I played it late last year and it was in good condition, as far as the public courses I played in central ohio that was by far in the best condition, but that is to be expected.

I played it at the end of last month on a Monday after a weekend tournament and they had the greens lightning fast. Honestly, with the slope some of the greens have out there and some of the pins that day they were almost too fast. An example was #14, the green slopes hard left to right and the pin was right on a ridge. If you were left of the pin there was literally no way to end up better than 20 feet past the hole. However, that is just being picky, as the course was in great shape and is always awesome to play!!

Have fun

Will be heading down to play Longaberger / Eaglesticks right after Father's Day. Have not played either. Really looking forward to the road trip!

Just play longaberger twice. Eagle sticks is kind of quirky (personally I hate the layout but some love it) and I have heard it has really gone down hill conditioning wise. Longaberger, however, is always great.

As a second course (after Longaberger) there are many superior public course choices in central Ohio that I'd recommend over EagleSticks. Northstar (outside Sunbury, just off I-71) is a good one, as are the Players Club at Foxfire and Raintree South - formerly Cook's Creek (both south of Columbus). I'm also fond of Darby Creek (Marysville) and Indian Springs (Mechanicsburg), though I haven't played either of them for at least 10 years. None of these is remotely as good as Longaberger, though. A second round at Longaberger would probably be my personal choice.

You can also call Hickory Hills Golf Club south of Columbus to become a "member for a day." It's a greatly underrated private course; maybe the only excellent layout that Jack Kidwell ever designed. Certainly worth a call to them.

Granville (Denison) is just OK. I grew up playing the course when it was pure Donald Ross, and it was a terrific layout. They removed some of the best holes and replaced them with mediocre Kidwell holes in order to put houses in. The course suffered as a result. Still not bad, especially if played from the tips. From what I see of Red Hawk Run, it looks more interesting to me, personally.

If you stop off in Granville, have a beer at Brews. Terrific tap. And visit the Buxton Inn, which has served continuously since 1812.

I agree about Granville. I honestly don't see the appeal that so many see. If I was not told it was a Ross design I would think it was just an average muni.

Indian Springs is like a beautiful lady badly beaten. It is a tremendous layout that had fallen into terrible disrepair. I mean, like among the worst I have ever seen. Thistles growing in bunkers with hardly any sand, crumbling cart paths, weeds all over the fairway. It was once a very good course but will take some work to get back to that.

I sort of like Eagle Sticks. It may not be great like Longaberger but better than Granville IMO. But I will second Northstar and Cooks Creek.

Northstar and Raintree South (Cook's Creek) are great tracks.

Thanks guys for all the feedback. May swap out Granville for Cook's Creek (Raintree South). I was attracted to Granville for the Donald Ross factor, but seems like it has some undergone some not-so-positive changes. We're "stuck" with Eagle Sticks though, as part of a package deal with Longaberger.

hahahaha, I have always thought that about hickory hills, the only good kidwell design, doesn't have that awful flat, straight forward layout with the most boring bunkers ever. although, shamrock's layout was a kidwell design and I thought that was a good layout, but it was never maintained well at all, hence why it is closed.

I have played a lot at Rain Tree South this year and I think the conditions are good. Yes some of the infrastructure of the course has deteriorated over the years, but the tees, fairways, and greens have been great when I have played. I prefer the layout at Rain Tree greatly over that of the Player Club at Foxfire. I have never played Black Diamond unfortunately. Longaberger is just a damn good golf course and I just really love the design/variety of the holes. I also enjoy Eaglesticks. The architect who also did Rain Tree South did an excellent job with the piece of land he had to work with considering it isn't the biggest piece of land and it also has some steep terrain. The course isn't difficult, but I think it is very fun to play and a few holes can bite you. The Granville Golf course is a fine old school golf course. I haven't played there in probably almost fifteen years and the back nine had already been reworked. Hell i am guessing it has been at least 20 years since they made the change (I didn't play it pre-redesign). I guess it was a bad move based on the opinions I have heard, but none the less the course that survives is still a solid place to play. I guess I am really easy on golf course and just love to play golf. I have played Muirfield Village, Scioto, NCR South, and Firestone South to name a few of the other Ohio courses I have played and so I have tasted the upper tier of Ohio golf. I just wanted to add that so you know It's not like I play all goat tracks and overrate the decent courses I play.

Wittgolfer...thanks. Raintree South it is then. Tough to beat twilight rate of $30 with cart!

Yup RTS is a great layout. Just a really fun course to play. 5-6 years ago it was up there with longberger (when it was in good condition). The conditioning has certainly dropped off but not to point where the course isn't worth playing.

If you're anything like me, you would think the layout at The Players Club is a hot steaming pile of poo. I can't stand that place (even though it's always in decent shape)

[/quote]I'll let you know how things go. We've got Red Hawk Run, Eagle Sticks, Raintree South and Longaberger on the itinerary. 4 rounds in 3 days. Can't get here fast enough, just hope the weather co-operates...
