Also on the wrong side of 30. I played black for the first time last year using a push cart. BRUTAL!!! I had no idea there were so many elevation changes on black. Of course, it didn't help that I am out of shape and the weather was hot!!!

I've played all Bethpage courses except for Red. I hear great things about it. Hope to play it end of this month. By far, Green is my favorite. Challenging greens and somewhat secluded from blue and yellow.

[/quote]black is the most demanding my fav there, followed by red. Yellow is least fav. Blue has some gimmicky holes, like that first par 5.

Haha I have been carrying on the Black for 15 years. I look defeated by the time I am staring at the 15th hole approach to the green. Heading there now. Getting too old for this but it's the price I pay to play a nice course in Metro NY without club costs.

Course is in flawless condition right now. Lush off the fairways and greens so make sure you find fairways and greens. Greens rolling fast. Tee boxes perfect. Got there at 3:45 send group out as a foursome. 6:42. Never got on that side of 7:00 in my 16 years of playing there first group did play slow but we managed 4:45 to finish.

Leave the push cart home. Much much easier to carry black. The slopes will kill you either way but carrying makes it much more manageable. Also pushing the cart through the rough which you will undoubtedly become friends with will literally drain you within a few holes. Enjoy

Red is IMO the best public course on the island. Long even from the whites. 1 and 9 are usually layup holes for me and I get it out there 260-270. Great course, very demanding but also very scoreable. Do not need driver on 6. Last par 5 (believe it is 16), do not go straight with your drive. Cut the heck out of the corner and you will have a good chance at reaching in 2. Great course. Enjoy

I've carried the Black for 16 years. I must say that pushing a cart makes it a bit easier and you feel less fatigued in the shoulders and back. It is a complete night and day difference in terms of how you feel after the round, or even getting to 15. Only hole that presented a little more difficulty was walking up 18. I always dump my bag and now cart at the base between 15 and 16. No reason to push your cart through the rough either.

I am now a push cart convert.

Yes, across the road with the elevated green. That is the hole where I realize how shot I am as I realize I have to hit two good shots and walk up it after lugging my bag around all morning with no sleep!

You just cross the road. Unless you found a secret passageway that leads you back to the tunnel but 1st green is a hike from 15 tee.

hahaha. no secret passageway. Only played once so don't remember much except I got a butt whooping. Hope to play for the second time ever end of this month.

man, if the bethpage courses were the only local track by me, I would be totally fine with it. Unfortunately, up here in Westchester County, the county courses are pretty bad. I mean, Winged Foot is down the block but will never get a chance to play.

The only bad part of the black course for pro tournaments is 18. If you get to 18 with the lead, should hold on. Havent played the course in 5 years. It was a 5 wood 8 iron hole, alittle bit of challenge with the uphill green. But a tour pro should be able to hit that green in reg and two putt normally

You live in Westchester and you are not playing Bethpage on a frequent basis? I grew up in Yorktown and always made the trek. Leave by 2, in the parking lot by 3-3:15 and tee off anywhere between 6-7am. Shame on you.

Where in Westchester do you play? I'm generally at Bethpage but I'll come up to Hudson Hills and Centennial a few times a year. The other 4 courses are always in great shape and for $42 you can't beat it. Especially if you are into early AM golf.

The Black is just a brutal round of golf. Kicks the hell out of you both physically & mentally. And I love it!!! The way I prepare to play the Black is to play the Red from the tips and I MUST break 80. If I don't break 80 on the Red from the tips I will NOT attempt to play the Black. I, to, agree with most people that the Red course is the best track on Long Island... And probably in the tristate area. The Red, truly, does set the standard for all public golf in the NY area. If they could only put the 1st & 18th holes on the Black it would be very difficult not to consider the Black as top 5 courses in the U.S. consistently every year!...

TITLEIST!...
