The Byron Nelson "Open Champion" model was to honor Nelsons 1939 US Open win at Spring Mill CC outside Philadelphia, beating Craig Wood in a playoff.

Most people remember the 1939 US Open as where Sam Snead made an 8 on the 72nd hole, when a 5 would have won.

This was one of the "Open Champion" models MacGregor offered. Note the position of the "M" cloverleaf below the name, and the "Sweepback" soleplate.

VIP Irons

MacGregor marketed these irons as having [b]Split/Level [/b]soles. Even used a photo of Tom Weiskopf for marketing this model. They also made "VIP" irons with regular soles.

The 1 indicates a Stiff shaft, and a "10" iron (PW) was usually included with the set.

When I visited Scratch Golf and spoke with Don White in October 2012, he informed me the VIP [b]Split/Level [/b]irons were some of the first ones he worked on when hired by MacGregor in 1971.

Don has recently retired.

That's a nice looking original condition older persimmon wood...and 75 years old. How's the shaft and grip? What's the face look like?

I am using a split-sole two iron at the moment. Always makes me giggle thinking that this was marketed as a game-improvement club! Nowadays it looks more like some cruel training aid...

Thanks for the info on my recent acquisitions. I stopped by a play it again sports on my way to the range and acquired the 3 and 4 wood to go with my Mac/Louisville M85w.

The irons are wonderful! Super solid feeling, and just supremely well crafted. The Tourney Taper shafts are some serious pieces of hardware. I'm actually going to extend them an inch since i'm 6'4" and have them regripped from the leather that's on them and see if I can game them. They feel much stiffer than the PX 7.0s in my Apex '99s. The 3 and 4 woods, which I will provide pictures later, are cannons. I didn't hit the Byron Nelson, i'll post some pics of the face later today. The grip is very long and thin, the shaft is strange. About halfway up theres a reverse step and then 3 inches from there an upstep of about 3 inches, then a downstep for 3 more, then slight taper up to the grip. Swinging it feels nice and well balanced. I can honestly say I have the "bug" for these classics! Now to find an LFF in a thrift store or Goodwill!
