Traveling from Birmingham to Athens, GA for a football game in two weeks. Looking for a good course to play the Friday before the game. As of right now Reynolds Plantation is #1. Is that my best option and if so which course?

Is Cuscowilla private?

Play the UGA course. You won't be disappointed.

Thought about the UGA course were Bama fans not that it should matter. Only thing I was worried about was that it would be slammed that day before the game.

Cuscowilla is only open to public play on Tuesdays if I remember correctly. I would say play the UGA course, Chateau Elan or Callaway Gardens.

Your pro should be able to get you on Cusco. I think it is accessible to the public all the time if you stay there.

You might like Traditions of Brazelton in Jefferson or Reunion in Hoschton, GA. They are both about 45 minutes for Athens, right off I-85 as you drive there. Chateau Elan is in the same vicinity too. Traditions is part of Club Corp and the others are available on GolfNow.com.

Decided to do that stay and play at Cuscowilla, and then find somewhere to play that afternoon. There is a tournament at UGA, anyone played Lane Creek?

Played Lane Creek a ton in college. played in a tourney there 2 years ago. according to a friend, it is still in great shape. always loved the layout. it's in the middle of nowhere. Cheap too.

I would suggest that you play The Georgia Club, it's 12 miles west of Athens on HWY 316. It's a 27 hole Denis Griffiths design and probably has the best bent grass greens around. The UGA course is nice, but long and almost all approach shots are into elevated greens. Nothing wrong with Lane Creek, but it's nothing fancy. A little stale to me. If you are staying at [color=#282828]Cuscowilla, I would play another course close by. Harbor Club or one of the Reynolds courses.[/color]

Lane Creek has some good holes, the routing is somewhat disjointed. Good value. If you are doing another course near Cuscowilla, I would recommend Harbor Club. As good as the Reynolds courses for less coin.

You will love staying at Cuscowilla. Beautiful community and awesome course. Avoid the bunkers like the plague....they are true hazards and filled with a thick clay sand. As mentioned above, I think Harbor Club now does public play. That would be a great 36 holes. If you have time for breakfast, the clubhouse kitchen at Cuscowilla makes a killer bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit.

I Love Lamp and Lane Creek. It's not Cusco by any stretch but it's a good golf course, laid back atmosphere, and shouldn't be crowded.

I'm actually surprised at all of the comments and only one person recommended The Georgia Club. Other than the RP courses and Cuscowillla, none of the other courses compare to The Georgia Club as a great second option to Cuscowilla in my opinion. You won't be disappointed in the course and the food in the clubhouse afterwards. And don't worry, us UGA folks don't have a problem with the Tide. We really don't like UT and UF folks. UA doesn't play us enough to hate you. LOL!

Cateechee and Arrowhead Pointe may be worth look as well.

Who knew there were so many fellow Athenians. Haha. Dont know how everyone here feels about it but I like the Chimneys I'm Winder. Pretty good value
