I am using a Cleveland 588 RTX 50*, I have played Cleveland wedges for almost the entire time I have been playing golf (1993), as of now my entire wedge set is 588RTX (46, 50, 54 and 58 degree)...seem to give me better results...

Currently using a glide 50 as opposed to the set ap2 gw. Initial reason, they didn't have the ap2 gw in stock at Edwin watts. I'm happy with the glide...matches my other wedges so I'm comfortable with bump and runs and has the full shot capability I need, similar to a set wedge. I've had vokeys, never loved them for full shots. I've had set wedges in the i25's...like them for full shots, not so much for around the green. I think it's personal preference and what you use the wedges for.

I prefer a GW that flights as low as possible. I don't chip with my GW, full shots and the occasional long bunker shot only. Currently using a MD2 Tour that's great, also loved my previous Vokey and RTX.

I always wonder about playing the GW from a set over the Vokey I use. The Srixon z545 doesn't offer a GW.

What are you using and why?

It's preference really. Same loft, just which you like better. Matching gap to the set some would say promotes more confidence and consistency with the set. Others say they like the feel of forged or custom wedges on shorter shots. Try both :-)

Personally I prefer a gap wedge from a set. I am still mainly playing a MX 200 gap wedge even though it is well past it best, so to speak. The gap wedge is mainly a full swing / 3/4 swing club, I find I get more consistent carry distances from this more forgiving type of gap wedge.

I have a Vokey SM 5 50 (std DG wedge flex) carry distance is 5 yards short of the MX 200 (Dynalite Gold XP R300) and there is much less room for error in terms of strike accuracy. The Vokey offers more versatility close in but I have room in the bag for a 54 and 58 so they cover this need. The MX 200 is perfectly good for stock chip shots.

Crazy as it sounds how about the Z 355 gap wedge for your set.

I use the gap wedge that comes with my set (G30 UW). Reason is that I use it for full swings and 3/4 swings and I prefer that it feels the same as my PW. I use Cleveland wedges in 56 deg and sometimes a 60, depending on space in my bag. For these, almost always 1/2 swings and below.

I like wedges that match my irons, at least down to the really high lofted wedges, like 58+. I like the consistency of looking down at the same club face.

I hit my z 545 PW about 105-110. It's 44 degrees.

I hit my Vokey 50 gap about 90 yards.

And then on a full-ish swing hit my 56 Vokey SW about 75 yards.

I rarely use my Vokey 60.

I wouldn't mind tightening those up. I think when the SM6's release I'm going to transition to a 48 gap, then a 52 and then 56.

I do wish that Srixon made the GW. I could bend it to 48 and just get the two Vokey wedges.

I saw the link above, but it's not the shaft that matches my set.

Touchy feely shots are tough for me with set GW's. Plus they tend to be chunky. They just lack the versatility, in my opinion. Plus there's the issues of non-ideal grinds, bounce, weight, etc.. I also like to flight the ball down with my wedges, and have struggled to do that with the set GW's I've tried (even when throwing X100's in them).

If you are someone that struggles to find the sweet spot regularly though, and you really only use your GW on full swings, I'd strongly consider it. They may hide your misses a bit better.

Those aren't horrible gaps DLO^.

Have you considered just adjusting the Vokeys you have?

Especially if your 60* rarely comes out of the bag.. You can bend it to 58* or so and use it for chipping.
I guess I think they should be about 10 yards max.

If I hit that Gap abput 95, and a 52 85 and my SW 75 the gaps would be really tight inside 100. Right now I have to do 1/2 swings or choke down often.

The only time I use the 60 is if I'm in a bunker, very close to the pin.

I hear you. The wedge game for me, personally, is a very large part of scoring well. We can all bomb and gouge. Its the touch, around and on the green, that puts a decent score together. Again, that's for me.

If I don't trust 1/2 shots and less, that puts pressure on the irons shots, which puts pressure on the tee shots... and then the wheels can come off and then I just order more beer and then I go "pro" and try to shape everything... lol.

It's golf. Confidence is key, IMO.

Haha, awesome post.

I would love to keep half and choked down, finesse pitch shots to 75 yards and less. Over that I think I benefit from taking a full swing if I can. Which with a wedge is less than an actual full swing. But for the sake of this conversation...

Off topic some, but:

I just reread through some of your posts. You have a 50*, 52* and 56*, making three wedge set outside of your Z545's?

Which makes sense now that I looked up the lofts of your irons. I see the stock loft of your PW is 44*, and then Gap is 50*.

Nice work. A lot of guys wouldn't really pay attention to that. You might get a larger gap in yardage between them than the other clubs or wedges, but no biggie. Bend one or both to close the yardage on shots you see often.

However, I also saw your shafts in the bulk of your clubs are regular, and your wedges probably have Wedge flex in them. I'd guess they are a bit stiffer than the rest of your bag. Maybe not. But, just to be sure, it might be something to look into, just so you stay balanced through the set.

And, Newport 2.6 is my next purchase.. Looking for one that's beat up that I can mess with and not throw away $300..lol

I used to buy an indivisual gap wedge.
But, I ditched it out of my bag.

I realized I can hit all shots with my picthing wedge.
So, I put extra hybrid.

I use a 52 degree Vokey as opposed to an AP2 W which is fine. It's probably because we are pre-conditioned to look at it like this but I prefer the look of that in my bag.

I don't know if anyone is the same but the only issue that I have is the difference between my PW and the 52 wedge. The difference between the PW and the 52 is more than loft. The ball speed from my AP2's just seem to be so much greater than the speed off the face of the 52. I was measured at the beginning of the summer and my PW was carrying 136 but my 52 was only going 115, far too big a gap. I mean 21 yards off difference for 5 degrees of loft. Anyone else have something similar?

Next time around I will be going for a 50 degree gap wedge.

Used to play actual wedges from 46* down (46/50/54/58) because I thought it looked cool in the bag. I've since moved on and play both set PW and GW from my iron set. I had a mini shootout with the set wedge, an Edel and Vokey, and the set wedge was just a bit better than the other two in terms of consistency and forgiveness. I pretty well never chip with my GW and it is reserved for 1/2,3/4 to full swings only and I was able to control the ball reasonably well and seemed to get me closer. Having then gamed it for half a season (when I picked up the irons), I love it and wouldn't change.

I also play the W and U from my i20 set, for the main reason that they are just more forgiving on full shots and don't sacrifice anything else. I chip just fine with the i20 U - in fact I like it better around the greens than my old Vokey 52. The U (50) also gaps my set better than my old 52.

I've done both. I played for 2 years with the GW from my iron set and loved it. The problem was I loved it so much that it got beat to hell. I replaced it with a Mizuno MP-T5 50* wedge and love that as well. It's more versatile than the AMP Forged GW for me but it goes a little shorter.

I'm also experiencing a bit more of a gap than I wish, going from my 44 degree PW from my set to the 50 degree Vokey GW. This is why I am thinking that once the SM6's come out to switch to a 48 degree gap, then 52 and 56 and not carry a 60 anymore as I very rarely use it anyways.

That's where I ordered mine too. The GW from the set gives me more confidence from 200 yards in.
