Best below the radar set of all time

Basically thought it would be fun to call out some of the best under rated clubs of all time. I went out to a course today while away on business and played with rental clubs. The set was 3-pw wilson tour cast fat shaft irons. These things were fugly but played like some of the best gi clubs I've ever touched. Not the longest by any means bit straight as an arrow every time I tried my best to hook one with a huge inside out draw type swing and couldn't move it an inch. These things were straight. The shafts had no torque at all but there was no twisting no matter how heavy I got one. They were really amazing and I've already hit the bay looking. I'm a club ho it's a curse but made me wonder what other clubs I've missed because they weren't on the beaten path.

In order of production: maxfli revolution black dot, cobra amp forged, Cleveland TT

Wilson Ultra 45 was their answer to the Ping Eye 2 and was a great iron, of course it didn't knock down the Eye 2 but it was very good looking at address and very forgiving.

The Ram Lazer FX series were probably some of the best forged cavity backs ever made for feel and performance (not the cast models)............I'd put them up against anything on the market today and some of Mizuno's stuff is certainly awesome.

Taylormades original Tour Preferred Tour Spoon and Raylor were awesome fairway woods and dominated in their day.........would still perform very well with modern shaft upgrades.

Callaways small headed s2h2 three woods were legendary for their performance.............tiny head and big distance, very popular on tour for a long time. If you've never hit one you won't believe how well that tiny head performs, much more forgiving than it looks.

Lot's more but these seldom get mentioned and are all great clubs.

Adams (pre TM ) MB 2's and CMB's.

Cobra SS Forged, Cobra Amp Forged, Cobra s2 forged, callaway FT

Ping S58. Not mentioned much these days now S55s are everyone's sweetheart.

Any set by Northwestern or Campbell that people started out with that got them hooked at a young age.

Maxfli Revolution and the Australian blades that were designed at the same time

Cally Razr X.... started the evolution of reducing the ever expanding sole widths on GI clubs back to a width that would allow better turf interaction for better players.

TM 300s.... such a nice forging, wish TM could bring that quality back

Founders Club Tour CB's

I think the ping s series in general the s58 s55 and such get tons of love, not that they don't deserve it they are a fantastic stick and the values held on great had an older set when they came out and sold them a few years back for a good price...what do you guys think about the pricing of newer clubs? 999.99 for a new set??? I don't think it's worth the money for companies that are re hatching older ideas there doesn't seem to be enough change between models for me to really pine for new top end irons most forged clubs play very similar along manufacturer lines IMHO

I agree with this. Adams forgings were extremely underrated. The MB2's, CB2's and 3's, and the CMB's were just great sticks. To top it off they all came stock with premium components at a non-premium price. Think about how many of the top OEM's are going to put C-Tapers and New Decades on a club without charging you through the nose for it.

I do love those Maxfli rev blacks! I have a set packed away in a box somewhere.

I know they're old but do you all think it would be safe to bend them a few degrees flat?

bending the revs is an iffy proposition. The hosel won't break. They are as soft as butter, but due to the multi-layer material design, the outer nickel/chrome skin will 'crinkle' or show stretch marks. I had a set and found that to be true. 1 or 2 degrees is okay, when you get more than that they show the stress on the outer skin

[/quote]I agree about the CMBs they are fantastic irons. I have a set I need to move. Now playing the Srixon Z545s and loving them. More forgiving for my swing.

The marketing was strong but I feel like the SLDR irons still went under the radar in some regards. I love mine. Will play them for a long time I think.

A set of clubs that won the Masters but seemed to get very little traction even though they were designed and performed for the majority of players gets my vote...Nike VR Split Cavities

Another vote for the Cobra SS Forged. Easy to hit and easy on the eyes. Isn't that exactly what an iron set is supposed to be?

Nickent 4DX Pro's

Current model, not old, Acer XV Pro irons. Heads are $9/each and super solid. Tons of banter about the new Pine i e1 irons having a soft feel and these things do too because they are made from the same 431 stainless. If people hit these things they would be amazed.
