Anybody have or had a frozen shoulder?

Recommended Posts

Had this since March. Still can golf because it hasn't affected the under arm motion of the golf swing. Does it eventually keep you from swinging?

A chick i used to golf with had this and was unable to swing a club or really do her job as a fitness instructor because her shoulder was, shocking i know, frozen. I understand its terribly painful too. I guess like nost things health related there are levels of severity, hoping yours isnt as bad and you get back out there quickly!

Yes I have this and it was so bad I had pain just buttoning up my shirt or lifting my arm to brush my teeth.
Got physio and did stretching exercise. sleept on the good shoulder and it was back to normal after 6 months.
This occurred after I learned some TGM stuff and discovered PP#4 (left armpit) and for next few rounds I was tensing my left shoulder so hard during the swing that I must have cause injury to my left shoulder. It was a really bad experience trying to use that knowlege.

Have you been diagnosed with frozen shoulder by a doctor? If you really have frozen shoulder, I can't believe you can still swing a club. A typical definition is "Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) is stiffness, pain, and limited range of movement in your shoulder" with a huge emphasis on pain. Some movements or bumping something can cause excruciating pain that can turn you into a basket case until the pain dies down.

I've had both right and left frozen shoulders that started with insignificant injuries at the time, one started after soreness from lifting some heavy equipment and boxes, the other started from jamming my arm against a tool barrel in the garage. For unknown reasons, the shoulders became worse over time instead of getting better like they do 99.9% of the time.

For me, the doctor started with a shot of cortisone with very long needle deep into the shoulder (probably the most painful shot I've had). I've heard that if you get treatment fast enough, the cortisone shot can give an immediate cure for some people(which I can believe because I had a sore hip once, and a cortisone shot fixed the hip before I left the doctor's office). Then about 3+ months of physical therapy several times a week. And even then, I didn't have full range of motion until about a year later. I didn't/couldn't hit a golf ball for over a year each time it happened.

Just got the diagnose. My pain comes from overhand and side arm. So far the swinging the club motion hasn't caused great pain. The dr. said the under motion may/may not become a problem. Going to the specialist for a further exam.

Cortisone is great stuff. Had them three times in different areas.

Not a great injury. It stopped me from playing golf for about 10 years. Cortisone helped but was only temporary, 3 - 4 months or so. It used to switch from one shoulder to the other. Oddly, I'd wake up one morning and be completely disabled when the night before it was fine. Almost regretted going to bed.

I couldn't thread a belt or reach my wallet in my back pocket. It is amazing how the details of your life are affected by the affliction. I worried about getting arrested because handcuffs behind the back would have been impossible. (How stupid is that!)

Went to a chiropractor and he manipulated it by jerking the shoulder toward the socket. After the white light of pain subsided, it was not at all fixed. Did it twice before getting a bit wiser. I tried giant arm circles until I came to tears.

But, being diabetic for 50 years, frozen shoulder is much more common.

Apparently, there is a surgery where you are knocked out and the doctor moves the shoulder through its range of motion, tearing loose the "frozen" tendons and muscles. Sounds like a major ouch to me. Not sure what the surgery part is all about since it has been some time since it was researched.

Then, out of nowhere, it went away. Have been "cured" for about 8 years now and was able to get back to golf. Still, and to this day, every morning I wake up anxious.

That procedure sounds like what my mom had on her knee. She had a knee replacement and the physical therapy after wasn't going as well as the doctor wanted. He knocked her out for about 30 minutes and manipulated it to loosen up scar tissue. It didn't hurt at all and her range of motion was great.

Yes!!! I had it happen about 5 years ago. Out of the blue. No idea what is was at the time. Right shoulder. Was out of the country on business and BAM!!!
When I returned home I went to my chiropractor and she explained it to me and used the term "frozen shoulder."
A few rounds of treatments and some at home exercises and it disappeared. Woke up one day and it was like it had never happened. Still, every time I get a twinge I start to wonder.
Very painful, and I have a high pain theshold.

My sister had the procedure done when therapy wasn't working and it's called a manipulation. There's no surgery, but you are put completely out under anesthesia and the orthopedic doctor breaks up the adhesions that are restricting movement by moving the arm and shoulder around. I'm pretty sure you would be screaming in pain and pass out if you weren't already unconscious.

Mine froze up pretty badly from a labral tear this year but once I had cortisone shot into it I was able to start much more aggressive therapy to get back ROM. I'm avoiding having surgery to repair it so have to work pretty hard on building strength and increasing mobility. If you don't work on the mobility every day, your limited ROM will continue to lead to inflammation, thus, continued frozen shoulder. That's why cortisone is such a big help - the relief from inflammation allows you to work through a greater range. It's something you have to work on every single day. Increase mobility, decrease inflammation.

Hope that the Orthopedist offers the cortisone. I know it can be painful but I'm tired of surgeries. Rehab starts is coming first though.

I had it last year, kept me from playing golf until fall. I still have some symptoms, but it is much improved. Physical therapy by someone who really knows frozen shoulder is what cured it for me. It is an awful ailment, I could not raise my arm at all, the pain was nagging. Hated to take a year off of golf, but I actually think my swing is a little better from the loss of motion. I have not lost any distance. Good luck and be patient. Time heals it more than anything else.

I had frozen shoulder seven years ago. Went to one doctor and got a cortizone shot but it was very little help. Played golf with it but it was very painful. It was in my right shoulder. About half way into my backswing it felt as if someone was stabbing my shoulder with a ice pick. Finnaly went to a shoulder specialist at Vanderbilt. He had me do therapy for over 3 months and it did not work ( the PT nearly made me cry many times). While trying to play during this time fat shots really hurt a lot. Finally the doctor did surgery and I was better the next day. Still took about 1 year for all of the pain to go away. Now any time I feel a little pain there I do stretching exercises with a pulley device that goes over a door. After a couple of days of stretching it is fine.

Had two frozen shoulders at the same time, was able to golf. But, couldn't reach above my shoulders very well and nearly impossible to reach around and loop my belt. I went to a PT and he stretched it out. oouch. What made a difference for me was to put my arm on/against a high dresser - maybe 1/4 my arm was above it, which kind of angled it 45 degrees and I pushed against the dresser and it stretched out my arm/shoulder. I did this every day twice a day and within a few weeks it was better. At the time, I was convinced, this made a difference.

Went to the PT today. She doesn't believe it is frozen but just stiff. After moving the arm around actually felt much better. Will see the Orthopedist next week to confirm.

 • 2 weeks later...

Update: have gone to two physical therapy sessions. Have gone to a bone dr. and received cortisone. Golfing tomorrow.

It was stiff but not a typical frozen shoulder.

Still doing the exercises and ice but have been told I don't need anymore PT.
thanks for the replies.

NoTalentLefty, How is the results of your frozen shoulder? Just recently, I realized as a result of my right and left frozen shoulder, I can angle my right arm to 45 degrees. For a long time, I was thinking I must be doing something wrong. But, since I can not get my right arm, elbow and shoulder into a right angle, I think the results of a frozen shoulder is the issue and not some kind of swing fault. Tanner

Ah, are you able to get your arm to a 90 degree angle? I can do the Mike Malaska stand up the club in the backswing naturally, lol
