New 2016 Callaway Chrome Soft

Recommended Posts

I was recently given several boxes of the "new and improved" chrome soft. The new 2016 model is supposed to be released sometime next month. After testing them for less than five minutes, I could clearly tell that the ball was different. I immediately read the box and I was shocked to see that the new ball is a 4 piece. Personally I wasn't impressed. Why would Callaway change a ball that is so popular? The feel was night and day. The original chrome soft had such a smooth feel whereas this new one feels heavier off the face. The whole purpose was to create "the ball that changed the ball." This new model is no longer anything special, and it feels like every other ball on the market again. Does anyone else know if callaway is planning to have both models or is this a pure replacement? If not, i feel like they are making a huge mistake and will really disappoint many of their customers who have gotten used to the balata like feel of the original 3 piece ball.

I've been able to test the new ball as well and I'd have to completely disagree with you. I feel like they actually refined the feel and the 2016 Chrome Soft fits my game much better. To me it feels like I'm transferring more energy with my drives, like I get that "pop", but at the same time I'm getting excellent feedback from it around the greens. It's checking up when I want and rolling out when I want. I guess I'd just say I feel like the new ball is more controllable.

I hope they didn't mess them up. Great ball that does everything.

I love the original CS, I heard they were coming out with a firmer CS, I hope is not too firm, I guess I can play any ball but the CS really fits my game, mind you my SS is 108-112, long off the tee, one hop with about 8-10" release with the longer irons, one hop stop with the shorter irons, backspinning just enough with the scoring clubs and like butter off the putter...I can't wait to try the new ones to see the difference...

theres a good thread on this in the "ball" forumn..... I have tested and am paying the new chrome soft...and personally I love it... I think they improved it just enough... Its very very soft ball...btu has enough compression now that harder swingers can play it without loosing distance off the tee.... I find it longer than prov 1 with an iron and same with driver.... and it rolls off the putter better than any ball ive ever played... I think its a great ball myself... but I do think that callaway could produce both versions to suit all speed players

I am sorry you feel that way, but if you don't like them, you can send me a box, I will test them and give my opinion on them (I can pay you for shipping)...lol

Count me in the nervous camp. I love the original Soft, because even though it cost me a couple of yards on drives, the performance with my irons is so much better (in terms of both distance and spin) that I found a large net gain in distance. I'll gladly lose 5 yards off the driver to be able to hit a full club less on approaches and still get good spin/stopping power.

I will definitely be trying the new version out, but it seems like every time I find a ball that performs markedly better for me, the manufacturer makes a tweak and it no longer fits me so well. I have had this happen with balls from Bridgestone, Nike, Srixon, and Titleist, so it's not specific to any particular ball company.

I put it down to being a tweener in terms of swing speed, and ball makers trying to optimize to the middle of swing speed distributions for faster and slower swingers.

I really think those of you who love the old ball for the irons and short game will love this one. You will likely gain a few driver yards back and enjoy all the same benefits of the old ball with short game. I'm a pro v1 user and I can tell you the new chrome soft is worlds softer and better off a wedge or putter. But it isn't mushy off the driver like the old ball was to me.

I also like the original 3 piece. I guess I'll have to pick up a few more boxes of them when they get discontinued and discounted. If the new ones are even better then it's a win-win.

Seems like their just rebranding one of their other premium balls with the Chrome Soft name due to its popularity. If it's only $2 more a dozen than the 2015 CS I guess it won't hurt to try but I really love 2015 model. Hope they keep producing both though.

I'm new to Callaway balls ij General. But I thought the chrome soft was their premium ball ? Is there another out there ? Or do you mean a ball used on tour ?

Ill buy what you dont want or give you some pro v1s or x NIB etc. Really want to test them alongside the new Nike Platinums I like, sound similar.

Per Zaks article the new ball has 75 compression from the prior mid 50s? I for one like that as I loved the iron performance...but not so much the greenside, so 4piece will help that and bring it to use for higher speed players. I also agree they need a 50s comp 3piece and a 70s comp 4 piece kind of like thier x of soft, perfect market coverage.

I think most Callaway tour pros have been using one of the speed regime balls.

Believe the 2015 CS was 65 compression.

Are they keeping the Truvis in the Chrome Soft line? Didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the post.

Superhot is a completely different ball, it is geared towards distance performance...the CS is more a tour caliber golf ball (spin, feel, performance, etc)...

75 compression is still way softer than most "tour" balls. I tested them a couple months ago. I like the slightly firmer feel off the driver. The good news is that if you like the old model I'm sure you can stock up at a lower price for 2016!

ive had a chance to hit the new ball. Feels almost the same off the driver, maybe a little bit "heavier" but where i saw the most improvment was in the short irons. I am a lot more consistant and get much more control spin-wise which i didnt get from the original. still feels the same to me off the putter which was essential.

imma V1x guy, and transitioned to the CS last year near the end of the season

I liked it a lot

very straight for me, but I found it could get "hot" in the mid irons and i was flying greens every now and then

green side spin could be improved as well

looks like the new ball could be a winner and I'm pumped to give it a go

I was a big fan of last year's chrome soft. I love the "balata-like feel" with the modern benefits (cover durability, spin, etc.). My only issue was that it felt just alittle too soft off the driver and I lost about 5 yards off the driver. I also gained 5 yards on the irons. I got a sleeve of these new 2016 chrome soft balls and think that they are going to fit me alittle better, as they seem to address my main concerns with the 2015 model listed above. They feel just right off the driver (again this is a subjective thing) and the distance off the tee is similar to the ProV1x. I would say that this ball performs similarly to the ProV1x for me with better (softer) feel. It is going to be my ball for 2016, but obviously that could change at the drop of a hat.
