I'm a huge fan of William Langford. Some of his green complexes are the best I've ever seen.

My favourite designer is Tom Doak because his work is very original and his courses are fun to play. Stanley Thompson is another favourite if mine and I am fortunate to have played several of his courses living in Canada.

Both understood how to make a course difficult for all skill levels without making it long. They were geniuses at bunker placement and creating the proper size/shape green complex to fit the hole.

Was coming here to post the same thing, but if you're gonna say Langford you should probably also include his often-partner Moreau.

Donald Ross. Although the speed at which some Ross courses keep their greens at currently doesn't really jive with what they were designed for, leading to a lot of ridiculous putts.

Well the only 3 I've played are: Lancaster CC, Cascades (Homestead) and some place on Long Island called Shinnecock

Edit: actually just looked it up and he did CC of Harrisburg, Huntington Valley and several other Phily courses that I've played. All are good with Huntington Valley in particular being a real gem.

If you can find a course that is suitable to how long the ball flies, Donald Ross in a landslide. The problem is a lot of his courses have become obsolete since the ball travels so far these days. George C. Thomas has more designs that are still suited for the longer ball and I really like them. Modern day architect I would probably go with Ron Garl. If everything is equal in terms of resources for the club and making the most out of those resources, Garl's designs are top notch.

I have the most fun playing golf on Arthur Hills or Tom Fazio designs. But to be fair, I haven't had an opportunity to play on many of the highly touted (Tillinghast, Raynor, Ross). I can't say I really enjoyed the two Dye courses I've played. I've got a Coore/Crenshaw and a Ross course on the books for the coming weeks - very excited.

I don't know if I really have a favorite. I have favorite parts from most all of the famous designers. Overall, however, I would say for more traditional designs, I am big fan of Ross courses. For modern day designs, I love Doak courses. I like his somewhat edgy, yet still minimalist characteristics. Plus Pacific Dunes may be the best course in the country....

Modern - I like Jim Engh (one of his gems here: http://hawktree.com/) and Joel Goldstrand (http://www.blueberrypinesgolf.com/), which is probably biased because I live in the midwest and don't many opportunities to play courses by some of the greats.

I've also got a soft spot for Ellis Maples designed courses.

He's certainly not my favorite (RTJ probably is), but Joe Lee has always struck me as underappreciated. I've never played a Joe Lee course that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. Not the most challenging, but he knew how to make a golf hole scenic regardless of the terrain.

+1 for Stanley Thompson. Responsible for so many of Canada's finest classic course designs. I'm slightly biased as a Canadian, but I've travelled all over the world and have never seen more beautiful bunkering or designs that fit into the natural landscape so seemlessly. Visit St. George's, Capilano, Banff Springs, Jasper Park Lodge, Highland Links, and Westmount. You won't be disappointed.

Moreover, Thompson was a co-founder, with Donald Ross, of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, and helped train many top architects, including Robert Trent Jones. He truly left an undeniable mark on the game here in Canada and abroad.
