regardless, not a good way to start the day if you're looking for a big tip. First hole I'm in the waste area to the right off the tee and my ball comes to rest nestled just behind and to the right of one of those large pesky clumps of grass, shrub, or whatever you call them seen in the very first photo posted by dcmidnight above. No way to aim for the green so my first thought was to simply hit it straight or even a bit right as I could get it close to the green but I'd still be in the waste area for my third. Other thought was go backwards and get it onto the fairway. Cory heads over after clubbing my partner, quick glance and hands me a wedge, advises me to just advance into the fairway. I'm thinking yeah I can do that but I might break my wrist on the follow through unless he knows that these clumps have no roots and/or they give pretty easily. So taking his advise I hit the shot and did get it out but I couldn't feel three fingers in my hand and my left wrist was throbbing for about the next three holes. He talked a lot of crap all day but didn't really seem to impart much useful knowledge. Early on I asked him what he thought about putt I had. He walks over, bag still on his shoulder and leans over my ball as if he were putting and says noncommittally "about 2 or 3 left". Two or three feet, two or three cups, two or three balls?? Did the same for my buddy a hole later. Oh and he was quite a bit off on that recommendation. We basically just used him to carry our sticks after the first few holes. However, Eric the other caddie in our group, was excellent.
