Best in State Map

Anyone have a link to a map that shows the "best in state" public courses? I'm planning a mid-August trip, and I'd like to hit 7 to 9 courses during a 5 to 6 day trip. This requires that courses be within an hour of each other to be played the same day, and within 3 hours for a next day visit. Seeing the courses on a map would help greatly with the planning process. Searching for individual courses on Google maps is a PITA.

Right now, I'm considering a trip from Little Rock/Hot Springs, through Branson, MI, and finishing in Kansas City. However, other treks may be worth considering.

Edit: Here's an initial version of a CSV file that can be loaded into a custom Google map. Ideally, the courses need latitude/longitude to be exact. However, the map is certainly usable for some general planning. I used the map when planning my recent trip to Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Columbus. I could not figure out how to get two pushpins to display when two courses are located at the same location.

I don't know of any map that shows all of the Best in State Courses. But as you probably already know, the two courses in Branson that are #1 & #2 in the state are Payne Stewart GC and Buffalo Ridge. These 2 courses are only about 15 miles apart and easily playable on the same day. Can't really speak about Kansas City, as I live on the other side of the state, but if you check out the Midwest section of this forum, there is usually a lot of KC guys posting about the courses.

Edit: may want to check you dates if you play Buffalo Ridge, they are holding the Missouri Open this year, but I think that is in September.

Edit 2: there is a dead zone between Springfield/Branson, MO and Kansas City, MO with not many quality golf courses. If you travel just a hour further east after leaving Branson, you can cut up through Lake of the Ozarks and play some decent courses in that area.

I'm not interested in every course in every state. There are *thousands* of courses in the U.S., most of them goat tracks. As the title states, I'm interested in the *best* in each state. I want the courses listed on the Golfweek list displayed on a single map.

Here's what you do...

Decide what state you want to go to
Find a list of top public courses in that area
Pull up GoogleEarth
Search for each desired course within GoogleEarth
Drop pins on the location of the courses you want

There ya go! Custom map of only the courses you want. Ain't hard.

That's a pain in the a**. Cutting and pasting 10 to 25 places individually in each state. There's got to be a way to import a data file.

You're asking for a top ten public course map of the entire Unites States? It's gonna be a PITA regardless.

I don't think you realize what you're asking for. That's a map of 500 courses.

If you don't wanna put some work into it I think you're SOL on this one buddy.

Yup. With less than 5 minutes of editing, I was able to copy and paste Michigan's top 20 list from Golfweek into a csv file, and load it into a new map. 'Sweet.

Anyhow the Golf Digest lists are made up mostly of private clubs. Only 5 of 25 are public in the Arizona list. GolfWeek's state-by-state lists are "Best you can play." (public). The map would be nice - let us know if you find one.

I couldn't find a state-by-state best-you-can-play map, but I'm in the process of editing the list to create a csv file, which can be easily loaded into Google Maps. I'll post the list when I'm done, which should take a few days, as I only have a few free minutes at at time.

The only snag I've run into is when two courses are located in the same city. On the map, only one course is displayed. I assume there's a way to force two push-pins to render.

My assumption would be if you had the unique addresses for eaach course in the same city that the Google Maps API will identify them as unique and place 2 pins on your map...

He's right, not many very nice courses between Springfield, MO and KC area. However there's two that would be worth your time if you're interested. One is my home course, Silo Ridge CC in Bolivar right on main route from Branson to KC and Old Kinderhook in Camdenton just a hour away. SR is private, in middle of nowheresville but I can get you on easily. I might be biased but I feel it's one of best value to play on in my opinion. It's hosted several state tournaments.

This is correct.
We do something similar to track our project locations at work.
I could not find a way to force it to place 2 pins for the same city.

I've completed the first pass of a CSV file containing the Golfweek Best in each State. Since there are multiple courses in some cities, I have to make a second pass to add address information, and then I'll post the CSV on the thread.

Nice work and thanks for the future share. I think you can create the map in google maps and actually make it public and shareable. That way you could also just provide a link to the map. I haven't done this yet either, but I think that is something you can do with Google Maps.

I'll look into it. I figured that by posting the CSV and the instructions for using it, one can tailor it to their liking.

I've added the addresses to the courses in cities that have multiple courses, so now they show up as separate push pins. However, in the cases where there are two courses at the same resort, only one course is displayed. I tried differentiating the course addresses with "A" and "B" designations, but that didn't seem to work. Any idea how to force two push pins with the same address?

I have a hard time believing that the Payne Stewart course in Branson is ranked the #2 golf public course in the state of MO. I've only played it once but was not impressed at all. Old Kinderhook at the Lake of the Ozarks is way more enjoyable and is in Fantastic shape this year.

I updated the original post with the CSV data for a custom map. Hopefully someone finds it useful. It's based on the Golfweek Best State-by-State Courses You Can Play 2014 list. When I get time I'll try to update it based on the 2015 list.

I'm sure that has to do with it not having the street addresses to make the data for each location 'unique' in terms of how the mapping software treats it.

Either way, nice work! I know there are some free Geocoding services out there, that you could get esimtated latitude/longtitude coordinates for the addresses if you had them but would take a fair amount of time and effort to update every course record in your list to include the street address info.

Doesn't appear to be any way to filter by private/public on the map. Also, it seems to be missing quite a few top public courses.
