Spine questions

Finding spine on gripped clubs
I got my JB Spine tool and tested two new shafts with it. All I can say is I am now a believer.

I would like to pull my Nippon shafts out, Spine them and put them back just to see what happens before replacing them all with DG shafts (what can I say I like to experiment). I tried the one that I pulled out of the 5 iron by sliding it up through the tool leaving the ferrel and grip on. The spine wasn't as easy to find as on the new shafts but I did find it. So is this an OK way to find the spines on shafts wihtout having to pull and replace the grips? Is there any reason I can't do this?

I would really like to try spining these shafts but don't want to replace the grips just for an experiment.

you should be able to get it with the grip on, but i did an experiment about a month ago. spined a few with the grip on, marked them, ripped the grip off, rechecked. the spines had been right about 75 per cent of the time. i have no idea why this would be the case.

don't spine a graphite shaft with JBs tool unless the grip is off. two inches of the club can be outside the tool, no more.

thanks guys

I have pulled a couple of the shafts to try something so may give them a shot and see how they come out. I am using the JB tool so may just strip off the grips to start with.

If I strip the grips I assume that it won't matter if the tip weights are in..... or will it?

A buddy of mine hit my two spined clubs today and we are doing his next. I didn't tell him what I had done until after he asked what I had changes since the last time he hit the four iron. He thought I had changed the shaft again. He couldn't believe I had just spinned it. I may not tell anyone else untill I take their money :cheesy:

hey hackin: tip weights won't affect anything in the process. a shaft that has been spined is a 100 per cent new shaft. a buddy of mine gave me a set of nippon shafts that were way too soft for him (he thought they were playing to a senior flex). i spined and dowelled them and dropped them into a set of my irons and let him hit one. he thought i must have bought a set of shafts and was fooling around with him. he wants the shafts back, but too bad.

if you leave the tip weights in, you might have to redrill the air hole, which might now be filled with old epoxy. if you don't, you might have the head not want to go on because the pressure is too great in the hosel. get the thinnest bit you can find; it is easy as pie to do. remember to shake the debris out of the butt end really thoroughly before gripping, or it will sound like a kid's toy in there.

cheers,
rob

That is what I am going to do. The set of 506 irons that I bought has Nippon 850 (?) shafts in them. They feel ok but seem too soft for me and the ball flight just isn't what I want. I am sure that I will change to the DG R shafts but before I do I want to try spining them. Just one of those "curiosity" moments that drives my wife nuts :cheesy:

I'm glad that you said something about the air hole. I wouldn't have done that. Do you happen to know what size dowels work in the taper tip shafts? I am at my brothers house and can pick some up without having to drive 30 miles like I do at home. They are hardwood dowels correct? Same size air hole in them?

the dowels need to be 5/16th, 1.5 inches long. hardwood for sure is best. something fluted on the sides would be good, because it holds the epoxy.

i meant to reply to that airhole stuff as well: i have done about 8 sets now and i have never once had a dowel build up the pressure and keep a head from going on. i thought it would, but it never has. it didn't do this even when i had done the dowels a week before doing the shafting. if you are concerned about that, or if you try one and it builds the pressure, don't drill a hole in the dowel, but rather put the head on first and then install the dowel from the butt end with a very thin ramrod. i have done this a bunch of times when i wasn't taking shafts on and it works great as well.

cheers,

Thanks witt

I will take something and punch it from the butt end. I have just about decided to try finding the spine with the grip on and re-glue them. I really don't want to cut grips off shafts and re-grip them for a few rounds. I am going to get new shafts but am doing this for the fun of it and to learn a little more about the effects of the spine on shafts.
