Does your club have a member that "Clears the Sheet" ?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed an interesting phenomenon at my current club. There is a particular member that "clears the sheet". In other words, unless he's playing on a prime weekend morning, I noticed that the tee times immediately after him are ALWAYS open. Later came to find out that he is so notorious for slow play, that most members will not book a tee time for at least one to two hours after him.

Thankfully, he doesn't seem to play much at the times I like to play. I've heard of guys that no one wants to play with, but this is the first time I had seen a guy with a bad enough slow play rep that no one wants to play after him ...

I think I've told this story here before but at a local private club here there was a man who was horribly slow... his response "I pay my dues so I will play as fast or slow as I want." This went on for years. He retired and moved to Florida where he continued to have the same attitude. His very first week he got a letter,"Please pick up your pace of play... this will be your only warning." He kept his attitude... the next month he got a letter,"You were warned once, here's a check for your dues, please take your golf somewhere else."

The members up here were slapping themselves for not thinking of that.

That slow guy must of moved over to my club. We have one, and I mean one individual who makes everyone moan if they are going out behind him. He has that same attitude, "I am a member and I can play at my pace". My club does nothing about it even though we all complain. It's almost like the Seinfeld episode when Jerry says "Newman!" We all say this guys last name in the same tone that Jerry said it. We give him crap every time we come in too...."If you were any slower, you would be going backwards...." He doesn't seem to care that he held everyone up.

Too common an attitude these days of entitlement, I do this therefore I am entitled. His rights to play at "his" pace are fine until his pace of play impinges on the rights of the rest of the membership.

Some math wizard needs to figure out a Pace of Play Index. Slot players based on that. "Sorry Mr Tortoise, we only allow your index to play after 4 PM."

My club is afraid to piss anyone off. A bunch of marshmellows, Their comment is that the members should "police" each other. I wonder what they will say when there is a fight on the property.

Wonder what the club would do if a large number of dues paying members suddenly gave notice that they were leaving. And they cited slow play behind this guy as the reason. Letting them know that if they can choose - slow play Joe and a loss of members. Or accountability, only one unhappy member and lots of happy ones, and a faster pace of play.

If slower players would let faster groups through there shouldn't be much issue.

Ask Mr. Slow, what about the other many members that pay their dues? They all hold a vote, and their many votes outweigh his rights as a member who wants to do what ever he wants. Membership revoked.

"I pay my dues like everyone else and therefore I can....."

I'm consistently amazed that people with crap like this rattling around in their head manage to hold down jobs, own homes, raise children, survive into old age, etc. I can't figure it out.

Just find something he hates and employ his own logic against him. Or just taste of his own medicine....skip ahead of him and stand there on the green/fairway screwing around with your phone, chatting it up, etc. Do ANYTHING besides play golf. You can do what you want - you're a member. See how he holds up.

Trouble is this falls into the category of two wrongs don't make a......

At some point someone still has to do the right thing and fix the issue instead of just making it worse.

I am left asking why, when a majority of members are opposed to such inappropriate slow play, the club doesn't react just as the one here in Florida did. Now THAT is the right thing. If jackwagon got himself booted from enough clubs he might get a clue. Better yet if future clubs ask for references and it became known that he was booted and could not get approved for membership - problem solved.

We had a member like that at my club. The guy was given the option to pick up his pace, play late in the evening, or find another club to be at.

His attitude was always, "but there isn't anybody I'm holding up behind me" because nobody would play behind him similar to your story. He was told that pace was to be kept with the group in front of him, which he didn't like. He has since been told to go elsewhere from 2 other courses in the area last I heard.

I'm not sure whose worse, the ultra slow member or the super fast one who always asks to play through even if it's packed and there's no where to go.

The super fast player gets a polite "sorry but no" response from me if there is no where for him to go. Generally if there is no where to go, you can usually just point at the group ahead and ask him where does he think he can go.

Pretty much the same answer from me, however it bothers me that people would even ask to play through under those circumstances

Super slow is definitely worse than super fast.....

which leads me to another point about the wonders of country club golf. You can totally skip a hole or two to get around a group and circle back later with little to no trouble!!! Or you can just say screw it and skip them without feeling like you cost yourself money.

So, your point is that extremes exist at the extremes? Honestly, can anyone in good conscience claim that there is a bigger problem with fast play in golf than with slow play? And yet some turtles always show up to make the point that "too fast sucks too!"

Hit the ball already gentlemen. You guys probably posted this while "folded arms guy" was waiting in the fairway for you to get the heck off the green.

That only works when the course is fairly wide open. If Mr Slowpoke is playing at 9am on a Saturday with 20 groups behind him, he can't and won't let all 20 play through.

Just MOVE FASTER.

They do not allow that at my club.

In fact the marshall will talk to them, then the manager will come out.

If that happens you are either leaving or moving to the 150 markers for the rest of your round.

In Bobby Jones day they WALKED 5 somes in 2 1/2 hours - 4 1/2 hours is ridiculous and the other members just do not tolerate it.

This story is fake. No one is asking what time mr slow play has his tee time. And the course would certainly not put up with it if it were affecting members so much. Stop the bs posts please.
[/quote]

Are you wondering why you never have any groups scheduled behind you?

Yes we have, an older member, a physiscian, who always rides in a cart, which is very unusual around here. He still is a lot slower than anybody else in the club, including other seniors who walk.
He doesn't only clear the sheet behind him, but people also cancel their tee times, if he happens to reserve his as the fourth in the group. Not only is he slow, but he also uses a gas powered cart, and he always makes sure that he fires it up right on the top of somebody else's backswing. Also, he never knows, where he has hit his ball, so he rides to every ball in sight (even my yellow ones), leans out of the cart, picks up the ball and then tosses it away, when he realises it is not his. He also likes to use his cell-phone during his rounds and talks very loudly when he does so.
All in all, you could rightly call him the playing partner from hell. He is 76 already, so there is hope.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

We have a member that is a good player and manages to qualify for our Ryder Cup team just about every year for the past 20 years. He's missed a few but not many.

Every year that he qualifies our team Capt and our opposing team Capt put him out dead last in whatever format we're playing. This member thinks it's because he's clutch (which he kinda is)

The real reason is because of his pace of play. Last the year on the Sunday singles the matches were over and done -- we lost -- and his single match was on 14 tee when the rest of us were in the clubhouse drinking.

Giving credit where credit is due....this guy in mid 50s now and he won that match over a mid 20s former small college player.

He moves like pondwater....
