Send me a reminder message here when the date gets closer and I'll see what my schedule looks like. Always like getting out with WRX'ers.
I have to warn you though....................I'm a Buckeye grad.
-But hey, my parents live in Michigan. ;)

I can't imagine their shame!!!

Just kidding.

What's good to play now? Will be there July 4-11 and looking to play a few rounds. Thanks

Most courses have punched in late May / early June so they are pretty much healed up and in good shape right now.
Shouldn't be hard to find someplace nice to play. Do a search here and find the other Hilton Head threads with lots of course recommendations. I went through just about every course here, both public and private, and gave my .02 cents on them all.

Just finished the Robert Trent Jones course @ Palmetto Dunes about 3 hours ago. Anyone who pays over $70 for this course has been robbed at gun point by a 2 year old toddler. Service, bad. Conditions of driving range and clubhouse, bad. Tee boxes, eeekkkk, not up to par with the cost of this golf course. Indeed, you have an oceanfront GREEN, not a hole, a GREEN, and a teebox, that's all the ocean you get on this course. On hole 11, you can look down and you can see the next 4-5 flags, one right after the other. No variety to the back 9. The last 3 holes were nice, but other than that, the course was plain blah to me. I am VERY happy I get to go back to playing courses in Orlando and Tampa for MUCH cheaper that are in much better shape. If you MUST, stay in Bluffton and play HH National or Old south. You'll be better off. Trust me.

Sorry you had a bad experience. I've never been a big fan of the Palmetto Dunes courses or their prices (especially for vacationers) but they are usually in decent condition. Must have caught them at a bad time. Happens once in awhile. I've played courses in Orlando and Tampa that have been in crappy condition one year, and fine the next year. Just the way it is.

I don't think the conditions were bad throughout. The greens were fine, a little bit spotty as far as speed is concerned, but not bad at all. I think a bad experience when you initially come in makes it pretty tough for someone to change their minds. I kept an open mind through the round because I did want to have a good time, I hadn't seen my brother in a long time and this was our first round together in a while, so that was the most enjoyable part of the round, spending time with him.

They have struggled with tee boxes on the Jones course for the past two decades! I have no idea what is going on, but they are never in what I would consider good shape. I have no issues with the layout. I've probably played that course 50 times over the years and have always enjoyed it.

I would say they have two other "issues". The first is slow play. That is pretty much par for the course when it comes to resort courses, but with no turn at the clubhouse, they seem to run into more problems. With their tracking software, this should never happen but it always does. The second issue is service on the course i.e. the beer cart. It is very sporadic and sometimes the halfway house is closed. They really need to get their chyte together in this area. With the high temps and no turn at the clubhouse, they need to provide hydration on the course.

Old South is a steal and is only 10-15 min off island...it's in better shape than some of the courses that charge twice as much.

So sorry not to respond. My computer was down for a while and I forgot I had started this thread. Played 3 times last week. Heron and ocean. Herron was aerated. Not good. Best part of the trip was using the immaculate putting green at Harbour Town every night to practice.

No sweat. Give me a shout next time.
The practice green at Harbor Town IS pretty sweet. Can't wait for the course to reopen so I can check out the changes.
Your next trip here, you may want to either bump the trip up a couple weeks or move it back a couple. Everyone is punching their greens right around now so most courses will be a mess for a little while. At this time of year, the greens are PERFECT right before they get punched, so moving your trip up a couple weeks would probably be best.
Hope you had a great visit!
