Are any young golfers playing 1 irons? Or am I just old school?

Mine may say a 3 but its a 1i

exactly....loft strengthening has literally made the 1 iron obsolete....because it cannot exist anymore in many iron sets. If your 3 iron is 20 degrees a 1 iron is impossible
Yepa...the loft on my 1 iron is 17 degrees. I know they are strengthening the lofts but I just think for me it is an issue of confidence. I can hit a hybrid but not as consistently as a 1 iron. A lot less error with the 1 iron and no difference in distance.

The Mizuno MPH5 1 and 2 should be tried. Hits higher and further than my hybrid use too. Carry 5 wood now in place of Hybrid and didn't have the money for the 2 iron that I wanted.
I learnt to play with Mizuno TP 19's (1 iron to SW) so I became a great long iron striker (better than my low irons for sure). I am only 41 years old but just can't jump on the hybrid hype. God only know I tried to love fairway woods and hybrids but my game got better as soon as I put the 1 iron back in the bag. I now also hit my driver (R1) off the deck when I need to with good results.
Sorry boys. Just check the loft of the 1 iron and it is 16 degrees, and the 3 iron is 21 degrees.

I'd like to play a 2 iron at 18 degrees but then I'd have to take my 3 wood out. Another thing I'm considering is strengthening my 3 iron from 21 to 20 and then I would keep the wood. I'm not a hybrid guy. They launch too high for me.
I agree, the launch on the hybrid is just too much for me...especially with the winds we have to play with here in South West, Western Australia...always have to hit it low.

I have a Callaway Razr-X Forged 2 iron that I had bent to 16º. When I am swinging well I can hit a stinger with it past most people's drivers. I get a lot of attitude for that. "What is that? A 1 iron? Don't you know no one uses those anymore?"

I can't stand hybrids. They just look funny to me but maybe I am just too old school (45). I do have the original hybrid, but it is called a 5 wood. :)

I normally carry a 1iron, sometimes if need be I'll swap it out for a 4 wood. For some reason I've never been that fond of 2 iron's though...
I've toyed around briefly with hybrids before but they've never given me the sort of feedback I like.

I got a MacGregor JNP c. 1990ish 1 iron bent to 15.5 degrees with a soft stepped s300 shaft. Sweet spot is the size of a dime, and the ball is taller than the club face. Its pretty much 250 or 180, nothing in between.

Also, I was almost dumb enough to replace it with a UDI. That lasted a couple rounds...

BTW I'm 20 so I suppose I'm youngish

I believe TMAG and Callaway have 3 irons that are 17-18 degrees..

In a players' club set, yes the lofts have remained a bit more traditional

Just really hate hybrids! God bless those who love/play them. Very 'old school.' Have Eye2 2 and 1 irons. When ground gets hard and firm there is nothing like the 'knife.' If you can get these airborne they will land and roll a mile. Guess you had to start playing with these in a time when there were no hybrids.
Yep, you certainly are youngish but great to hear that I am not the only one in the world who plays 1 or 2 irons and can't do the hybrid thing!!!
I totally agree. I love smashing the ball with the 1 iron and generally there are very few lies around the place where a 1 iron will not work. I have the callaway x14 1 iron and it is so forgiving it is ridiculous. Lot more forgiving than the 1 & 2 iron TP 19 blades I learnt to play with.
