The perfect locker room

Damo75

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what different clubs offer in the way of locker rooms for members out there? It would be great to see some photos if anyone would like to share theirs.

Also, what makes a great locker room in your opinion? What are the "must have's", what are "desirable" features and what are definite no-no's?

A TV and a few game tables are nice. Comfortable chairs. Small bar is a big win.

I've been fortunate enough to see some really nice locker rooms. The best I've seen by far is at Sherwood CC. The Men's Locker Room is bigger than most clubhouses and has direct access to the parking lot, a huge locker area (lots of mahogany/dark wood, shoe clean/shine place where you can just drop them off after your round and they'll have them ready for you when you leave, full bar, you can order food, big glass doors on the course side so you can see the course and which also provide access the veranda ...it's truly next level sh@t. Breakfast burritos are ridiculous.

No danger of that at my club. The women's locker room has been fully refurbished while the men's hasn't been touched since the 70's.

That's one of the reasons I'm asking, to try and get a few ideas.

I probably should clarify a few things too.

When I say locker room I mean strictly a room with lockers, showers and other facilities as opposed to the entire clubhouse.

We have a refurbished clubhouse with bar, kitchen, verandas overlooking the course etc. but the locker room needs some serious work done.

The best locker room I have ever been in is at Gleneagles. It was just perfect. The best shower I have ever been in in my life, a sauna, pretty sure there was also a steam room (I never made it quite as far as where I think that was because there were a bunch of old naked dudes and that was not something I wanted to walk into the middle of). The lockers themselves were amazing and the day that I played we were the second or third match out which meant when I first got in, I was able to through my gear into the Adam Scott locker which as my favourite golfer was an added bonus.

The other awesome locker room worthy of mention is at Castle Stuart. TV's with Sky Sports on a loop and views out over the course and the Moray Firth that are just incredible.

Not quite sure I like the sound of some of the extras that are mentioned by some people above. They all sound like pretty neat things to have in a clubhouse but in the locker room itself? Not so much.

A women's locker room that isn't an afterthought.

You should check out my club! The women's locker room is better than the mens. Exactly the same size but there are less lockers. The benefit of that is that they are able to do some stuff with the space. The walls are nicely decorated, they are comfortable seats, it seems like just a nicer place to be in than across the hall.

We are missing 3 things in ours: bar, card tables and tv's

Though I'd prefer to drink and watch TV with my pals in the bar area.

We do have 400 wooden lockers with a shoe drawer ... a steam room, a water jet monster shower (1), sauna, and jacuzzi.

Used to also have a pool table room but the restaurant took that back to expand seating and moving the door from our locker room into the resto

Ours could be better but it was likely the bees knees when it opened 25 years ago

There's a local club in Toronto with nap rooms off the locker room ! Older membership

We've got 200 or so lockers, nice shower and restroom area with full toiletries, shoe shine, full service bar, card tables, three 55" TVs, buffet, and about 60 feet of 10 ft tall windows across the back looking out onto the number 1 tee box. I'd love to have a steam room or a sauna, but we don't have too much room for expansion.

I think lots of us have locker rooms that include 'sitting areas'. Some very extravagant. I actually really like this as it a more casual place to have drink, watch tv and play cards than in the main area of the clubhouse.

Full bar/restaurant

Your locker room has a bar/restaurant in there? Surely at that point the moniker locker room is becoming a bit of a stretch. I'm not meaning to sound rude or anything like that and it is possibly is a difference in culture between the UK and US but a locker room here would never be somewhere where you would ever consider serving food and drink.

Many locker rooms at private clubs here in the US have bars/ restaurants in them. "Locker rooms" at private clubs are not only places where you can change clothes and shower, but are also places where men (or women) are encouraged to spend time hanging out with other members in a very casual/relaxed atmosphere compared to the rest of the clubhouse. To encourage this many clubs will install pool tables, card tables, big screens, comfy seating, and yes even bars/restaurants that are only accessible in the locker room. The locker room is typically a huge area of the clubhouse that is separated into many sections, but is accessible only by the men (or women) of the club.

This sums it up, basically the Mens Lounge or Womens Lounge is built into the locker room area.

I like an open floor plan. Why? Keeps the surprises to a minimum. Nothing worse than coming around the corner to your (tiny) locker and seeing Joe Lunchpail dancing naked in front of his locker. Noooooo thank you.

Also, appropriately sized lockers. They should be tall enough to hang a pair of slacks, wide enough to put 2-3 entire outfits in there. A shelf to store several dozen balls, and shelves at the bottom for several pairs of shoes.

If you're going to put a "bench" in there, put one for each locker/row of lockers. If the guy in the locker immediately behind me is sitting down, I'm either standing, or sitting "offset" from my locker. That's dumb.

Clean showers, clean towels, I like a nice hot tub and a steam room, some nice shaving and oral hygiene products, and someone to shine up the shoes.

Let's not forget someone to call it Gof...without the "L".
