SM5 wedges too meaty for anybody else? need smaller heads...

Recommended Posts

Been a long-time player of vokey since 2008, have played my 2009 spin milled forever and can't find anything better. Been trying some SM5s but the heads are cleavers compared to the 2009, just ugly looking. Anybody been a long time vokey user and switched to something else, and if so, what brand that performs similarly to vokey. Something with smaller heads. Thanks.

Unless set on going away from Vokey wedges, the sm4 series does not seem to have larger look that is present in sm5.

yes!!!! thank you ! I have screamed this since they came out and seems like I am the only guy who sees this.... I have bought and traded 2 different sm5 setups and just cannot get used to them.. I can play them..but they are just so huge compared to my older 588 or when going from set pw to sm5 GW.... Of what I have tried I can tell you that scratch 8620 is a very small head which I love .... I have a 56 .... not all scratch mind you ..I have a forged 53 that's huge with a lot of offset...so 8620 only per my experience... also mach daddy 2 tour grinds... they are smaller... past that I cant find it... older Cleveland 588 but conforming examples are hard to find... I can tell you it isn't anything new from Cleveland..they have gone GI super sized like vokey as well...

edit..Mitchell is on to something.... sm4 TVD does look good.. I saw a worn out one in the bargain bin at my local shop Saturday.... I think its definitely smaller than any sm5 have looked at

Personally play sm4 TVD 54* M grind, stock sm5 54* with M seems much taller in face height and transition to hosel.

Mizuno MP - T wedges have a nice small head, the Mack Daddy tour grind wedges as well. I wanted to like the SM5's but I agree that the heads are too large and just look funny...

Totally agree. I still use my SM4s and the 5s look like spades.

Some good ones have been mentioned here - Mizuno T5 is a nice head, as is the Callaway MD2.

However, *the* best head shape I've seen for a long time is the new Taylormade TP EF Wedge. It's perfect... and it comes with KBS as standard :nyam:

Definitely take a look.

nice thanks, I've heard the SM4s have smaller heads but haven't had the chance to compare side by side to SM5. I'd like to stick with vokeys mostly because I have an all Titlesit bag. Any idea if the TVD have a smaller head than the SM5?
TVD Heads are smaller, also a little more rounded, much nicer looking than the SM5's. I also thought the finish on the SM5's looked cheap and garish.

Both of those are more playable in my opinion; smaller and better looking. Optics are VERY important with wedges.

Long time Vokey player

Wasn't easy but I changed to the
Mac Daddy 2 Tours

Have the straight leading edge that we're used to
Better feel
Comes with a very good all purpose grind
(I'm sure others can go into more details about the grind than I can)

Picked up a 54 chrome and and darker 58
Highly recommend ???

This guy is trollin Titleist pretty hard, between the demanded recall of the intentionally asymmetrical GoLo putters, and this. I like the look of the SM5's, the original 588 wedge was rather large, so it doesn't bother me.

Yep. I hate how tall they are. Here is a side by side and one stacked directly on top of the SM5. The oil can wedge is the '09 Vokey 52.08 and the chrome is the SM5 52.08.

Oh, without question. Noticed it the first time I looked at an SM5 and every time since. It's just so tall on the neck side. There's a good picture comparison above.
I want to throw another perspective in there...my irons are i20s, and the short irons are kinda huge. Took a while to get used to when I first got them a couple years ago. My 52 is a SM4 TVD M grind, and my 56/60 are both SM5 gold nickel M grind. I'm finding that I don't like going from large Ping W to small SM4 52 to larger (relatively) SM5 shorter wedges. My solution would normally be to get a SM5 52, but they don't come in the M grind which happens to fit my swing perfectly. The F grind interacts with the turf all wrong for me. TVD shop doesn't offer the 52 in M grind anymore either...bummer.

I don't have any issue at all with the size of my SM5s. The finish could have something to do with it, I really like the gold nickel. Could also be that I'm used to larger short irons with my Pings. I also think it's crazy to call them "GI". These aren't eye2 XGs or anything; they're still a fairly compact head and the sweet spot isn't huge. I would call them more "midsize". This follows the trend of other OEMs as well, with the PM grind Callys and Ping glide wedges being so hot right now.

I may end up just getting an i20 U wedge to bridge the gap, or pick up a glide. Still love pitching/sand play with the SM5s and they're not going anywhere anytime soon.

PS - I have 52 and 58 SM4 TVD M grind that I'll sell any of you boyz, couple seasons of wear, PX 6.0 shafts. Going on eBay this week.

The size does not bother me in the SM5 52* and 58*. I was also bagging the SM5 46*, but have since replaced it with the MP-68 PW. I originally didn't have any issue with the 46* Vokey, but after picking up the MP-68's, I much preferred the size of the stock PW.

I had a set of SM5's thinking they would be the same shape, but I sold them because they look too big to my eye. I went back to my SM4's. though the grooves are getting a bit worn and I need to start looking for some replacements soon. I did see the Taylormade EF's and they have a VERY nice shape. Perhaps I'll try some Mizunos or Callaways? Always been a Vokey guy, so anything besides them might be tough to get used to.

Did some tinkering with this today. I hit some TVD SM4s vs. standard SM5 (i have to stick with vokeys). It wasn't even close, TVD SM4s felt way better. Odd because I think they are both cast from same material. Whatever it was, they were way better. Both were 56 M grinds. Better flight, turf interaction, spin, etc..
