Anyone visit myrtle lately ?

Recommended Posts

Going to be in myrtle beach in a few weeks. May 10-17th. I'm familiar with the area since I have been 2-3 times a year for 32 years. Played most of the courses. Just wondering if anyone has played in the recent few days or weeks. I Have a myrtle beach passport I will be booking through, but they don't always know the punching and course maintanence schedules. I can call the courses but sometimes they don't fully tell the truth about conditioning. Only going to play twice since its a family trip so I would prefer nicer courses. Just seeing If anyone has played and had any negative or positive experiences very recently. Thanks in advance!

I'll be down there as well in a couple of weeks for the first time. I look forward to seeing some responses on what courses are best.

Best courses in my opinion are in Pawleys Island (south of Myrtle). Caledonia (love this course), True Blue, Pawleys Plantation. In Myrtle itself I always liked the courses at Barefoot landing but I know some folks don't like them. I think 'The Dunes' is one of the higher rated courses in the area but I've never played there.

If you are staying north I would try Bald Head Island. I also agree with Caledonia, True Blue and Pawleys Plantation. You also have Dunes and Grande Dunes.

Just got back, we stayed at the Legends this time around. Courses were OK there, greens were really slow. Our off site rounds were at the Heritage and TPC MB. The latter had nice greens, but we ran into a slow course on the back nine, after a 90 min front nine, back took over 2 1/2 hrs to finish! Saw at least 2 groups of 5 out on the course, bad form, IMO.

Just returned from Myrtle Beach this week. Only played twice (young family)...Pawleys Plantation & Arcadian Shores.

I've been to Myrtle about a half dozen times. So far my favourite courses there would have to be Tidewater, River's Edge and Leopard's Chase. But I have yet to play some of the top tracks there (Dunes, True Blue, Caledonia, TPC MB). Plan on knocking them all off the list at some point...

Barefoot courses are sub par shape. We just played there 5-22-5-25 Fazio was best condition of the 4. Love had bad fairways and tee boxes. Dye had Sandy greens but rolled surprisingly well. Norman was just awful shape. Soggy, uncut fairways and tees, 3-4 greens dead. Save your $$ and skip that Norman
Over all not impressed with the conditioning of the courses. proshop staff were good but I expect and seen these courses in better shape. No excuse for shaggy uncut Condition.

I visit Myrtle regularly. Just played The Witch this weekend. They have lost their greens. I am not sure what happened but I read somewhere else it may have been over watering and then lots of rain this winter/spring and then the tropical storm a couple of weeks ago. Also recently played Kings North and River Club. Both of those are in very good condition.

From what I hear several courses are hurting because of the wet conditions. Plus they over water because most of them over seed so the snowbirds have green fairways in February. In addition much of the quality is starting to hurt because Myrtle beach golf is hurting with the number of rounds being down in the golf industry. You can certainly tell at the courses they are not the same as they were in the 90's or even a decade ago.

Rounds were only down 1.6% in 2014 over 2013. That is a lower amount of drop of the previous years. Weather in MB was terrible this past winter so growing seasons were interrupted for the course owners, so they are now scrambling to get courses in shape. With Warm sunny weather most will get back to were they need to be in no time flat.

How was Tidewater? My in-laws have a place in Cherry Grove and wanted to play it last year but was told it was closed for maintenance.

Played Heathland two weeks ago and the course was in good shape save for the greens being oddly bumpy. Aesthetically they looked good but when you rolled a putt it was hopping all over the place and wouldn't hold a line. They were decent speed but not a true roll

I played Caldonia, Barefoot Dye course and wachasaw plantation this past weekend. All three were in great shape. wachasaw plantation was in the best shape, Caldonia was probably the best course, but I enjoyed the Dye course the most. It was very different from what I'm used to, which made it my favorite. Their greens were the best of the three. I was disappointed with their range. Wachasaw had the best practice facility IMO.
