Question About Tees

Medic

Recommended Posts

I was in the golf shop sniffing around while they regripped my putter and went to the tee area. It was amazing just how many styles and types there are. Tall thin ones, "martini" design, 4 yards more, and on and on.

So I get back and start watching my Hi-Def coverage of the tourney and take note - the pros aren't using any of those odd designs. When they zoomed in on Rory, Jordan, and Phil all three were using regular tees. (long but regular)

This, to me, begs the question - if these tees are truly beneficial then why aren't the people whose livelihoods depend on good play using them? Or, perhaps a better question might be who (if anyone) on tour is using them?

This is the single tool that is used on almost every tee and it is, in some form, in each bag on tour. And yet no WITB ever shows what the pros prefer.

I didn't pull the trigger on any of the specialty designs. I did proceed with purchasing another bag of 100 of my white tees (easy to find) with blue lines in 3.25 - nice to always be able to tee the exact same height.

So what gives? Are those special designs longer or what????

No one with even half a brain believes a tee offers "performance".

But there are other valid reasons for tees choices:

Painted wood tees stripe the bottom of my clubs so that's a no.
Tees that break easily....no.
Tees that are too hard to break....no.
Easy or harder to find in the grass...personal choice.
Ease of penetrating hard ground...personal choice more or less.
Cost versus durability....personal choice.
etc, etc....

Having options is rarely a bad thing.

Thanks to the [s]idiot[/s] people on this site, and Amazon points that needed blown, I bought a pack of Martini tees in Shocking Pink.

I put it in play June 25, and haven't broken or lost it since. Couple that with the fact that I will pick up abandoned tees, I've had to clean out my tee pouch twice since June. Just yesterday, my tee count was +6 on 18.

So in theory, the Martini tee has made my tee coffee can even fuller. It hasn't saved me a nickle though, since I haven't bought a tee since the Reagan administration.

Does it make my drives go straighter and longer? Well, when I rope one, I tell my buddies it does.

Reading the prior post..the Martini Tee hits every point.

I gather by you being here along with me that your courses are also completely saturated. Sigh....

Anyway, about the only thing I look for in a tee is longer. Got in the habit when my oversized driver recommended teeing it high years ago. I don't mind the paint marks since they tell me exactly where I just made contact - and they wipe right off. I made a mistake a couple of years ago buying some slim tees. Even completely sober you could not get a ball to balance on those things.

What was amazing was one pack of 6 tees that were $7.95. They stated that they were used by top touring pros. Unbreakable and longer by design. If that's the case why wouldn't tour pros advertise them? (Sponsor money) Talk about a gimmick.

Before I started using the Martini tee, I averaged between 230 and 240 yards with the driver. I switched to the Martini tee last year, and not only did I find that a Martini tee lasts for a year or more if you don't lose it, I also found that I still average between 230 and 240 yards with the driver. The money I used to spend on wooden tees is now spent on liquor and women.

Bought 2 500 count bags earlier in the year. At 1.5¢ a piece it doesn't hurt my feelings to break one and I don't feel like I've got to look for my tees like I did with Zero Friction.

I think it depends on the club finish. I've had some that are a bear to get off and others not so much.

Careful about "reading" that mark though, they can be misleading.

Best of luck getting unsaturated. :)

I like the "plastique" tees, as we call them, because they are so durable. But I think that the guys I play with spend almost as much time looking for their tees after hitting than they do looking for their golf balls on errant shots. May have to institute a time limit..ha, ha. (Don't worry, we have a reputation for being very fast players.)

I use Zero Friction only because they last forever, Mainly the only way i need a different one is if i loose it.

I liked them for the durability but got tired of having to look for a tee after every drive.

I use the 4+ yards tees. Bought 12 of them a couple of years ago and still have 8 of them. Indestructible. No added distance but they set the ball up nice.

I have a buddy like that. He will spend forever looking for his "plastique" tee.

I like how durable those types of tees are but I have started using the pride pro length tees as I like how easy they make it to get a consistent tee height.

Get the martini tee and forget about tees. It is that great.

One tee. It lasts longer than any other tee. It's heavier so it doesn't fly as far away after being hit and it's easy to spot on the tee box because of the bright colors. Lastly, it's easy to find in your pocket.

I found one in May of 2014. I played it until it broke in November because it was incredibly cold. About 100 rounds. I put another in play the next day and have played it from November 2014 until now, August 2015. Well over 100+ rounds. It'll probably break once the cold weather, and I mean 30's, comes back this fall.

I can't imagine using another tee at this point. Every one of my friends have switched to the martini tee.
People spend far too much energy worrying about tees. Buy a pack of 500 in natural wood and don't think about it for a couple years.
Worrying? No. Wondering about different types and performance? Yes.

But I agree that usually the most simple solution is the best one.

See, based on this I looked them up on their site. As stated earlier, I bought a huge pack of wood a few years ago and haven't run out, but I was intrigued. They lost me though when they started talking about more distance as just another gimmick. Is it safe to say your recommendation is based solely on the fact they're study?

Why do private courses and high-end publics have tees out for free when the clientele can afford to buy them while guys who play at munis have to buy their own tees? Never understood that!!
I assume it's just the perks of being able to afford fancy places. Just like when rich women go shopping for brides dresses as high end places they get free champagne.
