Should i dabble in club making?

Is it worth it?
Hi,

First post in the clubmakers forum but have been reading for a while.

Im considering doing a bit of re-shafting in my woods. NOTE I have no previous club making experience.

Im thinking about buying one of the JB Jr. Hydrolic Shaft extractors as it seems the easiest to use in order to successfully pull shafts. Is it true that it is the pulling of the shaft is the most difficult part? Also, i will be reshafting a titleist driver. So will the JB Jr work for a bore thru?

So my first question is:- The JB Jr including postage and customs to the UK is going to cost me £125-£150 and i am only really going to need to re-shaft three clubs in the foreseeable future. Is it worth me buying the puller with obviously no experience just to re-shaft three clubs or should I just send them to a pro?I have had a quote for £90 to re-shaft my titleist driver.

I have a bag full on beginners clubs with graphite shafts that I should be able to practise on first if I do go down the club making route.

Are you trying to pull 3 graphite shafts?
Have someone who knows how to do it and have the euipment to do it for you.
You'll never recoup your cost on the equipment, unless you do it by larger volume.
Think of it this way; you should get the quipment only if you like to tinker with golf equipment and have the time and the funds for your habit.
It's fun, but don't expect to make money or break even anytime soon.

once you start, you won't only do three. titleists are tough because they have an aluminum coupling in the hosel, and are actually meant to be pulled with something called a hot rod that goes down the butt of the club (insert punchline here). this keeps the heat off the hosel. it isn't a good idea to start with this club, i've got to say. i would be tempted to sell it as is and then put that money toward another club, and this from a guy who has pulled and reshafted approx. 1000 clubs. still, screwing up the odd one is part of the fun....

The bag:

Titleist 915 D2 driver

Titleist TS2 3 wood

Titleist 818 H1 3 & 4 hybrids

Mizuno MP-60 irons (5-PW)

Mizuno T-22 wedges

Odyssey Stroke Lab 2-ball

i've done about a dozen or more 905T and 905R and never had a problem with one. But I guess you always have the occasional one that doesn't go as planned. As far as extractors, we just use a Mitchell Pro Plus model puller, it isnt hydraulic, but it works perfectly fine for the last couple years. As long as you heat it up enough it doesn't take much to pull a head off.

IMO, to buy extracter is worthy. Even though I can not tell you in detail why you have to buy this tool, you will be satisfied with this extracter after pulling more than 3 shaft from driver. You can feel "I save a money!!". One more thing, do not trust golf shop staff about club making. I got screwed up my driver twice by those guy with paying $70. So, I won't go golf shop to do club-making any more. I bet you will be a good club maker if you stay GOLFWRX website at least 1 week.

Well it seems there is a mixed response whether or not to try re-shafting my own clubs.

One of the reasons that I am considering getting into it is because there are no club makers in my local area, only the local pro's at the proshop, so for me to get a club re-shafted would mean sending it away with no real face to face contact will the club fitter.

Obviously I would not start with the Titleist head as my first proper full. I am thinking about doing it on a V-steel. This has the standard stock shaft - which I hear is inexpensive - so to lose it would be no biggy.

I dont tend to break even or make profit with my club making, but I dont want to be hugely out of pocket if I do decide to go down the club making route. Also, I wont be spending mega bucks on exotic shafts, just something the likes of V2s and prolaunch blues.

Will I gain enjoyment out of this or is it or should i stay away?

Changing shafts if you have the appropriate eqpt. (like a JBs) is not that hard. I never ruined a shaft even when I was just starting. It's possible, but just be careful and read some professional instruction beforehand.

I doubt you'll ever make money on it. To do it for a living would be very tough and require a LOT of training. There is more to doing it as a business than as a hobbyist.

OK guys, I think Im gonna try re-shafting my woods. Just waiting on some info regarding a shaft puller.

I have one question though. I've a make a complete ar*e of pulling the shaft with a puller, is that going to ruin the head in any way? This goes for both bore thru and non bore thru.

Also, can some one post some links that would walk me through the entire re-shafting process?

I do it for fun and as a hobby. I have tried shaft/head combos that go against conventional wisdom and have been fantastic! Of course, I have made some that I thought would be perfect for my swing and were horrible. By far, the biggest benefit is that it has taught me alot about my swing, and my game in general.

I read alot and try to absorb as much info as possible and then experiment. Putters and drivers have been my main experimentation. My next project is to balance and spine align my back-up irons - Callaway X-Tours. They were never consistant for me, and I'm sure the shafts have never been aligned. I bought them after using a friend's set for a few rounds. His had been balanced and aligned and I loved the feel. Time is my biggest problem.

Pretty much the worst that can happen is you screw up a few shafts. If you can't afford that, you probably should have a different hobby than playing golf. You can always pay a good clubmaker to put things right for you.

Also a benefit for me has been learning what works best for my game. I could now go to a clubmaker and have him build clubs to my specs, rather than experimenting with a launch monitor and hope I had my normal swing that day.

The drawback is that I can't buy something off the rack without wanting to tear it apart and fix the darn thing.

I have also learned that I would rather play crappy heads with properly aligned, good shafts, than to play gorgeous clubs with the shafts just thrown on haphazardly. Of course, gorgeous heads properly built is even better!

Experiment, learn as much as you can by reading from here and elswhere, and have fun with it.

you won't ruin the head at all. if you use even a cheapo shaft puller you should be able to save the existing shaft. very low heat and high torque is the best way to go. if it won't budge, a bit more heat and more torque. you won't hurt the head.

buy a spining tool as well, if you don't have one. get the shaft out of the v-steel, spine it properly, and reinstall it. some guys will disagree with me i think, but it is a completely different shaft spined and unspined. if it still doesn't work, then pull it again and buy a shaft.

if you have any questions as you go, post them.
