Who goes gloveless?

Recommended Posts

I have recently decided to try playing without a glove. The decision was partly due to costs, but I also wanted to see from a performance perspective. I have always taken the glove off for short game shots so I wanted to see if the feel advantages applied to full shots too. Have been doing it for about a month and so far so good. I haven't missed it at all, but I will put in the disclaimer that it has been dry so far. I've found that I like the extra feel of no glove and have had no problems with blisters. I think gloves have become somewhat antiquated. On old leather or full cord grips a glove was more important, but modern softer compounds are easier on the skin making gloves superfluous. I realise this theory doesn't pass the age old wrx test of what do tour players do, but on tour gloves can be a source of endorsement income so it might not be that important. Fred has never worn one and he swings the club pretty fast so there is an argument against gloves being essential for the fast swing speed which seems mandatory for posters on this site.

I have not used a glove for the past 30 years. Of course, I live out west with a drier climate than most, so your mileage may vary. I used to have Green Victory grips on all clubs, with full cord on woods and no cord on irons. Lately I've been using some Lamkin X-10's (I think) on all clubs and have really enjoyed the performance.

Sometimes I put a little tape on a couple fingers if I am playing a lot, but for the most part I hvae not needed a glove. I stopped way back due to cost. Now that I can afford them I find that I do not like them.

Sounds like my promising early impressions aren't as crazy as glove manufacturers would have me believe. I think the experiment will become standard practice. I thought I would feel naked without a glove but it became very natural ver quickly for me. I will probably keep a glove in the bag for rainy days, but the rest of the time I'm glove free.

It falls under the category of brainwashing. No shortage of that in golf (must play blades, must have the world's spiniest ball, must carry your clubs, must join a private course,...)

Get the grip fit to what feels comfortable size wise and keep them clean. No need for a glove with todays grip materials.

I'm a stickler for clean grips as I love that tacky feel. I clean them every month at least and always before an important round. I think you are right that it's important to keep grips clean, whether you wear a glove or not.

My dad has never worn a glove. My hands sweat when its hot out. Theres no way I could play without one.
Actually when I was a teen I threw my glove away mid round one day because it had a huge hole in it. We get to the next tee box which is a 190 yard par 3. At the time I think I hit a 5 wood and the dang thing slipped out of my hands and about 20 yards left of me into the woods. Couldnt find the club and to top it all off it was my dads club. He was super pissed. About a month later an old timer who walked the entire course for balls found it and gave it to me. It was steel shafted and had a little rust on it but other than that it was fine. Still remember the club, a MacGregor Jack Nicklaus CG1800 5 wood. I dont think Ive hit a full shot since without a glove.

I wore a glove for a couple years, always hated it. A little white sports tape on my left index finger and I'm good to go.

I started using a glove only because when I begun playing I would hit the driving range and hit a couple hundred balls at a time. I don't think I would have any skin on my hands if I didn't use a glove then.

During a recent round where it started raining I had to take off the glove because it was too slippery and I actually shot a really good score and didn't think anything of it. So the last few rounds I experimented on not using a glove and I really don't miss it at all.

Just an extra hassle to worry about taking on and off, plus my left hand is finally tan now. I found it weird having a white left hand only. LOL

No glove.

I live in Tallahassee, Florida and it is ridiculously humid. And I walk.

I just carry a rosin bag and an extra towel to keep my hands dry. I also use cord grips.

I found I sweated through a glove and it was more of a pain in a**.

i played gloveless, then out of whim, i started wearing some gloves made with syntatic materials texture like a golf club grip.

just not as durable.

i quite like it, i can really swing hard as i feel more confident about holding on to the club.

Then i thought maybe i should get some nice pricey gloves and got a real leather one, hoping it would do the same but last longer.

But leather does not grip as well as the rubbery syntatic material.

so yea, i would say if your glove is good. you will like it, but it is more economical and environmentally friendlier to play without gloves.

I decided to try going gloveless and see how it goes. So far so good! Really enjoying the added touch, just curious to how it will be this summer. Golf gloves are more expensive than new grips (I use Tour Velvets).

Picked up a little rosin bag from a bowling alley...or sometimes sporting goods stores have them. Love the rosin in the summertime. Still wear a glove, but am thinking of only doing so off the tee, but I practice often without gloves to really feel what I'm doing. Never wear one on short shots inside 100. .
